DiegoDiego
Not sold on that. It’s to Putin’s advantage to inhibit Nordstream, to prevent any opponents from having an easy out should they oust him. Location suggests Russian “attack”, as getting U.S. assets into the area undiscovered would be extremely difficult. Certainly the Danish and Swedes would be aware of U.S. activity in the area due to the impossibility of submerged transit through the Skaggerak and the radar coverage in the air/surface.Putin could inhibit Nordstream quite easily by simply not pumping anything through it. No need to put a hole in it.There's the possibility that the pipeline was attacked simply to send a message saying critical infrastructure is now a legitimate target.

Surely any assault on critical infrastructure belonging to any NATO country would be getting right close to a declaration of war?

It didn't look like Russia intended to supply any gas through Nord 1 at least till after the winter anyway, so no big loss to them. Except it takes the wind out of the sails of populist demonstrations in Central Europe to have governments negotiate with Vlad to get it flowing again... ...the first bit of this tweet is the main reason Russia can't be discounted.
welshbairn
Germany saying that, unless the pipeline is repaired quickly, internal salt water corrosion could render the pipeline useless and unrepairable. Also that one of Nord 2's pipes is undamaged so could be used if Germany changes it's mind on authorising it. welshbairn
I did wonder if Gazprom could be penalised for continuing to withhold contracted supply of gas through Nord 1, another potential motive..
Dev
It's a fast moving situation where Russia might be the wrong-doer (I don't know) but if the West is looking for a "Russian-style" Big Lie" in order to take unprecedented military action whilst retaining a relatively positive image for PR reasons then this could be it. It would be ironic if the Russian Government wasn't fibbing about this but received the blame for it - especially as the regime appears to live by lies and deceit.

welshbairn
Qatar are currently negotiating a 10-20 year fixed price LNG supply deal with Germany, blowing up Nord 1 has certainly come at a convenient time for them, not that I'm alleging they hired some mercanaries with North Sea diving experience or anything. Detournement
Being a keyboard warrior in reaction to a video of men being mobilised is next level pathetic. Edin must have some really important emailing to do which is preventing him from joining the Foreign Legion.

TAJ
I thought I'd read that there was NATO & USA naval war exercises taking place only 20/30 kilometres away from there. Surely if it was Russia then they would have picked something up on radar. Did Biden not say that he would stop NS1 from operating?
