Coronavirus (COVID-19)

I suspect that Hanks and his family will have private worldwide medical insurance.

Also it depends on the situation, it's possible they'd recently travelled to an area which would set a red flag for testing. Bob Mahelp jumping to conclusions isn't surprising -although in this instance he's probably right.

If you phone up your doctor here with these symptoms......tired, achy, chills....1) they'll laugh at you and tell you to stay at home for a few days, take paracetamol and drink tea.

No way in a million years will you get the special treatment that the Hanks' got, 2) rushed into a private hospital for immediate testing. For normal people, they'll only test you under a very strict set of circumstances.

3) If any of us catch this virus, there's a huge chance that we won't even know about it. We'll just lie on the couch watching Sky Sports and drinking Lemsip until we feel better and go back to work.

1) Why would a doctor laugh at you for being sick?

2) This is exactly the Malaysian government's plan for all cases.

3) Maybe. Or you might die.

You do realise that this is added to all the other dangers to people's lives? It's lots of extra people who will die who wouldn't have otherwise died.

Your argument is like saying drink-driving isn't a big deal because smoking kills more people.

How many people have died in the UK over the years as a result of ideological tory w**k austerity? Where was the BBC, Sky News and most of the MSM outlets? Where was the panic?
This will be far less damaging by comparison. But because it impacts the rich equally, it's considered major news.

I don't know. How many has austerity killed?

Regardless, this is an extra cause of death which is particularly lethal to the weakest in society but has shown that it is a risk to us all and to people all over the world.

It's hardly nothing.

Hanks has severe diabetes.

Being a 'normal person' will have nowt to do with his case.

Hospitals have been asked to plan for at least a doubling of intensive care capacity in the next few weeks. We can probably do this by reconfiguring current areas to an extent. If the situation progresses like in Italy (so far we model similarly, but around 16 days behind), then we will be providing intensive care in other sites like theatres.

There will be a major hit to staffing. We are modeling for around a quarter of staff to be off (either sick, isolated or caring for dependents). Routine admissions will be stopped. We will be redeploying anaesthetic and theatre staff to support critical care.

We have learned a lot from Italy and their doctors who have been excellent in providing data and their experiences. They have a large number of relatively young patients are requiring several weeks of ventilation and other measures. This is being taken very seriously as we have the potential to be overwhelmed in the acute sector.

We have to remember that all of the other things people end up in hospital and intensive care with will still be continuing all the same time as well.

1) Poetic licence. They won't laugh at you, but they will ask you a pre-determined set of questions to eliminate common colds/normal flu etc. That is if you can get through to your local  quack....everyone who sneezes will be phoning them already.

2) Good for them. Explain to me how logistically that will work in the UK, when everyone who feels a bit under the weather phones up and demands to be tested ?

3) You can die today of pretty much anything. Maybe your heart will give up because it's been flooded with lager and lard pies. Obviously if you have under-lying health issues you should be extra vigilant, but for the vast, vast majority....if you even catch the virus....you'll pull through fine.

Perhaps you might want to consider the impact of this on people who require medical treatment for other reasons.

I'd hate to be a UK resident having a heart attack in about two weeks' time. Or being in a car crash.

You seem to be going out of your way to miss the consequences of this.

Yes. I don't really see the benefit in delaying these measures which are pretty much guaranteed to be in place in the next few days/ weeks.
Why wait until we have it on the scale of Italy, when preventative action could be taking place now?

I think the idea is that if the measures are implemented too early before the peak, they’ll have to last longer making it more likely that people will break rank during the actual peak.

We don't know that yet. Not enough people have fully recovered and been monitored afterwards.

We know that the complications of this can lead to conditions that give people chronic lung damage, for example.

I'm curious as to why you think the WHO and medical services around the world would want to put themselves under massive strain by exaggerating this.

I got an acquaintance on facebook convinced the government are letting Coronavirus turn into an epidemic as some sort of ethnic cleansing in the UK

The government were pretty clever at releasing it in Asia  first to throw people off the scent.  BJ isn't as dumb as we think it seems.
