Tonsilitis
Scott McLaughlin is a left sided midfielder. He had a few seasons with Morton from 2004 to 2008, having been on loan initially from Livingston and then signed. He left to go to Airdrie and thence to Ayr. I always thought he was a workmanlike player with a fair bit of dig about him but he was a bit lightweight and had a higher opinion of himself than his ability merited. He used to regularly grab the ball for free kicks from distance but would then seldom got closer than 10 yards off the target. His passing and decision making were not great. On the plus side, he never hides in a game and will give 100%. Eventually, he was one of those players that becomes a target for the home support no matter how he is playing and it is fair to say his relationship with Morton fans towards the end of his time here was strained to say the least. I thought a lot of the criticism was a bit unjustified and we had worse in the team at the time. I think bottom half of the first division is about his level and the term first division journeyman springs to mind as being appropriate!
Hampden Diehard
Any idea what the team was and who scored the other goal? Smith scored them both.
toms
Scott Mclauchlin signs a one year deal with Queens I liked Scott. He should do well for you. He became a hate figure when he was here and I have no idea why. Seemed to do well at Airdrie and Ayr.

A-Mac
He played there second half against Gretna after some substitutions Being a left sided player, maybe Gus sees him as a versatile squad player? Some who can shift about on the pitch. Edited July 8, 2011 by a_mac
The Magic Moose
As I said on the squad thread, it's a slightly surprising signing. Why? We need someone to cover the 10+ games McKenna will miss through suspension!
Skyline Drifter
Why? We need someone to cover the 10+ games McKenna will miss through suspension! That's what we have 19's and former 19's for. I just think in what will inevitably be a limited squad size I'm surprised he's opted for three senior central midfielders, particularly when the best of last year's 19's (in terms of first team experience at least) also plays there. Tonsilitis' suggestion that he can play left sided maybe answers it though. He was playing through the middle on Tuesday night.

He did play out on the left for a while first half, because Johnston had drifted inside. If he is also a genuine backup at left back then he does fit in with what Gus said the other night about signing players who could play in multiple (ie not just two) positions. In a putting two and two together and coming up with a random number kind of way, given that Gus said on Wednesday night that he was waiting for McGuffie (although he did say he had to decide soon) it would seem a bit soon for him to have given up waiting. Unless of course McGuffie has said no, but then that would make McLaughlins signing pretty quick. If McGuffie does sign then that doesnt leave many spaces in the squad left. We need another striker, for sure, and a keeper.
Demented Zebra
It's funny reading about your top heavy midfield. When Gus was with us we were always saying at the beginning of the season - Why are we signing so many midfiled players. From the outside looking in there is a familiar shape taking place. Gus seems to think games can be won or lost in midfield. He will have you organized and extremely hard to beat. But 7 years of the same shit became too much for much of our support.
MB
As far as I can gather from McLaughlin's career thus far, his best position is in a central holding role although he can play further forward. He also played on the left side of midfield quite often for Morton I think, and can cover at left back as well. Apart from the two obvious positions to fill - goalkeeper and striker - we need another defender (McGuffie?) and a pacey winger. If we sign McGuffie, McCusker and Weatherston along with a keeper we're pretty much there. However, I would be concerned that we do not have a recognised left back, with both Higgins and McLaughlin better in other positions. I'm sure one of Reid or McGuffie could also play there but I would prefer a 'specialist' left back. Edited July 8, 2011 by MB
#Gary
I don't remember McLaughlin ever playing on the left of midfield for us in all honesty. I remember him filling in at left back a few times but he was honking. He was alright in the centre of midfield, but has a high opinion of himself and thinks of himself as some sort of set piece master when he's actually quite shit at them. There was an incident involving McLaughlin and a female fan (nothing major) I believe which resulted in a few exchanges between him and some fans, then the minute he left the club he had left comments on Jamie Stevenson's bebo or something about how we were all terrible fans etc ...
MB
I don't remember McLaughlin ever playing on the left of midfield for us in all honesty. Perhaps I'm getting confused with his time at Airdrie. I guess he lacks the necessary pace to play on the left side of midfield. It seems that in McLaughlin, McKenna and Simmons we have three quite similar players.

It seems that in McLaughlin, McKenna and Simmons we have three quite similar players. I don't think they are all that similar in so far as they bring different things to the table. I'm a better passer than McKenna but he's a superb "governer" in front of the back line and can cover centre half and offer a bit of height too. He will barely cross the halfway line or pass forwards though. Simmons fancies himself as a wee bit more creative and may score the odd goal. Bit of height too but nowhere near as good in the air as McKenna. McLaughlin appears more box to box than either of the other two but probably not a great tackler. However, they do seem predominantly to all be central midfielders and competing for two spots (since MacPherson has already said he expects to line up 4-4-2 with us). Either that or one of them is going to play elsewhere.

MarreZ
Three attacking midfielders? When on earth did that happen Anyway, as I've already said about Brighton, he hasn't done a pre-season for two years which was probably why he was pretty poor. Get him fit, keep him fit and he'll do a great job for you. Brighton could yet still be great and go on and do big things, I really hope the guy can get a break and do well with Queens this season. Im predicting a great season for you guys this year, Gus knows his stuff and getting Millen too is a great bonus, they work well as a team, Im sure he will want to prove to everyone he should be in the SPL, whether its with QOTS or someone else.
Truthhurts
Well I have seen enough of these players to feel confident that we most certainly will not get relegated. Also, it looks like we have a bigger pool of players lined up for this season, maybe that is why Gus is doubling up on certain positions??? I'm not sure about Brighton mind.

Tonsilitis
He is predominately left-footed. Lets call him a left footed midfielder!
