welshbairn
Time for @throbber to man up and invite him to Ruel Street imo. He'll probably bottle it as usual.

I'm all for removing that and hauling it down the M8 in triumph, as Greater Greenock's Stone of Destiny moment. First we take the statue, then we resilt the upper river and charge tariffs on all 'inland' trade. We'll be as rich as Singapore in no time. Individual tolls at every Greenock station.

AsimButtHitsASix
Eventually all this decolonisation of the world will lead back to the removal of the filthy anglicised names the towns and cities of Scotland have been subjected to for too long. Gaelic, Cumbric, Pictish, Scots and Norn will become the mother tongues of the people of this land and the letter yogh (ȝ) will be added to keyboards from Lerwick to Stranraer.

I left school over a decade ago and pretty sure this was covered, along with loads of other Scottish, UK and world history. For a subject that is only compulsory for 2 years they do alright. You can cover racism in other areas as well - reading Othello in English was a formative experience for me for example. Schools/putting something in the curriculum are a small part of the issue imo - the main problem is that Britain at large hasn't really ever accepted that the empire was a bad thing. It doesn't really matter that much what you study in your hour of history a week between 13 and 15 if that doesn't change imo. Had a mate who taught history in North Wales. He was fed up as the secondary school pupils got to choose what area to specialise in, and it was always WW2. Really enjoyed history in my three years in Sweden 8-12 yo. Got the French Revolution, American Civil War, Seven and Hundred Year wars, and the history of poverty driven emigration from Sweden to America, just what I remember.

Most of them can't name a single one. It's not like the majority of the statues we have in Scotland are beloved icons anyway. Who gives a f**k about Robert Peel in Scotland? Once the other 7 are repatriated time to get statues up of Frankie Boyle, Darius Danesh, Mhairi Black, Alex Ferguson, Nikki Cross, Scrooge McDuck and Liz Lochhead Quack lives matter.
Todd_is_God
When I was at school I thought the history I was taught was very varied and covered a wide range of topics including the French Revolution and the Slave Trade. It's clearly impossible to cover absolutely everything in a few years, however. In 2020 we have more information at our finger tips than ever before. If you want to learn about a specific subject it is only laziness that prevents you gaining a basic understanding of it.

Paid for by public subscription of course. (Voluntary or otherwise.) Yeah, the statue of Dundas in Edinburgh was paid for with a collection from the Royal Navy. The Duke of Sutherland statue was paid for from public subscriptions. The statue in Bristol was erected by a charity/guilds organisation in Bristol over 150 years after the Colston died.

He makes a frothy mouthed incoherent rant about, amongst other things - Little Mix, believe it or not. He's also calling on anyone who calls themselves a lad and a 'football lad' to get down and protect the statues next week, stirring stuff. This is just marvelous. He thinks the police's main role during protests should be to "protect the statues". He loves Churchill so much that at the four minute mark he thinks the man died fighting Hitler. Little Mix should be cleaning statues. Priceless stuff.
