The Queen of the South thread

Exactly - you can't base the decision on how he was playing 5 years ago (or even 2 years ago which is the last time most of our fans will have seen him doing anything of any note) and you can't base it on Brown's decision. But we can't just assume Brown has made the wrong decision, the manager needs to see him playing.

I don't know if he will be any good or not, but I 'm not assuming he is just because he used to be. And we can take what Dundee fans say about him with a pinch of salt after the experience of St Mirren fans telling us that Gus would have the team super fit, well organised and difficult to beat.

Has Rab Douglas got shit all of a sudden? He has consistently been one of the best keepers in the first for years, and by all accounts wasn't doing to badly last year. I'd imagine he walk into most teams in the first division.

Guaranteed clean sheet on the opening day for Queens if you sign Rab. Followed by a ten match suspension as he gives John Brown a beat down in the dug out at full time.

Would take the ten match suspension just to see that!

Flash is quite correct . At Douglas's age , players can get very 'old 'and very quickly , having looked capable recently. I have always been impressed with the big fella and he has played some great games against Queens. Maybe a short term deal would be for the best and see how it goes

I've nothing at all against Rab Douglas, he has been a very accomplished keeper but at 41 yrs old his playing career is closing out. He would be great to have around the place in a coaching capacity as I have always argued that you need a goalkeeper coach. Specialist position requires specialist coaching. In a playing sense though we should be looking at someone younger. Grant Adam does not convince me. He is young, and I'm sure he will do well through time. I don't think though he is the keeper for us at this time.

Despite being our best player through the first half of the season, Rab had quite a major dip in form in January/February which led to many fans suggesting he was 'past it'. It's the natural thing to do when a player that is deemed older starts putting in a few poor performances, but I'd suggest it was just a dip in form due to the rigorous nature of the season we had.

When Brown came in, Rab put in 2 motm performances in his first 3 games but also flogged a goal against United. In 2 of these games, the 2 in which he was motm, he was injured and couldn't kick the ball with his right foot. Kicking has always been his weak point and Harkins quipped that it was no real disadvantage as he could throw a ball just as well as he could kick. (His throwing ability is exceptional).

Brown then brought in Simonsen behind Rab's back, allegedly a 'fire drill' was used so that we could give Simonsen a medical although it's never been confirmed. Rab then confronted Brown about the underhanded nature of it all which led to Brown telling Rab to, 'f**k off and pack yer bags'.

Despite well known journalists that post on here like WendyWho? and Scot Gardiner saying it was an issue out of nothing, the matter was never resolved with allegations of Brown's attitude and Rab recording the falling out being suggested.

Once Rab was confirmed to be leaving, it was decided he'd wave farewell to the fans at half-time but John Brown decided he'd try and sour the occasion by appointing Simonsen, Rab's replacement as captain for the day. Sour end to our easily most dominant keeper we've had since the 80's at least and despite being 41, I'm sure he'll be raring to go for the new season.

A better keeper than Robinson in my view, but I suppose time will tell as he is 41 after all.

Maybe I missed something, but are the club changing the badge again for the forthcoming season? I note the club emblem stencilled onto the new pitch - and on the latest fixture cards - is of a different design from the one used in the previous few seasons.

I never really took to the one used from about 2007(?) to the present, so if that's the case then it's a good change imo.

Yeah because we are queen of the south the only team ever to win the 2nd division so of course we should be looking to bring in a world class keeper! I wonder if we'll make a bid for victor values?

You don't sound too sure !!!! Thought JM only had budget left for a Keeper and Striker???? Plenty possibles getting mentions, smaller wages,Bigger Squad, Bigger Wages, smaller squad !!! that's the conundrum now how to manage it.

So from the rumours gathered on this thread we have been looking at Rab Douglas, Grant Adam, Joe Cardle and Sean Higgins. Having seen 3 of the 4 play (to my knowledge) I am pleased with who we are looking at to get in.

Upwards and onwards.

Also just incase no-one has seen the new picture of the strips for this season, here it is

Turnbull Hutton, at our home top launch at Starks on Saturday, said Cardle was away on trial at Leyton Orient and was never offered a trial/training option at any other Scottish club (minus ourselves) or in Iceland.

No, I don't imagine he has got shit all of a sudden. But he has gradually got older. All I'm saying is you can't say for sure that he is a great signing when the last meaningful contribution most of us saw him making in a match was more than 2 years ago. At his age, that is a long time.

His agility and reactions may have worsened in that time. Or they may not. But I really don't see what is controversial about saying it is better to have a look at him before signing him rather than just assume he is as good as he was the last time he had to do anything in a game at Palmerston.

Yes, if he is leaving Dundee due to falling out with the manager, that puts a slightly different slant on things. But it still doesn't mean we can all say for definite that he is as good as he was two years ago. It might even be the case that Dundee fans seeing him play for the first time this season in friendlies would change their opinion from before. Sometimes players go on for one season too many. And I don't want Palmerston becoming a rest home for the elderly and infirm like it has been previously.
