MuckleMoo
I appreciate PnB is a very small slice of a rather specialist demographic, but: could we please have a show of hands for those you know: 1. immediate householders who have Covid. 2. those who have connections to, but self sufficent, family members with/suspected Covid;. 3. Work colleagues self isolating with suspected Covid. 4. Known self isolations because of Covid. 5. Any other known hospitalisations as a result or Covid? it’s definitely real but I’d be surprised if, in our little corner of the world, we’ve got more than two dozen or so individuals directly, seriously and significantly affected. Prove me wrong? (that does of course never deny individual hospitalisations or deaths as trivial. What I am trying to do to is get some sort of a measure of real experience vs what is being fed through the media). Three people I know have had it. First was in his early 40's and was recovering from pneumonia at the time. Spoke to him on the phone on a Wednesday and he seemed fine, he died on the sunday.Second is a guy in his 60's with very poor health. Had to be admitted to intensive care and was on oxygen but has made a full recovery.Close friend caught it about two months ago, late 30's with no underlying health issues. Admitted to hospital where he then had a stroke, he's still in hospital
Rugster
One friend had it, was in ICU for a while. One colleague had it, dead.

Have some faith in Magic
I had it (fever and feeling like shite for 4 days) and my wife (taste and smell) just when the first lockdown was announced. Had antibody tests come up positive in the summer. Know of one person at my work that died. Don't know anyone else that has had it at all.

Same The only saving grace from the original “lockdown” was the weather was perfect and people could get out walks/cycles etc to help with their mental health. Going to work (that’s if you’re lucky enough to still have a job) in the dark, coming home in the dark and having nothing fun to do on your days off for potentially months is a thought
Todd_is_God
RE: the NHS. What would have been more cost effective? Year on year investment over the last decade in the NHS, including capacity and staffing numbers, or the eye watering amount of money chucked at NPI's and the JRS / JSS over a 7 month period, during which time the economy took a nose dive?

The answer is the former. There has been a huge underinvestment in the NHS under the Tories. They also underplayed the preparations for a global pandemic despite it being the single largest threat to society, as the Sunday Times reported earlier in the year. Hopefully an independent Scotland will prioritise funding of the health service, I’m fairly certain in doing so they will be reflecting the priority of the majority of Scots.

Self evidently the year on year investment. Given that wasn't done we're left with the current shit show.

The UK’s hospital capacity is the lowest of the major European countries, less than half of that of Germany, and only really in the same ballpark as Spain, which is still higher. This lockdown is taking place because of hospital capacity, which is projected to be breached in the Midlands and the South West by mid-November. No other reason. This is the fault of successive Conservative government.

madwullie
Mother in law had it. Icu for a few days then back to a ward and discharged. She's not back to full fitness yet. Mother in law's pal was ventilated but since moved back to a normal ward. I was childhood pals with the boys that was in a coma in vietnam. Don't know how he's doing now, but AFAIK he's OK considering. Know a few folk (say 5) who think they had it fists wave, symptomatic but not crippling, and this was before you could get tested so can't be 100% they actually had it. Son's pal's gran and grandad both currently have it but not bad enough to be admitted More than a few kids in the street been told to isolate by T&T.

After Covid will we just go back to ignoring that and not caring anymore? That doesn't really address the hypothetical, and TBF in not sure it's a fair comparison. For a start, were the nhs every winter to be approaching breaking point, I'm sure measures would be implemented, in fact, I imagine they are, but it doesn't get as critical so as plebs we don't hear about it. But mainly, every winter we don't have a novel virus that necessitates being treated completely separately from other parients no matter how poorly they are. That has serious implications for staffing and resources that simply aren't an issue in a normal winter. I suppose the question is also, what could we have done differently that would reduce the impact of a second wave, assuming it was inevitable, that would mean a lockdown wasn't projected as being necessary. Its well known lockdowns are a blunt instrument, but what other options are there given we can't turn back time and do stuff we didn't do.

Obviously more resources, but given health care systems in far better shape than us are in trouble too, I think there's a chance we'd still be on the ropes anyway. Won't hold my breath, but hopefully some lessons will be learned and as someone else said, in future rather than bang on about how amazing the nhs is, we actually give it the funding it deserves. I mean, what a fucking ridiculous moment for Johnson to release the video announcing awards for health care workers. They take the obviously wrong decision at so obviously the wrong moment so frequently, it's hard not to think it's deliberate.
Billy Jean King
Interesting to hear the wording of any lockdown today in England. Some of the press online sites suggesting it could be in the form of a new additional 4th tier to their existing system thus making it pretty close to what we have coming into force on Monday. The Sturgeon hating Gammons ain't going to like that !
