The Pie and Bovril Dead Pool 2020

Week 43 update

Three this week. Up first is a death that apparently happened on the 21st, the TV presenter and man responsible for BBC Breakfast, Frank Bough: https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2020/oct/26/frank-bough-obituary

Quote

There was a time when Frank Bough, who has died aged 87, was rarely off BBC television. In the 1970s and 80s his ubiquity as a presenter saw him fronting a wide range of programmes, from breakfast television to sport, news magazines and holiday programmes, with an unruffled and genial professionalism. He could be presenting the Grand National coverage one day and interviewing the prime minister Edward Heath a few days later.

His was a safe, avuncular presence. He seemed relaxed and unfazed by live TV; was always dressed unthreateningly in neutral suits and ties for serious news programmes and informal sweaters for more leisurely shows. One of his nicknames among colleagues was Uncle Frank and, as Michael Parkinson once described him on Desert Island Discs, he was seen as “the most unassailable performer on British television”.

Assailable he certainly was, however. All changed one day in 1988 when he admitted to the News of the World that he had indeed been snorting cocaine and dressing up in women’s lingerie while attending a sex party in Mayfair. Unfortunately, his decision to tell all to the paper in an attempt to ameliorate its coverage only made things worse. He told the paper: “I am not a wicked man, nor do I mean any harm or evil to people. I’ve made mistakes but everyone is entitled to do that. No one suffered but my wife, my family and myself. It was a brief but appalling period in my life. Don’t condemn my entire career for a brief episode I regret.”

Occasionally there are people in the Dead Pool who score that I've never heard of. Then again he retired from television when I was 6, so I suppose I have an excuse. Then again...

Quote

On 13 June 1988, Bough left[10] the BBC for a rest before being sacked, after the News of the World reported he had taken cocaine and worn lingerie at sex parties involving prostitutes.[11][12][13] The newspaper's former deputy editor Paul Connew later said of the scandal: "It caused a sensation at the time, given Bough's public image as the squeaky clean front man of breakfast and sports television."[14]

Roy Greenslade, professor of journalism at City University London, said that Bough made a "terrible mistake" by agreeing to speak to newspapers prior to publication of personal allegations, worsening the story.[15]

In February 1989, Bough was hired by Sky News to present the Frank Bough Interview for Sky TV for two series. In September 1989 he also joined London Weekend Television where he fronted Six O'Clock Live until it was axed in Summer 1992. In between his news duties he presented ITV's coverage of that year's Rugby World Cup tournament.

In late August 1992, Bough was reported to have been involved in a dungeon orgy.[16][17][18][19] The press published photographs of him leaving the flat of a prostitute who specialised in sadomasochism.[20] He said in a television interview: "everybody, when they have difficulties with their marriage or sexuality, surely has the right to sort out these things in the privacy of their own home."[21] His role as a rugby presenter ended after this second scandal.[1]

Sounds like some guy. Bough was 87 when he died, so he's worth 38 Base Points. he was a Solo Shot for @speckled tangerine, so he gets an extra 50 for a total of 88 points.

Up second this week was the former Manchester United midfielder, Nobby Stiles: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/oct/30/nobby-stiles-obituary

Quote

Born in Collyhurst, Manchester, the son of Charlie, manager of an undertaker’s, and his wife, Kitty, Stiles joined Manchester United straight from school.

He had grown up admiring his United predecessor Eddie Colman, a right-half of greater natural gifts, who died in the Munich air disaster of 1958. By that time Stiles had already represented England schoolboys as a right-half, displaying attacking talents that would be somewhat inhibited in his later career.

He made his debut for United, in fact, as an inside-forward in the 1960-61 season, playing 26 league matches and scoring twice.

When United reached the FA Cup final in 1963, and Stiles had missed just one cup tie besides playing 31 league games, he was, to his deep disappointment, dropped. The following season he was picked for just 17 league games, but fought his way back into the regular side in the 1964-65 season, missing only one league match in that First Division title-winning season.

At only 5ft 6in, prematurely balding, with few teeth and severe short-sightedness that required him to wear contact lenses during matches and thick glasses off the field, Stiles was an unusual-looking footballing specimen. But whatever he lacked in classical good looks and physique, he made up for with intelligence and a highly competitive, even intimidating, demeanour.

As he did for England, at United he stifled the activity of opposing sides’ key players, won the ball and then gave it to his team’s creative talents, such as Charlton and George Best. That formula once more proved irresistible in the 1966-67 season, when United again won the First Division title, and was decisive in the 1968 European Cup final against Benfica.

It's worth noting that in addition to his playing career, the Man United website's obituary also mentions his time there as a youth team coach, helping to bring through the fabled Class of 92: https://www.manutd.com/en/news/detail/obituary-of-man-utd-and-england-legend-nobby-stiles Given the collective state that club has been in for the past decade you can often forget the humble and reasonable beginnings of football. I feel like players from this generation dying is a stark reminder of where football and sport in general has been going since the turn of the century, and it makes me a little sad.

Stiles had an unremarkable international career. He was 78 when he died, making him worth 47 Base Points. That score goes to @Billy Jean King, @BillyAnchor, @Bobby Skidmarks, @dee_62, @expatowner, @Fuctifano, @HI HAT, @ICTJohnboy, @Indale Winton, @JustOneCornetto, @lichtgilphead, @Lofarl, @LoonsYouthTeam, @Meden89, @Musketeer Gripweed, @peasy23, @qos_75, @RussellAnderson, @Savage Henry, @sleazy, @The_Craig, @The DA, @The Naitch and @thistledo. He was a Vice-Captain for @Flybhoy for an extra 24 points and 71 total, and a Captain for @pub car king for an extra 47 points and 94 in total.

Final death this week was James Bond, Sean Connery: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-54761824

Quote

The Scottish actor was best known for his portrayal of James Bond, being the first to bring the role to the big screen and appearing in seven of the spy thrillers.

Sir Sean died peacefully in his sleep in the Bahamas, having been "unwell for some time", his son said.

His acting career spanned seven decades and he won an Oscar in 1988 for his role in The Untouchables.

Sir Sean's other films included The Hunt for Red October, Highlander, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and The Rock.

Jason Connery said his father "had many of his family, who could be in the Bahamas, around him" when he died overnight in Nassau. Much of the Bond film Thunderball had been filmed there.

He said: "We are all working at understanding this huge event as it only happened so recently, even though my dad has been unwell for some time.

"A sad day for all who knew and loved my dad and a sad loss for all people around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift he had as an actor."

His publicist Nancy Seltzer said: "There will be a private ceremony followed by a memorial yet to be planned once the virus has ended."

He leaves his wife Micheline and sons Jason and Stephane.

The Guardian usually does a good line in picture galleries when someone dies, and this is a really good one: https://www.theguardian.com/film/gallery/2010/aug/24/sean-connery-80

Shame on The Guardian for not having a picture of Nobby Stiles in a jacuzzi surrounded by fit birds in bikinis.

I hate to be that guy but, etc etc...

50/50 Winner should be on 172 points because you've not counted his score from Julian Bream (and your spreadsheet total is off by 2)

cdisaccie should be on 143, because you didn't transfer his points for Frankie Banali over from the spreadsheet

sjc should be on 80, because you didn't transfer the points for James Harris from the spreadsheet to the high score table.

And microdave appears twice in the table with scores, 84 and 44. 84 is the right one!

Other than that, looks good to me.

A brave intervention. 😁

Make sure that you've got your tin helmet on tonight.

And then wait for the invitation to take over next year. 8)

I won't be entering next year, it's all been a bit much today. We should be enjoying 3 high profile deaths this week and @Miguel Sanchezhas ruined it.
