Aye agree with this, the team needed revamping and we didn't exactly have a set of great players around that time to choose from. It was always gonna be a tough gig for anyone.

Looking back at his compretive games, he did better than I remember, draw against Germany, beat the Dutch. Some shockers there also, drawing with Faroes, losing to Moldova etc. The friendlies record was shocking though, perhaps due to the crazy capping policy going on at the time.

Sir or Madam, you traduce a proud legacy.  It was a draw against Moldova.

The Slovenia game should be mandatory viewing for SC.

The shape ( 4:4:2) the tactics ( close down everything,  clear your lines then support front 2 when on ).

Be brave when you get the ball, go forward as much as possible,  not fanny about until the other team regain possession.

Press and tackle as if your life depended on it. Appreciate their  front two would walk into our team, surely we can muster something,  anything that would at least ask questions of opposition defenders.  Cigars out big time in first and last games and for long spells v Swiss.

Their fans never stopped cheering them on, unlike the mogadon malaise we suffered in last game.

Also the population of Slovenia is just over 2 million , so another excuse busted.

Never believed that Clarke would be sacked, and thought it pretty unlikely that he'd walk.  I guess the latter still seems possible, but definitely unlikely, and the SFA coming out and saying he can stay has a depressing familiarity to it.

At this stage, if we're really intent on him sticking around for the time-being, I think the Nations League should be treated as the chance for Clarke to show he has what it takes to change.  These are the sort of teams that he's talked about in the past that he wants to test against, and I think the draw is largely as good as it could be.  Portugal should top the group, but there's a chance we could take something from them.  Poland and Croatia are on their own dips, and the matches could go either way.  If Clarke goes out and ends up more flexible and shows he's learned something from two tournaments now, then he probably deserves a shot at qualifying for the World Cup.  If we stick to the same system and get pumped, then he should go.  But I know that SFA are probably just wanting to let him see out his contract so they don't need to pay out for the sacking, so I suspect, as others have said, this gets parked until either the autumn of 2025 (when we fail to finish 2nd in our qualifying group), the spring of 2026 (when we fail to get through the playoffs) or the summer of 2026 (when we either go out of the World Cup in embarrassing fashion again, or, maybe, actually do some good and he leaves of his own accord)

The Slovenia team that took Portugal to penalties was full of Serie B players

Hmm, nah. There was one Serie B player in the team against Portugal and another in the squad.

So you can add the remainder of your 'full of' total (3) to playing in Serie A.

That NL is the perfect opportunity to bounce back. It could easily have been a group at the Euros. Good performances there and maybe there's reason to think we can go on and actually compete at this kind of level. If we stink out that group as badly as we stunk out the Euros, it's a decent sign we've hit our limit under Clarke.

Who are our wingers and strike partnership in a 442?

Pretty sure he played 4-4-2 as Killie manager when they played the OF, worked well for him then. I might be wrong here but think he also played 4-4-2 when we played Belgium back in 2019? With the same idea as how he stifled the OF with Killie. We lost that game 4-0 so maybe he decided it wouldn't work internationally; though you'd hope that's not the case seeing as our defence that day was Robertson, Cooper, Mulgrew, and O'Donnell.

Aye we don't seem to have the quality there to play 4-4-2 to be honest.

He's bombed out Fraser so Doak, Morgan, Forrest, Armstrong, Christie are your current options. Other than Doak, a lot of them are not particularly pacey players then you would have to omit one of our central midfielders where we have the most quality in.

Said this pre-tournament but we are absolutely crying out for a winger in this team, a ball carrier, someone that is not frightened to dribble at the opposition and create a bit of a magic.

Was just thinking that - OF and the rest too. In fact, when he took the Scotland job, I'm pretty sure there was a strong feeling that "he's a back 4 manager, no way he'll go to a 3 to fix the Tierney/Robertson problem".

Yet he adopted and embraced that change, so it's unfair to say he's completely inflexible. Perhaps criticism of his reluctance to change from the current system (and it's variations) is fair tho.

Maradona, van Basten, Giggs, Matthaus, Deschamps all managed their national team.
We should go down the route of appointing one our famous sons as Scotland manager.

What's Kevin Gallacher up to?

Kenny Miller it is then

What credentials should the New Saviour have?

1) Someone with experience of international tournaments and CL

2) Someone with a track record of doing reasonably well with limited playing talent

3) A deep tactical thinker (and someone who can string a coherent sentence together)

4) Someone with a connection to Scotland, even a tenuous one

5) Someone who doesn’t talk shite after losing a match

6) Someone doing ok with his present club, but a club known for firing tons of managers, freeing him up should Safety Steve jack it in after the NL qualies.

Who might that be, then?

The tease was Ange P. 7/7.

Derision welcome, but only if you have a better feasible candidate

Bump

Just out of interest forum favourite and former Zambia, Ivory Coast, Morocco and Saudi Arabia manager Hervé Renard is currently unemployed.

He's got one hell of a pedigree as an international manager.

I’ve always felt David Moyes is the next man up, but he’s linked with a return to Everton. So I’d be looking at a foreign coach with experience in the international game. Tough to look past your man Renard.

Russell Martin is probably going to be free soon. He has a positive style and is more affordable than Moyes.

I would prefer a foreign coach but it is unlikely that the SFA would be brave enough to go for someone that might upset the applecart.

There is zero chance that the gimps in charge at the SFA would do anything remotely outside the box whenever the time comes. It will be whatever Scottish manager (or potentially British if they have some sort of Scotland link) is available.

At the moment we're expecting a manager to turn coal into diamonds.

As a Chemical Engineer who studied Industrial Chemistry, there is an established process to convert graphite into diamond.

Synthetic diamonds have been used in industry since, at least, the 1970s.

Unfortunately, that industrial process involves pressure, something that, recently, Steve Clarke has shown, cannot handle.

This fact manifested in his recent petulant pressers and post match interviews.

None of those names are too inspiring really, Moyes has the most experience and has managed at the highest level of anyone we could realistically afford. Has managed teams where he has got the best out of his resources so think he would be an ideal fit but the fitba on show would be rather dull but as long as he would get results then I wouldn't give a f**k.

Hiring outwith the Scottish football landscape, there's obviously a bit more risk to that but would be open to any coach that knows what the f**k they are doing to build a winning team at this level.
