Has there been any word on the restrictions and if they are likely to be binned or extended?

She’s currently waffling about how restrictions are basically pointless now, but given she went in with two feet, she can’t let us out our rooms yet, to save face.

Over the last week, something like 1.2 million folk in the UK have tested positive. If we go by the old "death within 28 days of a positive test" criteria, then all of the people in that 1.2 million who die over the next 3 weeks for any reason (sucked into a jet engine, fired from a trebuchet, binge watched Star Trek Voyager) will be counted as a covid death. So the deaths numbers will rise but not necessarily as a result of Covid.

@craigkillie - am I right in thinking this, or is their criteria better than this?

She basically admitted the restrictions don’t have much effect and there’s no money to go any further.

Quite surprised she said it but it’s welcome.

Full crowds back from the 17th it is.

What's the logic here?

No symptoms + test positive = you have covid

Symptoms and test positive with LFT you need to confirm.

If they're now fully trusting LFT's why would you need to go for a PCR if you have symptoms, have done an LFT and has returned positive?

Can get it if you have symptoms and return a negative LFT.  Go and get a more accurate PCR to verify.

Technically LFTs are not designed for use by symptomatic people I think

I was just thinking what might happen then. Celtic scheduled to host Hibs on Monday 17th and a full card of fixtures on Tuesday 18th. She’ll need to confirm her intentions 100% next week.

Forgive me if this is some sort of Mandela effect, but I thought when they first came on the scene the opposite was true?

Aye seen that, no official announcement till Friday so still holding out a little hope they have a change of heart as I'm meant to fly on 13th. It's pish too because you can't transit through Bangkok and have to fly direct to Phuket to do the sandbox, heard there was talk of other sandbox places including Koh Chang which would suit me. Will wait to see what they say tomorrow but not doing quarantine in BK. f**k that, heard its torture.

Stepson and his wife had no problems, to the best of my knowledge

Another thing is Omicron with its nasty ability to spread faster than someone with it not noticing until they have tested positive should be ripping through the care homes by now, even with the strongest measures taken in prevention there should be at least two or three homes in trouble by now. I've not seen anything on any news feeds on this apart from a shortage of staff due to having to isolate having tested positive of course. Usually we would be told if there was a large number of positive cases, but silence.
Read this which is encouraging - https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/homenews/19825327.glasgow-care-home-boss-says-nonsense-ban-visiting/
Unless the it hasn't happened yet which I seriously doubt, it should show how much of a threat so far Omicron is to our most vulnerable. I really hope I'm right here.
Has this been brought up yet by our FM?
You won't see it on the news.

KCC in Dundee (where my Step-Dad got infected) has been closed to visitors since last Friday because of an outbreak.

Thankfully, apart from an initial scare, he on the road to recovery.

Ross brought up the fact Swinney quoted incorrect and incomplete numbers (as referenced here yesterday) for infection rates England v Scotland.

She’s gone off on a total waffle and basically lying that Swinney used the most up to date info yesterday. Saying it wasn’t a competition and would fluctuate etc. Then concluded that England was still worse than Scotland lol

This is exactly how the data has been counted, so you are correct to say this. I'd imagine the actual number of positive cases are somewhat higher, since the data only includes "new cases" as far as I'm aware, so it wouldn't count those who have tested positive for a second time (don't know if this literally extends back to March 2020 or if there's a cut-off time).

Obviously you can take it to the logical endpoint that if every single person had covid in the last 28 days, then every single death would be counted as a covid death. If we knew the exact rate of hospitalisation in non-covid times we could probably start to disentangle the figures a bit.

There will obviously be official figures that include "genuine" covid deaths, ie where covid appears on the death certificate, but of course it's possible that some of the deaths outside of that category have been exacerbated by covid (or covid restrictions) in some way or other - for example missing out on treatment due to self-isolation and/or cancelled hospital appointments.

I could be wrong, but I'm sure the advice was always that if you had symptoms you should go and get a PCR test. LFTs were about catching asymptomatic cases.
