Another terrific game. This has been an excellent World Cup.

I'm not sure about that.

This game has been the first real, high quality, physical game of the tournament.

It has been and the less VAR has been used the better the games.

FIFA turned the tournament into a farce by enforcing the insanity of VAR on top of hopelessly pathetic and out of their depth referees.

I don't think the fact that suddenly common sense has won out at the quarter final stage, and the fact that the bigger teams are not being handicapped by amateur officials from places like Ethiopia and North Korea, is enough to say that somehow it's been a wonderful tournament.

Have the rules been changed mid tournament?

The laws have been adjusted.

Now that all the shite and wee countries have been eliminated, FIFA are demanding that common sense prevails.

A few dislikeable, classless characters in that US team. Hoping England beat them in the semi, before losing to a dodgy, last-minute penalty in the final.

Good news about team GB England qualifying for the Olympics.

Megan Rapinoe is about the best thing about that team. I’m rooting for her, but most of her teammates are pretty classless.

I have no idea. I have a hard time believing that hand ball decision wouldn’t have required VAR consultation had it been the first game of the tournament.

VAR not being used relies on the referee getting the big decisions right, tonight's refereeing team did that so no need to intervene. Though it could just as easily been used to make it 3-0 to the USA with that offside goal if the player was half a foot further back.

This game and the England one last night were played in the right manner and they didn't have too many big decisions to make.

The penalty claim for handball was a prime example of ball to hand. Arm by her side and slightly behind, ball kicked straight at it, correct decision for no penalty.

Agreed, but not by the current rules, and not going by recent decisions in the World Cup and the Champions League.

Has FIFA actually reeled in the use of VAR, or is it an unstated change?

The tournament has been an success in spite of VAR, the knockout games have been great, the group stage games in any world cup are always a bit underwhelming due to the different levels of the teams.

Don't think there's been a handball penalty given where arms have been close to the body like in today's game though?

It depends on your definition of a 'success'.

The early games were either a walkover for the bigger teams or decided/ruined by poor refereeing and/or VAR decisions.

The games are more competitive now, but I still can't get away from the fact that so much of the world cup has been ruined by the VAR experimentation and pitiful refereeing.

They only ask the ref to review the footage if they think she's made a mistake. She didn't give that penalty, and it wasn't a penalty, so there was no need to use it.

The Sweden game against Thailand had a scandalous decision go against the Thais, where the referee didn’t give a penalty and it wasn’t a penalty. The Champions League final had a scandalous decision go against Spurs, when the referee didn’t give a penalty and it wasn’t a penalty.

This is nowhere near as simple as you are making out.

This tournament has certainly been better in terms of fitness, professionalism, global coverage and getting Womens football out there to everyone, but the shocking officials and the inconsistency of VAR have spoiled it a bit.

Watched most of the games from the 2015 tourney in Canada and enjoyed that more. Feels like it's almost lost a bit of it's innocence.

Sweden vs Thailand. Sweden’s penalty is a terrible decision.

Japan are out because of a nonsensical decision which was clearly a mistake.

If those were penalties, then France should have had one tonight. Even if the French penalty was never a penalty and rightly not given, that doesn’t excuse the earlier decisions.

All of that being said, the better referees are making the calls at this stage in the tournament.

England could be playing a seal clubbing Eskimo XI and I still wouldn’t want them to win.

The Seal Clubbers got papped oot by the Rudolph munchers.  Sweden win on two counts...reindeer is delicious.
