Since I posted that, I ditched the Tassimo and got a De'Longhi Magnifica S Smart bean to cup machine. Far far better coffee, no plastic waste to worry about, and far cheaper per cup from what I can work out.

This is what I got for my Christmas and this is the end result with the Nescafé azera. Tastes no bad to be fair. I like my coffee but wouldn’t say I was a complete connoisseur.

Yup, heat the milk in the microwave and zap it with one of these that cost under a tenner. Just needs a quick rinse under the tap after.

My new machine has a milk frother but I can't be bothered with the hassle of using and cleaning it at the moment, so I just brew my coffee, add the milk then zap it all for a minute in the microwave. I still have some froth from the coffee so I'm happy with that.

Got an older (I think) version of your one and do much the same, but heat the milk in the mug in the microwave first, then pour the coffee and give it a quick stir with a teaspoon. Enough froth for me with the crema.

The trick is to always use the same size mug so you know how much milk to use.

I’ve stuck with Gaggia machines for years, they last a decade at least - although weigh the same as a small family car. Got a bean to cup for everyday use and an ancient brass espresso machine for when I want to make an effort.

Occasionally get them serviced despite the Gaggia man coming round disappointingly not being the excuse for some very middle class porn.

Unless I’m not asking the right questions.

The wife insisted on buying a magimix Nespresso Vertue Next machines. Its the size of an elephant and the pods are like dinner plates.  Tried it the other day, lukewarm coffee.

Utter shite.

Back to Braithwaites and the cafetiere for me.

You have to heat up the cup with boiling water with every machine I've tried.

Got this one for Christmas. Grind up the beans myself and it makes an excellent cup. I take mine black so no need to faff around with milk. I'm delighted with it.

You have to be careful with those, they can break your arm you know.
