Labuschagne opting to come and play for Glamorgan last year is turning out to be one of the most inspired decisions a cricketer has ever made. Five 50s and five tons in the county championship, then in the right place at the right time to capitalise on his good fortune at being picked to stand in for Smith when Archer whacked him on the head. 4 Test centuries in 5 months or so since then.

Aus 283/3 at stumps. Labuschagne on 130 and Wade on 22 right now. Warner made 45, Burns 18, Smith 63.

Bit of a weak NZ side with Williamson, Boult, Nicholls, Santner, Southee and Ferguson all out though.
First time since 2009 that they have started a test without one of Williamson, Southee or Boult in the side. Injuries and illness have decimated the team. Wagner seems to have Warner's number the same way Broad did in the summer.

The likes of Bairstow, Root and Stokes have failed to achieve their potential in test cricket. A couple of years ago the England middle order was a pretty serious unit, they blasted their way out of a good few top order collapses. But now they do not appear to have anyone who can consistently get big scores.

Stokes and Root have failed to reach their potential?

Stokes is one of the top players in the world right now, and single handedly win a test match ala Botham in the summer.

Root is in a sustained slump, and bairstow is all over the place. But stokes doesn't deserve to be in that category.

Hard ask for England now. Need pope and buttler to get them up to around 250 as after the next wicket falls they will be over quickly
It's unreal how often these collapses happen with this team.

Surely there's pressure on root now?

I'd say these two need to put on an even bigger partnership. 280 would give a platform to the guys coming after.
