East of Scotland Football League – Conference X

Armadale Thistle 6 – 0 Pumpherston Juniors (HT: 2 – 0)

A fairly comprehensive victory for league leaders Armadale Thistle today, pretty much one way traffic from the first whistle to the last.

Armadale took an early lead through a Scott Dalziel header.  Colin “Coco” Strickland swung in a superb cross from the left wing which was well met by Dalziel to nod home from 6 yards out.  The Pumpherston keeper, who actually had a good game, despite the score line, was left helpless.  The home side continued to press and the advantage was doubled just minutes later, Dalziel again with the goal as he controlled JJ Henderson’s driven pass on his chest to set up a volley from the edge of the 18 yard box into the bottom corner of the Pumphy goal.

Armadale had chances to increase the lead but were denied on a couple of occasions by the Pumphy keeper and a few efforts went narrowly wide.  Half time: 2 – 0.

The third goal came less than five minutes into the second half and it was scored by my man of the match, Stuart “Stoogsy” Mcleod.  He received the ball at the corner of the 18 yard box and with one touch he set himself up to rifle a powerful shot past the keeper into the top corner of the net.  The Dale were now well on top and it was 4 – 0 ten minutes later with Mcleod again the goalscorer. Leaving a string of Pumpherston defenders trailing in his wake, he burst into the box after a slaloming run down the inside left channel to finish it low and hard across the keeper into the opposite corner.

Armadale’s fifth goal came around the 70 minute mark as Calum Rodger’s tremendous delivery from the right wing was converted by Colin “Coco” Strickland.  More superb saves by the Pumpherston keeper kept the score down but Armadale were to seal the win with a sixth goal a few minutes before full time.  Fraser Keast tapped home from close range after the Pumphy keeper pulled off another great save to touch a Coco Strickland curler onto the underside of the crossbar.  The rebound dropped nicely for Keast to convert.

Man of the Match: Stuart “Stoogsy” Mcleod.  Put in a hell of a shift on the left hand side of midfield and was scored two absolutely cracking goals.

Damp conditions at Volunteer Park deprived this conference of its "Match of the Day"; so the main story was Bo'ness Athletic returning to 2nd with a narrow win at Livingston United. There is another head-to-head of enormous significance next Saturday when they host Syngenta.

Saturday 19th February 2022

Fauldhouse United v West Calder United
Stoneyburn v Livingston United
Whitburn v Bathgate Thistle

By my reckoning Edinburgh College v Pumpherston will become only 4th game in Scottish senior football history to be played indoor, following Spartans v LTHV (2016-17 EOS Qualifying Cup Final), Heriot-Watt Uni v Stirling Uni EOS and Heriot-Watt Uni v Leith (both 2017-18 EOS League - latter on Groundhop). There have also been some youth games plus matches in the womens and old west junior grades.

The Tennents Sixes (holders: Partick Thistle) were irrefutably played indoors, involving a dizzying array of Seniors teams. I once saw Manchester City play there. A different time indeed.

I did see Heriot-Watt University play a touring team from Northern Ireland called Michelin FC in a friendly at Oriam Spacedome. It was on a hot June day, about 30oC outside, and wonderfully cool inside in the shade.

More football games should be played indoors in June, as I cannot bear heat.

I might pop along this weekend, Storm Eunice dependent, this time I will bring my big coat.

FT Edinburgh College 2-2 Pumpherston
(at the National Indoor Stadium)

As it transpired outdoor conditions were much better than the authorities had led people to expect - but nevertheless there was the welcome if somewhat surreal spectacle of competitive indoors football in outer Edinburgh tonight. Still a pretty rare footballing spectacle.

Pumpherston made the best of the early running; clipping a cross onto the bar then blazing over with the goal gaping. They eventually took the lead from a drilled effort with about a quarter of the game elapsed. However the academics roared back and scored a pair of excellent goals from sweeping attacks to their obvious joy. HT 2-1 as the greenhouse effect saw a sheen of moisture settle over parts of the surface.

Second half didn't quite live up to its predecessor. Both side pressed for weaknesses and occasionally threatened then hosts should have put the game out of sight... but with a virtual open goal beckoning Pumphy's goalie pulled off a magnificent block with his fists. Well might his outfield thank his efforts over 90mins when an attack was blasted home for 2-2 and a share of the spoils.

Decent crowd of higher 2 figures. Evident from twitter that various groundhoppers were present... here are some of their snaps:

Boness athletic 2-1 syngenta. The dyes out the blocks early scored in the first minute. Boness equalised through tiwi daramola.

Boness down to 10 men macissac was red carded for denying a goal scoring opportunity.

Syngenta should have had a penalty. Syngenta played was about to hit the ball and the boness player brought him down.

But it was boness who grabbed the winner with scott sinclair who didn't have his greatest game but got his goal.

Tiwi daramola on the counter won a penalty but missed it. Boness dug deep to hold out for the win and deserved in my opinion

After last night's novelty a dramatic day - as Bo'ness Athletic won the big match at home to Syngenta and go top while Whitburn steamrolled their game with Bathgate to move in behind them.

League games reduce significantly in tempo for next few weeks as King Cup and League Cup sectional ties predominate.

Good time to take stock and consider how matters are poised for the run-in.

Bo'ness Athletic are latest to acquire the driving seat, sat 1pt clear with 1 game-in-hand. However both Whitburn and Armadale are tucked in just 1pt and 2pts behind respectively. We have to drop 7pts to find Syngenta who have gradually sunk as season progressed. They'll be looking to turn their 3 games-in-hand into vital points.

Remaining "head-to-heads":

Sat 7th May       Bo'ness Athletic v Whitburn     Syngenta v Armadale Thistle
Sat 21st May     Armadale Thistle v Bo'ness Athletic

no dates yet       Armadale Thistle v Whitburn     Syngenta v Bo'ness Athletic

What a cracking title race this is developing into.

The top 4 sides are all quality and have all already beaten each other this season.

Makes a very interesting run indeed, nobody could call it at this stage.

Earlier in the season it looked like syngentas to lose

I think they lost their 2nd manager a Couple of months ago that wouldn't have helped, but  they look to be a strong side going by their recent match v Spartans.

But whoever responded earlier in the season to the post after beating today's opponents earlier this season with 'another 6 points  👍' might not be so confident.
