Would rather have Kelly's medals than the national record tbf.

Sure, but you can certainly make a case that someone who ran faster than she ever did is better than her. I'm aware that tactics come into middle distance running as well as outright speed, but, even so, it wasn't that much of a "wild take", really.

She's just taken her national record, so by that criterion, she's the best Brit ever.

It was already Laura's record.

Kelly Holmes' Olympic achievements were great but she didn't face as strong competition.

Just to play devil's advocate, anything north of 400 metres is a tactical race and you could probably argue that Holmes had an even faster run in her than what she achieved in Athens. She set out to stalk the other main contenders and then outlast them on the home straight and she managed that. Could she have run faster? Possibly.

Yeah, as I said you can make the case that either Muir or Holmes are the best, depending on what criteria you use. I just don't believe it would be a "wild take" either way.

Just checked Wikipedia and saw that Holmes was 34 when she won her golds. I know Holmes had a fair few injury problems but must be a chance that Muir, who will be 31 when Paris comes around, could get even better?

It's not just her Olympic achievements.  She also won medals in worlds, europeans, commonwealth and indoors at 1500

Faith Kipyegon is now the double olympic champion and is a year younger than Muir. I suspect she might struggle to win the gold unless Kipyegon gets injured because the Kenyan looks unbeatable over 1500.

I actually thought Laura Muir would win bronze and that Hassan/Kipyegon would be neck and neck however it appears that 5000m/10000m specialist Hassan doesn't quite have the pace to keep up with Kipyegon and Muir over the shorter distance.
