Became unfit after quitting football a few years ago and I've only now started running when I can as I've got a holiday coming up. Usually been doing about 2.5/3km and struggling like f**k but this morning I ran 4.5km and was feeling a lot better, especially considering the weather.

Chuffed :)

Good going folks - looks like decent results for pretty much everyone who ran this weekend. Glad that the weather was much better for you all this year than last, though I guess it would have been pretty warm for everyone finishing around lunch time today which would have made for a tough finish.

That out and in section is just a bit soul destroying

Aye, it is. And the marathon is much, much worse as that's 9 miles out and 9 back. I haven't done the half in Edinburgh and I don't think I'd find it too bad, but that awful out and back is the main reason I'm not that keen to do the marathon there again.

I took my wee lad to parkrun yesterday. He's 6 years old and ran the 5k in 30:15!! Future talent I reckon ;)

That is very impressive for a 6 years old! Definitely some potential there.

Well done to all the Edinburgh runners today - tough day for it, although I think the half marathoners would have been ok temperature wise.

Got round the marathon course in 3:39:51.

I was unsure of my target time going into the race but thought I could have got round in under 3 and a half and was well inside that pace at the turn around 18 miles when I started to slow.  By mile 21 I was really struggling and had to do the death shuffle for the final 5 miles as it really started to heat up.

I probably went out too fast, but that's a lesson learnt.  At least I have the benchmark now for the next one and I'm happy enough with the time.

My son ran 1.13.58 at the Edinburgh Half Marathon this morning for a new PB in 13th position.

Nearly 5 mins quicker than last year.

Considering the minimum age is 17 and he's still only 16, it's not a bad effort!

I did the 5k on the Saturday and managed 20.19 in 17th position.

My splits were:

3.55

5.04

4.00

3.36

3.31

Guess which km contained the hill...

Although you do get the benefit of the downhill, I reckon the hill takes a least a minute off your time.

Good fun though. Legs are a bit stiff today though. Not used to running downhill like that!

That is a stunning time for a half, especially for a 16 year old. Seems like your son has real talent and could be a top runner in a few years if he continues to progress.

Good 5k from you as well - that hill in the 2nd km must be brutal.

Amazing effort mate, especially on such a warm day.

.

We'll see.

The thing is, he doesn't specialise and he's only been running for a couple of years so it's hard to gauge.

When he does middle distance on the track against boys his own age, he's probably just middle of the pack.

He came way down the pecking order when he ran the national Cross country at Falkirk earlier in the year.

So there are a lot if talented boys out there.

16 is a dangerous age though. Who knows who will fall by the wayside.

His current 800 metre time suggests that his 10k and HM times actually slow!

But, as I said, there are a number of boys who can run 800 even faster!

Here's a question. With optimum training, what's the best 5k time a normal Joe could hope to achieve? Obviously, under 13 minutes is a world record, under 15 minutes is pretty much unheard of - then you've got people like Bishyton under 18 minutes. Is that solely through committed training, or do you need to have innate ability as well?

Or to put it another way, with all the training resources and regime, commitment and ideal conditions, what is the best time for 5k / 10k / half marathon that a normal chap could achieve?

PB of 1.35.20 at Edinburgh half for me yesterday. Had a wee slump at about half way, but I felt quite good fitness wise near the end. Only problem was sore feet. Combination of bad technique and shoes which are now getting binned to blame!
