An enormous sensation in the Dutch Cup. Part-timers SV Spakenburg, who are 7th in tier 3, already beat (then) bottom eredivisie side FC Groningen away 3-2. Tonight they played the quarter final away against FC Utrecht. FC Utrecht are 7th in the eredivisie. In recent weeks they drew against league leaders Feyenoord and challengers PSV, while knocking AZ out of the cup in the previous round. Utrecht fielded a full-strength side. Final score tonight: FC Utrecht 1-4 Spakenburg! 😲

This means they are in the semi-finals. The traditional "big 3" are all still in and avoided each other in the draw, so it's very well possible that the 4 semi finalists will be Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV and Spakenburg.

So just how much of an upset was that? Are Spakenburg the Dutch equivalent of Gretna or are they a "genuine" amateur side? On the face of it that's a mad result.

Well, they're not fully amateur, they're basically part-time. But they aren't heavily bankrolled at all, they are just funded by small local sponsors and fans. So they are by no means a Gretna and nobody is expecting them to just climb the leagues.

So yes, it's a mad result. To beat a top flight side in itself is big already, to do it away is even harder and quite rare. But to do it away twice in the same season and have such a scoreline against the 7th placed side is really mad.

Nice bit of trivia btw, they are the 3rd non-league club to ever reach the semi-finals since the introduction of professional football in The Netherlands in 1954. The other 2 were VVSB & IJsselmeervogels. The latter are Spakenburg's arch rivals. The grounds of the 2 clubs are closer to each other than Dens Park & Tannnadice are, as can be seen in the photo below (Spakenburg on the left, IJsselmeervogels on the right).

PSV 3-1 ADO Den Haag
De Graafschap 0-3 Ajax

PSV and Ajax both put in professional performances against 2nd tier opposition. That means that the semi-finalists will be the complete "big 3" and Spakenburg. The last time that all of Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV made the semi finals was in 2005.

That's grim.

Freak scoreline. Yes, it was top against (nearly) bottom, but large score lines are rare in this league.

Den Bosch had to play a different goalkeeper as their first one is injured. Save to say I can't see him remain at this level for long...

Feyenoord suddenly got quite close to the title. They were 3 points ahead of Ajax but won 2-1 away against them in "The Classic" the week before the international break. This weekend Ajax dropped points again: 0-0 away against Go Ahead Eagles, while Feyenoord won their derby away against Sparta 3-1. AZ drew 1-1 at home to Heerenveen and PSV beat NEC 3-0. That means that Feyenoord are now 8 points ahead of both Ajax and PSV and 10 ahead of AZ with 7 games to go. Ajax, PSV and AZ seem to have to fight for 2nd (CL qualifying) & 3rd.

Feyenoord win again, this time 3-1 at home v Utrecht, while PSV won 3-0 at home against Ajax. As a result, Feyenoord are still 8 points ahead of PSV and now 11 points ahead of Feyenoord with 4 games to go. If Feyenoord win next week and PSV drop points v Sparta, Feyenoord could win the league in 2 weeks time away against Excelsior. Although the last time they thought they'd win the league on our patch, we gubbed them 3-0. :D

Ajax meanwhile are going through (for their standards) a poor season. For the first time since the 2005/06 season they lost all league matches against both Feyenoord and PSV. If PSV do beat them to second, it would be the first time since 2008/09 they failed to finish in the top 2 of the league (back then AZ were champions and Twente runners-up).

This is maybe not the easiest question to answer, but is there a certain type of person that follows Excelsior rather than Feyenoord or Sparta? I guess location wise, south of the river is Feyenoord, west is Sparta and east is Excelsior, but would that have much bearing on who people decide to support?

It's largely down the the location. My family are from Kralingen, the part of the city Excelsior are from. My grandmother went to Excelsior as a girl back in the 1920's. Most Excelsior-fans I know are either from Kralingen, nearby suburbs in Rotterdam-East, or towns just outside Rotterdam to the east of the city. Sparta is similar for the west of the city, towns just outside to the west and with a decent support to the north too. Feyenoord is everything south of the river, both inside Rotterdam and the wider region. Obviously being one of the traditional "big 3" in the country, they do have supporters from further afield, but they draw a considerably larger proportion of their fans from their region compared to Ajax and to a lesser extend PSV.

Excelsior Rotterdam are definitely safe! 🍻🎉

We beat Fortuna Sittard 3-0 today, while Feyenoord didn't relax after winning the title last week and won 1-3 at Emmen. Now we're 4 points ahead with one game left. This means that Emmen will play promotion/relegation play-offs. Cambuur and Groningen already got relegated last week.

At the other end of the table, Feyenoord won the title last week. PSV failed to secure second place (which means CL qualifiers), they came back to draw 3-3 at home against Heerenveen after being 1-3 down. They are 3 points ahead of Ajax, who beat Utrecht 3-1. AZ remain 2 points behind Ajax after beating NEC away 0-3.

Next week 2nd and 3rd will be decided in 2 big games: AZ v PSV and Twente v Ajax. If AZ win, Ajax would be second with a win, third (EL play-offs) with a draw and fourth (ECL qualifiers) with a loss. So that's going to be very interesting.

Any idea what the deal with promotion from Tweede divisie is? Best I can make out is the champions can go up if they want to but up until this year they have the choice to do so or not?

There is no promotion, no clubs can/want to fulfil the (excessive) requirements for promotion. It's effectively a closed system, promotion is only possible in theory.
