Week 43 update

There was a time when Frank Bough, who has died aged 87, was rarely off BBC television. In the 1970s and 80s his ubiquity as a presenter saw him fronting a wide range of programmes, from breakfast television to sport, news magazines and holiday programmes, with an unruffled and genial professionalism. He could be presenting the Grand National coverage one day and interviewing the prime minister Edward Heath a few days later.

His was a safe, avuncular presence. He seemed relaxed and unfazed by live TV; was always dressed unthreateningly in neutral suits and ties for serious news programmes and informal sweaters for more leisurely shows. One of his nicknames among colleagues was Uncle Frank and, as Michael Parkinson once described him on Desert Island Discs, he was seen as “the most unassailable performer on British television”.

Assailable he certainly was, however. All changed one day in 1988 when he admitted to the News of the World that he had indeed been snorting cocaine and dressing up in women’s lingerie while attending a sex party in Mayfair. Unfortunately, his decision to tell all to the paper in an attempt to ameliorate its coverage only made things worse. He told the paper: “I am not a wicked man, nor do I mean any harm or evil to people. I’ve made mistakes but everyone is entitled to do that. No one suffered but my wife, my family and myself. It was a brief but appalling period in my life. Don’t condemn my entire career for a brief episode I regret.”

Occasionally there are people in the Dead Pool who score that I've never heard of. Then again he retired from television when I was 6, so I suppose I have an excuse. Then again...

In late August 1992, Bough was reported to have been involved in a dungeon orgy.[16][17][18][19] The press published photographs of him leaving the flat of a prostitute who specialised in sadomasochism.[20] He said in a television interview: "everybody, when they have difficulties with their marriage or sexuality, surely has the right to sort out these things in the privacy of their own home."[21] His role as a rugby presenter ended after this second scandal.[1]

Sounds like some guy. Bough was 87 when he died, so he's worth 38 Base Points. he was a Solo Shot for @speckled tangerine, so he gets an extra 50 for a total of 88 points.

He had grown up admiring his United predecessor Eddie Colman, a right-half of greater natural gifts, who died in the Munich air disaster of 1958. By that time Stiles had already represented England schoolboys as a right-half, displaying attacking talents that would be somewhat inhibited in his later career.

He made his debut for United, in fact, as an inside-forward in the 1960-61 season, playing 26 league matches and scoring twice.

When United reached the FA Cup final in 1963, and Stiles had missed just one cup tie besides playing 31 league games, he was, to his deep disappointment, dropped. The following season he was picked for just 17 league games, but fought his way back into the regular side in the 1964-65 season, missing only one league match in that First Division title-winning season.

At only 5ft 6in, prematurely balding, with few teeth and severe short-sightedness that required him to wear contact lenses during matches and thick glasses off the field, Stiles was an unusual-looking footballing specimen. But whatever he lacked in classical good looks and physique, he made up for with intelligence and a highly competitive, even intimidating, demeanour.

As he did for England, at United he stifled the activity of opposing sides’ key players, won the ball and then gave it to his team’s creative talents, such as Charlton and George Best. That formula once more proved irresistible in the 1966-67 season, when United again won the First Division title, and was decisive in the 1968 European Cup final against Benfica.

I feel like players from this generation dying is a stark reminder of where football and sport in general has been going since the turn of the century, and it makes me a little sad.
