Mach-Hommy's #RICHAXXHAITAN is a belter and contains the only reference i can remember hearing on a pop record to the World Bank. Kudos.

Angelo Moore- Dr Maddvibe and the Missin Links is pretty decent although it's a bit full on and benefits from small doses.

The Felice Brothers -Valley of Abandoned Songs is great, if not quite as immediate as Undress or From Dreams To Dust, which is probably my favourite non Lee Bains Record of the last decade.

Very much a two in the morning whisky record.

The new Jake Xerxes Fussell will definitely be up there as one of the best, if not the best, of the year. Outstanding.

Sounds a lot to my ear like Bill Callahan/Smog.  Which is a good thing.

I’m prepared to die on the hill that Don Giovanni records produces more bang for its buck than any other.

Mourning (A) BLkstar’s new one Ancient/Futureis a mix of hip hop, punk, gospel and 2Tone.   It’s brilliant and never less than challenging.   RIYL Algiers, the Delphonics, Morcheeba and/or Lee Bains.

Good Looks are excellent.  Not sure a UK tour is ever likely, but they’d be a big hit in Glasgow if they did.

As it stands, brat is probably my album of the year so far.

I've also been enjoying Clairo's 'Charm' and if it counts in the album conversation the Challengers Original Score by Trent Rezor and Atticus Ross has been on repeat for me.

Listened to Good Looks based on the stuff I liked from the rest of your list and @Savage Henry bigging them up afterwards - great album. Cheers.

For me, it’s:

1.  Felice Brothers - Valley of Abandoned Songs

2.  Good Looks - Lived Here For A While

3.  Jake Xerxes Fussell - When I’m Gone

4. The Frenchmen - Sorry We Ruined Your Party

5.  Goodnight House - Rupture/Repair

6. Mourning (A) Blackstar - Ancient/Future

7. Goat Girl - Below The Waste

8. Royal Headache - Live In America

looking at it that way, there’s lots this year I really like.  Very strong year. And I didn’t get to SxSW last year which usually reduces my listening sphere a lot.

The Frenchmen are a San Francisco band doing that slightly twee indie pop thing that can only really come from SF or Glasgow.   Goodnight House is unashamedly low-fi indie straight out of 2003.  RIYL Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain.  Mourning (A) Blackstar were recommended to me by Lee Bains of Lee Bains + the Glory Fires fame, and they are a mix of soul, gospel, trip-hop and 2Tone.   Recommended if you like your politics left wing and your music heavy.

I really like the new stuff from Fontaines DC.  The singer even tries to hold a note in what is their “poppiest” album to date.   Judging by their performance at Reading/Leeds on the iPlayer, though, they’ve been enjoying the excesses of fame.

New album has tracks that are recognisable as songs on it. I think that’s a good thing on balance.

Enjoyed the Reading clip but haven’t actually seen them before so have nothing to compare with. They not usually that rough around the edges? (Visually I mean, the playing was pretty tight)
