Casuals

My first viewing of the casual scene at Ayr was I think in the May of 86 , away Ayrshire Cup tie at Rugby Park where a group of young guns went into the Killie section of the enclosure in front of the stand . The following season after relegation it’s fair to say their numbers grew and they had their own bus going to most games . Ayr Service Crew was born . However agro at football was not a new thing and prior to the ASC there was the Ayr Troops , a band of skinheads from the Lochside area if I remember correctly and before them in the late 70’s and early 80’s a mixture of all youth cults , punks , mods , skins followed the club .

I remember this because I was in the enclosure. I remember thinking where the f**k did they come from. And for some strange reason a minor detail that the guy at the front of the Ayr casuals was wearing sun glasses. I can’t remember where the cops escorted them to though.

The only time I remember any battles were in the late 80’s when I was just old enough to go to games on my own.

One was against Kilmarnock at Somerset, there was a charge of Kilmarnock fans up the side street opposite the turnstiles. I jumped a garden wall to hide because I was A. A child and B. A shitebag. I met a guy I went to school with who was a Kilmarnock fan also hiding in the same garden

The second was at Firhill where 5 of us, all about 12 were chased by a group of Thistle fans, probably in their 30s. One of my mates fell and took a kicking. I remember thinking as I glanced over my shoulder while running, I should probably stop and help. I didn’t because I have an aversion to being kicked in the face and/or balls.

The only other violence I have seen has tended to be Ayr fans fighting each other, some rotund gentleman nutted another Ayr fan at Brechin, I think he suggested that he stopped using racist language and received a mouthful of forehead for his troubles. The rotund fan, if I recall correctly finally got banned for another incident, possibly at Alloa a few years later.

All my exposure to football violence was back in the 80's but down south. Certain Clubs had a reputation for it - Luton Town, Millwall (obviously), Chelsea, Cardiff City, Brighton - and obviously certain fixtures, , mostly Derby matches. I used to have a season ticket to White Hart Lane but never saw that much trouble at home games, and was too young and poor to get to many away games.

The worst I experienced personally was the foolish decision to go to the Aston Villa v Birmingham City game in the away end with my fanatic Birmingham City flatmate whilst at Uni in Cardiff, would have been 1983 or '84. Violence was in the air all day, there was a stabbing before the match and many arrests, compounded by fighting between the players in the tunnel and headbutt after the final whistle. Villa won 1-0 and City fans were kept in the ground for 30 mins after the game. Despite that we were jumped by Villa fans and chased across Villa Park by casuals carrying baseball bats that they must have stashed in bushes or something for the occasion before the game.

Fortunately back then I had a turn of pace and we both got away but I stopped going to games after that for almost ten years. The only time at a game I felt in fear for my life.

One that sticks out that ended up with no violence at all was some Falkirk fans wanted to attack an Ayr bus after a game at their weird ground.  They were all being 'held back' by one solitary female security guard.

One guy was doing that mental crisis screaming in angst hing and shouting about how he had nothing to lose.

It was all absolutely tragic stuff.

Stone Island & they stupit goggles featured.

Got a video somewhere.

I remember a raith game vs St Johnstone during the fraud anelka era. Me and @Torpar were near the olympia arcade when one of the saints casuals approached us, I just said something along the lines of "we aren't going to the football" or "we aren't raith fans" and he fucked off. Thank f**k, cos I think there were more  of them nearby.

Think it was well after the years of Raith signing players from the Paris 7-a-side league. I don't think we even said that much, I remember two groups of guys squaring up to each other, not a single punch being thrown then they ran off in opposite directions, some boy who must have been in his 50s pointed to us and said "there's two there!" I replied "nah mate" and he said, "nah they aren't" and ran off somewhere else. So technically you and I "ran them" claiming that as a result!

Not sure if it was that game you mentioned but there were certainly strong rumours that were doing the rounds of a game against St Johnstone at Starks where Saints fans went down Alison Street pre-match and got their totties. I vaguely remember Saints fans leaving the game early and the polis stopping them from coming down Pratt Street with a lot of pavement dancing and the usual hard man act when the police are holding you back.

I have no memories of the casual scene back in the 80's however my old man has regaled me of tales of scuffles back in the day with places like Arbroath and Montrose always being a bit dodgy.

From my period following the Rovers I've only really 'heard' of incidents more so than seen them. The St Johnstone game above being one and couple of instances on Links Street with Dunfermline fans and on one such ocassion a firework being launched at Dunfermline fans. Always used to hear of scuffles through at Brockville and pretty sure there was a newspaper article from several years ago about some pre-arranged fight on the outskirts of the Falkirk Stadium with a picture of a Rovers flag that said something casual related (cringe). Aberdeen at home in the Scottish Cup that finished 1-1 apparently had some boxing outside the Windsor but not with Rovers fans but with....Hearts fans. Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup donkeys ago had some random incident, I remember standing on the steps where the 50/50's are sold and a bus load of Killie fans came down Pratt Street (no club colours and very pished singing 'Killie til I die') and launched various tins of Tennants at Rovers fans before making their way down the hill to Starks Bar, all very unusual.

Raith Under 5s flag.

Never understood why you would go to the trouble of dressing casual to avoid police protection, only to get a flag made up to let people know you are "casuals"

The only trouble I've seen in the flesh was when Hearts beat us in the 2013 LC SF at Easter Road.  A few of the respective young teams were having a 20 man scrap in the middle of the thousands traipsing out the stadium.  Was fairly funny to watch as it was pitch black too.

I haven’t seen any major bother at a game for years. Probably because most of the people doing it are now in there 50s. Although I’ve noticed a lot more youngsters are into it again.

Back in the ‘80s there were certain games you expected a bit of bother.

I try and keep things going with a style I like to call Sports Casual.

The Elgin City cup game a few years ago saw some fighting away from the ground. Back in the Highland League, Elgin v Caley used to see fighting and some of the young lads seem to have taken up this mantle. The game at BB has more police at it than any Caley game I’ve seen before, there were police dog handles around the pitch and a barrier between the two fans exiting. Ridiculous really.

Once saw a running battle between Jags and Airdrionians fans in about 2001 after a 2-1 defeat (Owen b*****ding Coyle with a late winner) going down Maryhill Road. There was a bit of a Section B revival that season with some scenes at Somerset on the last day after losing the title and their club.

Get it jolly well round them.

I could hear that it didn’t see it in person. I was walking next to Tesco and saw a load of police running towards the underpass. The grainy YouTube footage is a laugh.

A Albion Rovers v Thistle match is forever etched in my memory for a number of reasons not least that Thistle twice led by two goals but contrived to lose 5-4. Thanks Sandy Clark.

As you can imagine the trudge up to Coatdyke Station after that calamity was none too happy.

We get to within a couple of hundred yards of the station and we see these people frantically waving at us. Thinking they are kind fellow Thistle fans indicating that a train in just coming (yes, I know there is absolutely no logic to that thinking but we had just lost 5-4. To Albion Rovers) we stat sprinting towards the station.

Only when we got within close range to do we discover that it's not Thistle fans urging us to catch the train but Section B down from Airdrie for some pavement dancing in Coatbridge and we had led a charge towards them.

Anyway, about a dozen of us did about 100 Section B. All of us scarvers too. 🙂

I actually can't remember what happened at the station. Certainly no punches were thrown as best as I can recall. Maybe some police intervention.
