Two and a half years in jail for 'shouting at the police', no violence involved either from the sixty one year old grandad.

Frightening the way things are going. IMO.

eta. Became a life sentence.

He wasn't arrested for hurty words. He was actively involved in disorder. He was arrested for Violent Disorder under the Public Order legislation which has been in place since 1986. He placed a guilty plea and was sentenced using the sentence guidelines (which are very clear) which have been in place since 2020.

And that plea will have been made in full knowledge of what the punishment was likely to be (well assuming he had legal representation). When you see those pictures again anyone involved in that baying mob deserves everything they got. Utterly sub human way to behave.

Far right win today's Austrian general election:

26% to 27%     51 seats     Conservatives (OVP)
20% to 21%     40 seats     Labour (SPD)
                    9%     17 seats     Liberals (NEOS)
      8% to 9%     17 seats     Greens

                    2%        0 seats     Communists

Austria's conservatives to form government after far right is shunned - BBC News

Austria's president has dispensed convention and passed over Far Right, to initially ask Conservatives + Labour to enter coalition. It would require Liberals or Greens too, for working majority.

Two Sundays the local elections in Belgium were held, in these elections for the first time the Neo-Nazi Vlaams Belang won an absolute majority control of a city (Ninove - had never heard of it). However here there is still an agreement between all the parties in Belgium to not work at any level with Vlaams Belang which means they never actually had have ever had any power anywhere.

In another district called Ranst two local parties for the first time ever agreed to a coalition involving Vlaams Belang - the parties involved were linked to the liberals (Open VLD) and Christian democrats (CD&V) however the main parties expelled all members involved. The fear is that in other places parties start to cooperate with the nazis and gradually it becomes normalises - hopefully this is the only example.

Thankfully otherwise in most districts Vlaams Belang massively underperformed considering before hand they were confident of becoming the largest party in three mid sized cities - in the end they were only the largest party in two fairly irrelevant towns.
