BFTD
Pretty sure my mum went to the local high school back in the Fifties, if that's any help. Edit: @Granny Danger, had high schools been invented when you were a lad? Edited August 14, 2017 by BigFatTabbyDave

Jmothecat2
I think all the secondary schools in my area are referred to as Academies. Banchory Academy, Turrif Academy, Peterhead Academy, Inverurie Academy, Aboyne Academy, Mackie Academy etc
Harry Kinnear
Since when? Well I would say that I live in an area that is relatively working class and all our schools in Falkirk District are High Schools and we all refer to them as High Schools. I have however occasionally heard some posh folk refer to them as secondary school. Hence my theory.

Jmothecat2
In fact apart from private schools I'm struggling to think of any Schools near where I grew up that weren't called Academies. Only just realised the same isn't true down here in Edinburgh. Is it a north of Scotland thing?
Harry Kinnear
Exactly. I was at the Academy, we also had St Josephs and Max High don't think anyone in the toon ever said the words "secondary school" ever. Have heard this also, Boness has an Academy and folk there say they go to the Academy. I'm not being cheeky or smart I have honestly very rarely heard folk referring to it as secondary. It may be an area thing.

Zen Archer (Raconteur)
Back in the fifties/sixties the secondary school used to be an extension of the primary school, Inzievar and Burntisland Primaries come to mind as an example. Pupils wanting to progress to taking highers would move on to 'The High School'

BFTD
They're all academies here too, but we are very posh in Clackmannanshire. Naturally, Stirlingshire is ridden with High Schools, the poor dears. 1 minute ago, Melanius Mullarkey said: I went to a school, once.
