This bit about the monkey torture forum has a familiar ring to it.

Ape’s Cage contained about 400 people. The cast of characters was a mixture of the strange and — even stranger — the seemingly normal, all known to one another by their screen names. There was the Torture King, who had invited Kapetanich in; there was “Sadistic”, a gas station attendant and grandmother in rural Alabama; there was “Bones”, a former US Air Force airman from Texas with a big collection of guns; and “Champei”, who caused chaos and infighting in every group he joined. There was “Trevor”, who couldn’t contribute during daytime hours because, “no phone at work, nuclear stuff”.

Weird that this came up - there's a "mysteries of the internet" type channel that keeps popping up on my YouTube suggestions, posting videos about strange stuff that happens online (YouTubers who mysteriously disappeared, websites that look like spook psyops, that kind of thing), and they had an episode about how YouTube videos about monkeys are attracting loads of really vile comments wishing explicit harm on the monkeys. They were confused about whether it's some kind of meme and people are just kidding around, but I guess it's not; there's just a worryingly large group of psychos who genuinely hate monkeys and love to see them tortured and/or killed.

That's the internet for you - just as you think you've heard about every appalling thing it has to offer, some other group of nogoodniks will say, "hold my beer".

It's long established that sadistic murderers often start by torturing small animals. It's practically guaranteed with serial killers (@mathematics, get your missus in here).

It always feels weird when people point that out though, as if it would be more acceptable to rip the heid off to kittens being stomped on by women in high heels, or to enjoy boiling monkeys alive in the same way that other people might like shooting Nazis in a video game, so long as they don't switch to babies or your granny.

She gets upset about animal cruelty, like many vegetarians, and would rather watch videos of human genocide over one of a hen battery.

Maybe suggest a drama series from time to time?

Another one published this month. Again a Chinese perpetrator. This time the man was tricking children in Malawi into repeating anti-Black racist phrases about themselves in Chinese. He was then selling the videos online.

It’s frightening that people like him actually exist.
