Amazing as having 2-3 interchangeable players for each position would be, we simply can't afford it. So you have a very good core 16 then a decent set of backups. When you get to the point 5 or 6 of the best players are out, you're going to suffer a bit. In the darkest days of the Second Levein era we did appear to have 2-3 interchangeable players for each position in as much as it didn’t seem to really matter which ones were selected we were still shit Edited September 2, 2022 by topcat(The most tip top)

They bang on about "quality over quantity", which acknowledges some degree of trade-off. Having interchangeable back-ups in every position sounds more like "quality and quantity". The disappointing thing for me is that it looked like at least 3 quality additions was the aim a few weeks ago and we've only got 1 of those plus an emergency Boyce replacement. There was also chat about trying to get players in with European experience but it hasn't materialised (not in time to actually play in Europe at least). Were our targets unrealistic? Are we not looking in the right markets? Were we just unlucky? I don't know, hopefully lessons have been learned.

I can accept that approach throughout the rest of the squad, but the lack of a decent back-up goalkeeper is an obvious potential problem. As you say, lessons to be learned. And we might pick up a few free agents, who knows.
VincentGuerin
Seems Zander Clark is a goer. Would be tremendous news. As galling as it would be having to cheer on a player called 'Zander' (fucking hell), it's better than having effectively no sub goalkeeper.

Ideal though

He's not got a club, we're playing so many games that he's bound to play for us this season. Gordon won't be around forever.

Did wonder if we might go for him at some point if his England move didn't materialise. Not many teams looking for a number 1 keeper in September. Hopefully more to come.

I don't think Gordon will be thinking about retirement yet, he's often spoke about wanting to play well into his 40's and if his form doesn't dip significantly he'll be first choice. Clark is a very good signing though, means we won't be relegated with Stewart in goals if Gordon gets injured.

the jambo-rocker
Thank f**k we've got him in time. If Gordon had gotten injured, the idea of Cheesy against Fiorentina could have been potential Dundee United to AZ Alkmaar bad.
