Sortmeout
I’ve noticed a lot of older cars around Ayrshire recently (Rovers, Fiestas, Saxo etc) which I’ve been reliably informed is due to car insurance on classics, with anything over 20 years old being listed as a classic, being a lot cheaper than modern cars. A lot of the cars I’ve started noticing are from the late 90s/early 2000s when I started to drive which has prompted this thread. What is your car history and what were your thoughts on the cars you have owned. I’m not really into cars too much so can’t provide more details on the type of car other than the basic points below and my own view of them. Mine is: 1994 reg Fiat Punto. Either a 1.1 or 1 litre engine I paid about £400 for this around 2004 when I passed my driving test. I loved my first car and I wouldn’t mind having a wee shot of one again today. The steering was heavy back then so god knows how it would feel now. Corsa B 1.2. Engine management issues eventually killed this one. Renault Clio 1.4. I bought this in 2002 and I thought it was ok but nothing special. Peugot 307. What a boring choice of a car. Comfortable to drive in a straight line, not so good when turning corners. Broke down on me at the slip road onto the M8 at the Hilton hotel in Glasgow City Centre at 4pm one day which was a fun experience. Astra 1.6. Got no idea of the model but it was an 08 reg. Loved this car and kept it for a long time. I then looked to replace it with a newer version of the astra in 2015 I think. I tried the standard and GTC astra of the new model and they were both horrible to drive. Golf 2.0 GTD. My first VW and I’ll never go back to anything else I don’t think. Amazing car. Passat 2.0 diesel. Had a baby and bought this bigger car. I really liked this car as well and for a big car the handling was class. Golf 2.0 GTI. Great to drive, fuel efficiency not so good. Not too sure why I’ve woken up as J Clarkson but there you go. Edited July 21 by Sortmeout
pozbaird
At 63 years of age, to go through my car history would be a long and boring story. The best car I’ve ever owned is my current one. A VW Polo R Line. Have had ‘fancier’ cars in the past, but I just can’t fault the Polo in any area. Does everything I need and does it well. Worst car I’ve had was the Mazda 3 I had immediately before the Polo. The build quality was unbelieveably disappointing. I’ve had Fiats in the past that had less rattles, squeaks, faults, bits of trim falling apart. In posting this, the only guarantee is that there will be folk on here who own Mazdas, swear by them, and have never had a problem. I had three Vauxhalls in a row back in the day, and had no issues with them either.
Melanius Mullarkey
Fairly boring from me. Not really a car buff. First one was a Rover 216 in racing green probably around 2003. Carburettor/engine overheated on route to REM at Balloch park and that was that. Silver VW Golf 1.6 bought from Auto Station in Lhanbryde shortly after. Great car, had it 6 months then a Lithuanian Professor totalled it in a head on collision near Drymen 2 days before Mrs Mullarkey and I were due to go to Cuba. Another Golf from Barnetts in Dundee. Quite possibly the worst car ever built. Everything went wrong, radiator, brakes fucked, even the horn had to be replaced at one point. Horrendous. Couldn’t get rid of it in the end. Drove up to Elgin and some boy gave me £250 for it. Got my old boys Punto at that point (2012) as he’d had a stroke which put paid to his driving. Solid enough, ran it into the ground over a few years then gave it to my nephew who only recently scrapped it. Then a series of dad lease cars (Kadjar, Tucson Qashqai). Growing up, my old boy always had a fair variety of cars (Chevette, Renault 6, Polo, Mini Metro) but my favourite was the Triumph Dolomite (3l) in the early 80s. First car with leather seats and a wee fold down arm rest in the back (what luxury).

As for my car list, I have had quite a few over the years and in the more recent years 2 cars at a time, probably missing some... Nova - 2 door saloon, or coupe as I would tell my mates. Fiesta Mini (OG) MG ZR - Usual head gasket problem. (Then kids come along) Mondeo Peugeot 307 Hilux - Company Car. BMW 530d - Looked like a dealer in this, black with tinted windows, excellent car. Impreza Turbo - Wish I kept this, probably worth a fortune. (Then dogs enter the chat) Laguna Estate - Broke down on the Haudagain roundabout as the gearbox decided to fall out. Focus Volvo V40 Estate - Had about 230k miles on it. Grand Espace - Absolutely massive and you could take all the seats out to use as a van. Hated it though. Grand Cherokee - Comfortable. Citroën C2 - French cars are fuckin shite, I will never buy another Citroën. Nissan Navara - Cost me a fortune to MOT, all the suspension was fucked. Golf GTD Lexus IS200 - Would easy have one of these again. Mondeo ST - Really sluggish for what it was. Peugeot 206 GTi (This ended up round a telegraph pole)... Audi A3 Astra - Mk5 utterly shite. Volvo XC60 - Needed a new engine 1 month out of warranty, that was painful. Astra - Company Car. Fiesta - 1.5 Diesel.Tax exempt due to low emissions, can't drive in the LEZ due to high emissions. Granny Danger
My first car was a 1967 Triumph Herald convertible with the registration EYJ 862 F. Not sure how I remember that. Long list of absolute bangers after that. Glad when after many years I could finally afford a decent car so I could go for a drive without worrying if the car would break down.
Ross.
Short list for me. I only bothered learning at 38. First up was a 2014 Polo 1.2. Best described as an ideal first car. Had to replace it about a year ago when the turbocharger went and it would have cost more to replace it than the car was worth at that point. Replaced by a 2020 Skoda Kamiq. Does what I need it to do but already bored with it. Lease runs for another 18 months. Will see where things stand at that point.

tam the bud
Been driving Toyota Avensis since 2006 to 2020 then a Toyota Corolla Touring. 7 in total and not 1 problem with any of them. Will likely change car next spring, so maybe i will break my habit and get something different, but likely i won't. Before then it was mostly Ford Fiesta or Escort with no real issue with them either.

Spyro
First car at 18 years old: P-reg 1.8 sport Nissan Premiera hand-me-down from the parents. 1st bought with my own money 1.3 N-reg Fiesta, no power steering that rotted Ugly af Hyundai Elentra that was £400 but refused to die for years Then I went through a mad, fast Fiesta phase with a few variations OF mk5 Zetec S's and mk6 ST's, all were good while they lasted but never financially recovered from their shiteness. Briefly owned an Impreza but got rid before I killed myself in it. Since then a couple of mgzr's, mazda 6's, an old Punto, another couple of Fiesta's that were all shite and died with a range of nothing issues (one I wrapped round a sturdy gate post) and eventually ended up with a wee Suzuki Swift that I hope lasts longer than my last few attempts! ADDITIONS: and a few Transit works-vans that were better than any of the cars I've ever owned Edited July 21 by Spyro
