How To Claim Asylum In The Uk

By way of offering support to many on here and the Home Secretary, is anyone able to provide a comprehensive step by step guide to legally claiming asylum in the UK.

Arseholes should note "claim asylum in France" is not a satisfactory response.

There isn't one. They don't want one. This is insular UK. The drawbridge is up and we are now overtly racist. Joseph Heller gets it right again. Catch 22 -

A situation in which someone is in need of something that can only be had by not being in need of it.

A friend was married to a Syrian and when she approached immigration lawyers she was basically told there was zero chance he'd be granted entry to country.

They'd met in UAE, both worked and had significant savings.

We're a racist wee island.

This is the official line.

When your claim might not be considered

Your claim might not be considered if you:

  • are from an EU country
  • travelled to the UK through a ‘safe third country’
  • have a connection to a safe third country where you could claim asylum

Generally, a safe third country is one that:

  • you’re not a citizen of
  • you would not be harmed in
  • would not send you on to another country where you would be harmed

The Government makes it very difficult for people to enter the United Kingdom (UK) to claim asylum. This is especially so after the Government introduced a law called the Nationality and Borders Act 2022.

If you are in danger in your country of origin or residence, and you want the UK to grant you international protection, you can claim asylum when you are in the UK.

However, it is not possible to claim asylum from outside the UK, and there is no visa which allows people to enter the UK in order to claim asylum. This means that most people have no choice but to enter the UK without permission. People may come hidden in vehicles, on boats, or by aeroplane using a false passport.

Thanks for both of your posts. Essentially, for the small boats people, the official answer is "France" (or similar). Because there doesn't seem to be a way to travel to the UK for the purposes of seeking asylum. You'd need to come in directly from an unsafe country and to do so, you'd probably need a visa and you'd probably need to lie about the purpose of your visit.

The sort of people who might reasonably claim asylum whilst in the UK are probably people who have come in on legitimate visas (students?) who might subsequently claim that a return to their own country would be unsafe - perhaps because they were in a same sex relationship and were from the Middle East.

That's a tiny number though in comparison to the numbers fleeing persecution.

The UK really is saying "f**k you" to every other safe country on grounds of geography. I'm surprised the French aren't just chartering ferries as a "f**k you" back.

The geography issue is an interesting one. Purely by the luck of being an island at the extreme west side of Europe, the UK is never going to be the first port of call for most people trying to claim asylum. If, however, the UK was situated such that asylum seekers did arrive here first, I wonder how the UK govt would respond if the asylum seekers tried to leave the country to seek asylum elsewhere. Would the govt try to prevent them leaving, in much the same way the UK would like France to stop people coming here, or would they be happy to just let them go?

You don't wonder at all - you know full well  :P

They're a band of hypocritical arseholes who are using geography to pretend to hold a reasonable position. If Iceland suddenly started sinking and the EU refused to help us with 300,000 soggy Vikings, we'd be screaming blue murder about the unfairness of it all.

Let’s see…300,000 soggy Vikings, at least half of whom are soggy ladies…that’s 150,000, at least 20% aged 18-35…that’s 30,000 soggy potential Miss Icelands…checking for pictures of the Miss Iceland competitors…screaming somewhat muted, aye!

One of the most depressing parts of the invasion of Ukraine has been the number of online adverts implying that there are hordes of desperate Ukrainian women who'll bang you in exchange for a place to live.

I'm not the only one getting them, right?  :shutup

That’s not just you. Yea, the scammers go to wherever the attention is. Of course, my ads are a bit more circumspect, they want to “meet you”…
