Well played. It felt apt to offer the draw on move 80.

I thought I was winning that ending but I must have miscounted the advance of my e pawn. I was convinced I could get it promoted before your a pawn. Then I wasn't so sure. As soon as it comes off we are hurtling towards a draw save for a tactical Knight fork either way.

Congratulations on the title. Well earnt, you managed to navigate your way through all the threats and traps I attempted to setup in that.

Ultimately, I've been done in by some cheapos this season. I've lost two games to Qxh7++. I'm now paranoid about any and all threats on Harry (my h pawn). I also don't seem to cope very well when I have multiple games going. A note to self, finish my league games in 1 week would be helpful.

When you pushed your d-pawn that was the chance to get the win then.

I thought you were going to win at this point but your next move probably killed any chance of the win.

This was the position:

Your response was:

When you should have moved:

You should then some moves down the line take his h-pawn and it's almost impossible to defend against.

Advancing the e-pawn after taking the h-pawn draws the black king and Knight away and allows the white Knight go threaten the black a-pawn.

Black is stretched on 3 fronts and it should result in the white win (though that does take a lot of patience).

The final position clearly is a draw.

Yeah, that is a fair assessment. I played Ke3 as I was slightly worried about Kc5 and that a pawn rolling down the board. I was convinced I was winning either way tbh and thought Ke3 was slightly safer. Evidently not.

So I was playing through all the lines at that point, but TBF reckoned black was still able to at least get "une poursuite constante", or even force a draw by insufficent material, whichever way white moved the king.

Not 100% certain on that, and TBF I was glad to stop having to think about it when the white king moved as it did.

I was there for the taking earlier, but that's more a stategic late-game assessment.

Thanks for the kind words @Trogdor.  I'm sure we'll have some great matches going forward.

I'm also sure we can both thank @Aim Herefor his excellent work with organising and maintaining this league.

Truly appreciated.

To finish off what's been an excellent week for @ancientnoise they progress to the Semi-Final after my resignation. Analysis indicates they didn't put a foot wrong so to speak so more than worthy winners.

You cheapo me and then fail to avenge me? Hopefully my team give yours a going over tomorrow.

A little preseason puzzle.

Screenshot_20240218_112947_Chess.thumb.jpg.7857a4d948faba7b797ecc17bd9bc9ba.jpg

From a recent game.

I'm down as black but white has blundered.

What's the sequence of moves that won his Queen (or leads to checkmate if he doesn't follow the line) - the last move is rated brilliant by the engine.

After BxN QxB, Qxh2+ then if Qg2 Re2+ forces KxR and you capture Q but rather than Qg2 they can play Kf1 and best I can see is Qxb2 eventually picking up R.

Other line I thought of was Qe3+ as if Kf1 you have Bh3++ but if they instead play Kg2 then run out of attacking options especially once they play Nbd2

QxB

Qxh2+ - moving King to f1 results in lost pawn and rook (and Knight and Queen further down the line)

P&B Cup Winter 23-24

So, just waiting for the @Leicesterlichtie@Aim Heregame to declare and we'll have the semi-final line-up.

Can see that game is well under way, no rush guys: https://www.chess.com/game/daily/621398821

Spreadsheet updated here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17WN7fAFWHEjwEFmI5JgTBs95NbaGBGkqpnReiRmCfkQ/edit#gid=861550279

While we wait for that outcome - if anyobody who isn't  @Curmudgeon, @pleslie99or either of the players in the live game would like to step forward and volunteer to make the draw for the semi, that would be much appreciated.

First to respond gets it.
