Raith Rovers v Hamilton Academicals

Recommended Posts

Dąbrowski, McNeil

Dick, Freeman, Hanlon, Stevenson

Byrne, Easton, Matthews, Montagu, Mullin

Connolly, Gibson, Hamilton, Jamieson, Nicholson, Smith, Vaughan

Thats the entire 18 players we could have available, right now, for Saturday. 16 field players and 2 keepers. OK, let’s see what we have.

Defending:

2 LB, 1 RB, 1 CB to start with. Both LB can fill in at CB, but Dick is better suited to that role, while Stevenson is potentially capable of a DM role of a sort if not hammering down the wing at LWB. Freeman can theoretically play CB, but suffers a lack of height in that role. There was lots of talk we were trying for Megwa, which suggests several things, but the easiest one I see is that Freeman doesn’t seem to be a RWB. Could we start a back 3, perhaps, but it would be with a LB-CB-RB as the three, and not a decent as a back 4 with Dick deputised at CB.

Attackers:

At something akin to a CF role, we have Vaughan, Smith, Hamilton and Jamieson.  Vaughan we believe is back healthy and Hamilton is coming off an injury and played limited time last match. That leaves Smith, Vaughan and Jamieson as our clear starting options. Hamilton more likely to get late time to improve match readiness. So the question is 1 or 2 up top.

The Middle/Wingers:

Byrne and Matthews are capable of playing any midfield role, however both favour playing central or right. Mullin is technically the most versatile player, with any role in the middle of back having been played (yes, he’s even got a professional match at CB), but favours the right. Easton and Connolly are both nearly as versatile, but Easton favours the left while Connolly favours the right. Gibson is often being pressed by us into a defensive role he hasn’t really played before, but seems capable on either flank. Montagu and Nicholson are both middle of the field players so far as we’ve seen or been told, only Montagu really might be considered an option, as Jake is still learning the basics. The huge issue here is, as it has been for several years, we’re very much overbalanced to the right.

TL;DR We should probably look to a 4-4-2.

So then the next question is, since everyone says we need bodies, where do we need them:

GK, we need one more, although I do wonder if Thomson isn’t actually our undesignated depth.

RB/RWB, could use one, and if the rumour about Megwa was true, were looking for one.

CB, could use one more body for depth. Ideally a younger player to develop, but an older, experienced one would work as well.

DM, are we short here, or is it just recency bias?

LM/CM, wouldn’t hurt to add a left-sided player or two capable of winger or midfield roles.

AM, who wouldn’t want another Stanton, but where the hell do you find one.

CF,  meh. Unless a real scorer is available, and when are they ever, we’d do better getting our current crop on the boil.

5 or 6 more players wouldn’t go amiss.

That's the best matchday squad Raith have had in ages.

Hopefully it's a back 4 for two reasons 1, we've lost every game we've played a 3 at the back. 2, we have zero defenders on the bench so when one of them gets an injury or a red were going to have to dump Matthews in there.

Just f**king win this Rovers.

Feels like a 4-4-2, now we just hope it is.
