btb
I note Sam Tarry who was sacked from the Shadow Cabinet after attending an RMT picket line in July has been deselected as Labour candidate for Ilford South.

CambieBud
There has been a purge of many on the left of the party down south. Sir Man of The People appears to want a party of yes men and lobby fodder. It makes me wonder who anyone with mild socialist views and principles can vote for down south. I know the polls show Labour miles in front in the polls but I suspect that this might work against them in practice. People who might have held their noses and voted may not bother if it seems it’s a shoe in. I would probably vote Labour if I lived down south but with little enthusiasm. I suspect many others feel the same Edited October 11, 2022 by CambieBud

It's a further endorsement of the view down south that to win a GE Labour must follow each lurch rightwards by the Tories with one of their own - can the current Starmer iteration of the party even be considered left-of-centre? Such a gamble with two years to go till the next GE (prob'ly), the right wing press will have those two years to print an agenda which blames our woes on EU intransigence over Brexit, Covid and the Ukraine War and mid-term poll leads can melt away.

I said this when he joined the picket line. He was doing that to get publicity as he knew he was facing deselection. He thought he could shore up enough support by getting sacked to ensure he kept his seat. Nothing to do with a rightward drift as @DeeTillEhDeh suggests. How he got selected in 2019 was all a bit underhanded and now this has been put right.

Jas Athwal, who won this battle, is the leader of the local Ilford council and was endorsed by the trade unions Unison, Usdaw and Community. He's not some right-wing stooge parachuted in to a safe seat as happened in the 90s with Shaun Woodward.

I find your interpretations bizarre and note that accusations of skullduggery go both ways in this battle. -
Benjamin_Nevis
Isn't Tarry in a relationship with Angela Rayner? That must make for some tricky chat

Aye agreed but knowingly going on a picket line against the leaders direction and then making up policy on the hoof for the cameras is begging to be sacked. Which is what he wanted. The skullduggery does indeed go both ways.

Agree about the parachuting bit, not so sure about the right wing stooge bit.

DeeTillEhDeh
In what way is he a right wing stooge?Possibly because Wes Streeting was heavily involved in getting his suspension for alleged sexual harassment lifted. He's also associated with Labour First, home of Luke Akehurst's right wing Blairite shitebags.
Detournement
Unison, USDAW and Community are right wing trade unions. This just seems like the local Asian powerbroker taking the seat that was probably promised to him when Mike Gapes stood down. Tarry like Rayner is a total chancer.

Don't know about you, but I'm also looking forward to spending a fair chunk of my retirement arguing the toss with people I don't like, and whose opinions I don't care about, on a forum for a sport that I've no real interest in. That's the dream.
