Petty Things That Get On Your Nerves...

Recommended Posts

What is people's obsession with getting the seats with a table on a train?

Just got on train that's empty.

4 of us get on carriage.

The mother and daughter grab a table.

The young guy on his own grabs a table.

I sit in a double seat wi no table as I fail to see why I need a table

ETA.

Almost to prove my point the mother and daughter get off the train and are replaced by 2 30ish lads.

Both sit at the table vacated by the ladies.

Do the tables give you super powers?

That's where the plugs are.

Everyone scrambled for the tables before they had power sockets, though.

Pepper has the correct answer. It's also a more pleasant journey to not have the back of a seat right in front of your face.

I usually go for a two seater now rather have some bag with her brats sit around you and insist on talking to you when you're clearly reading. Stick your jacket and bag on the seat next to you and you're sorted unless the train is really busy. When I was regularly travelling up and down from Wales to Inverness though I took extreme measures to grab a table and keep it for the journey. An empty tin of Special Brew or Tennants Super on the table, and a big stare and friendly smile at anyone walking towards you does wonders.

So if you see the seats empty, are you going to avoid them just in case someone might sit across from you?

Not really the point I was making.

The point which seems missed is human behaviour.

Everyone wants the seats with the tables even though they don't need them.

Much the same as if someone got on later who telly could do with a table I very much doubt folk would give them a table.

Who takes their telly on a train?

Only if the opposite 1 is empty.

Once someone sits opposite you have less legroom

As someone with longer legs than Twiggy, who has sat in both many times, I can confirm that this is not true.

I find the tables a tad low, however, and need to fold myself up in order to fit in, but I'm fine once I'm settled. Anyone over 6' 3" must find it impossible to fit their legs under them.

They're taking the piss if they want to sit a TV on the table TBH, especially if it's an old CRT.
