Sometime in the Nineties - I remember it suddenly being everywhere as Caribbean cuisine became fashionable for a while. You're right; it's fucking horrible. Sweet potato fries and mash has become popular for some reason. I'd rather have normal fries or mash. There are very few food items that I will not eat, but sweet potato is one of them.
