Thorongil
Since circa the year 2000, Scotland has gradually (and now to a large degree) lost interest in New Year and “Hogmanay”. I think that’s something we can all agree on. But what is the reason? I think it’s because people realised it was meaningless pish.
scottsdad
Earlier than that. I remember loads of first footing in the early 90s, and by the mid 90s nobody was doing it. No idea why.

Melanius Mullarkey
STV have Sean Batty bringing in the bells. I’d rather go out and sit in the back garden.

Rhys McCabe Hype Train
Certainly in the East its probably got something to do with Underbelly wanting to charge residents £5 per cubic inch of air they breathe over the festive period. Can't comment on rest of the country, mind.

I liked it as a kid with my parents and family parties. As a young adult first footing was generally gate crashing people's houses and being unwelcome, which I soon got fed up with and maybe contributed to it's demise. A few mates still love it and I sometimes go through the motions. She's just tested positive for covid, so I'm off the hook this year. Thorongil
Going to take satisfaction in avoiding BBC1 Scotland with its twee, maudlin, mawkish, cloying, sentimental “another year gone” pish. Will be watching Cobra Kai on Netflix and maybe playing a few games of FIFA on the PS5.
Thorongil
It also annoys me how Steak Pie at New Year was invented and retconned in circa 2005 into being a “tradition”.
Hedgecutter
I partly blame mobile phones seeing as its demise coincided with everyone sending "Happy New Year! ..." texts from home rather than going out and saying it over a dram.

Miguel Sanchez
When I discovered Hogmanay steak pie - 6 years ago - I figured it was a con manufactured by the supermarkets.
