The Senate filibuster. If they’re stupid enough, they win, change the rules and drop it completely. With 2026 being an election with roughly twice as many Republican as Democratic seats up for choice, they would be risking losing all control if they slip-up. Trump would be reduced to executive orders to do stuff. Also, with 90% of economists predicting a Trump win and implementation of his policies causing renewed inflation, 2026 and 2028 (another slight more R’s than D’s election) could be ugly for R’s.

On a related note, there’s little indication the attempt is moving the dial on Trump’s popularity or chances. There is a small concern circulating in R circles that this event might hurt his chances, as the more religious types may see it as a sign Trump will win anyway, and might be less likely to vote.

Unless I misheard TX, on this evening's BBC News Sarah Smith was alluding to Trump's recent streak of good fortune and very much suggesting that his second Presidency is increasingly looking like a slam dunk.

Meantime another few days have passed and the Dems remain saddled with a Mr Magoo tribute act.

Vance named Vance as his running mate. The guy who blamed Biden for the attempted assasination of Trump.

And Trump says let the country unite? Some chance with him!

Vance named himself as his own running mate?

Sounds like something Dwight Schrute would come up with.

I remember from Primary School that God communicated by setting light to bushes, it's not surprising he would take a dislike for fire fighters. Trump's orange face probably saved him.

Ah, that must be it. It'll be these d@mned "mysterious ways" again.

The above is exactly where Biden's strength lies. It's actually why Biden was initially selected as Obama's vice-president. To shore up these mostly white, mostly male, rust belt votes. Biden could yet be replaced, of course.

I don't think Trump being shot will alter things to the extent some have predicted. Especially since indications are the culprit wasn't politically motivated. This selection of Vance could prove more pivotal.

I've never heard of Vance before now, so just had a look at his Wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._D._Vance

He seems to have had a rough childhood:

Quote

Vance was born on August 2, 1984, in Middletown, Ohio, to Donald Bowman (1959–2023) and Beverly (née Vance). They were a family of Scots-Irish descent.[14][15] Vance's mother and father divorced when Vance was a toddler. Shortly afterward, he was adopted by his mother's third husband.[16]

Their childhood marked by poverty and abuse, and his mother being a drug addict,[17] Vance and his sister Lindsey were raised primarily by his grandparents, James and Bonnie (née Blanton) Vance, whom they called "Mamaw and Papaw."[14][18][19][20] J. D. later went by the name James Hamel, his stepfather's surname, until adopting his grandparents' surname, Vance.[21

Yet has done well for himself:

Quote

Born in Middletown, Ohio, Vance served in the Marine Corps before studying political science and philosophy at Ohio State University and earning a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School.[4] He came to prominence with his 2016 memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, which describes his upbringing in Middletown and his family's Appalachian values[clarification needed]. It became a New York Times bestseller and later a film, and attracted significant press attention during the 2016 United States presidential election.[5]

He's a surprising choice for Trump:

Quote

Vance was originally a critic of Trump, writing a critical piece about him in 2016 in The Atlantic and referring to Trump in private correspondence as "America's Hitler."[6][7][8] Vance later became a supporter of Trump during his presidency.[9] Vance launched his first political campaign in 2021 to represent Ohio in the U.S. Senate. He won the Republican nomination with Trump's support and running against Democratic nominee Tim Ryan in the general election.
