AberdeenBud
As for two spinners? Maybe when they didn't cover wickets it was a good idea but most teams struggle to get one decent spinner never mind two of the fuckers. A genuine all rounder that bowls good spinas well as being a good batsman would be ideal, but there arent any. Agar? AberdeenBud
Personally I would give Finn another go, especially since the next Test is on his home ground and he has a half decent record there. However given the way he was attacked today and his obvious lack of confidence, I think the selectors may feel compelled to change. The management also seem to hold Bresnans all round game in high regard.
booitsme7
What a test match to start this ashes series and this match brought back memories from Edgbaston 2005. Only think missing was Andrew Flintoff to console the Australians. Anderson with his 10 wickets now has 317 wickets in tests just 8 behind 2nd place Bob Willis on 325 wickets. Bring on the 2nd test which starts on Thursday and lets hope its as good as this one.
wellboy1991
The last match really could work in two ways. Firstly give the Aussies some confidence that they are a match for England, fire them up for the rest if the Series. Alternatively could severely destroy the young squads morale at coming so close and will lead to a 5-0 whitewash. Lehman is a strong character who builds the teams morale and group togetherness so I hope it has the first affect! Really setting up for an outstanding summer of cricket!
jmothecat
Really enjoyed that test match. Consistently exciting. Any time Australia started to look like they may be dead and burried they managed to get themselves back in contention. Although I think this does show that the gulf in class between England and Australia isn't as huge as some people have been claiming (Botham's 10-0 prediction in particular), I do think Australia will struggle to recover from this. As much as I want England to win the series, I think it may have set up the series better had Australia won. Very much looking forward to next week now.

Australi will make much more of a series of it on their own patch. They will be battle hardened after this and the wickets will be suiting them. I still think they will lose both series all the same. On the Finn/Bresnan thing, I'd maybe keep Finn there and dump Bairstow for Bresnan. Its not as if Bairstow has made a ton of runs anyway and the extra bowler will be handy for when Broad or Finn are pie chucking. Finns record at Lords is actually very decent indeed though so although he had a total 'mare in the second innings it will be a big call to bin him for a match he could well be taking wickets in. I dont think England need six specialist batsmen anyway.

Englands first inning debacle made the game good and tight as did the stumping decision when Agar was on 6. I have no idea why they always seem to start series so poorly, they did it in opening innings in India, NZ and in the home series against the Kiwis too. They got away with it here, the weather helped them in NZ too. They just need to knuckle down, take the time and play into the series properly. They are better than Australia andwill prove that over the two series I reckon, but the Aussies will definitely fight and scrap, and I'm glad they will as it makes for good cricket generally. Australias bowlers look like they will be good when they click but they have their own versions of Finn there too. The wickets will be set up to help Englands strengths and more particularly the spin of Swann. They know Anderson will extract what he can out the surface and he can make the ball swing either way anyway, regardless of the surface. Finn and Broad will just need to get on with it.

He was just playing the McGrath role to annoy the Aussies. Which is a very good thing - rubbing Australia's nose in it that they are shite now, and much poorer than England, after their arrogance over the years is a very very good thing. It won't be 10-0, but England will win the "10 match series" very handily. By 5 or 6 tests. And will still have the Ashes when they come home from Aus.

Some folk really don't understand the nature of a wind up. Botham is an arch Aussie baiter, he knew he would get a reaction by saying this and Its one of the few things he is any good at. I wonder why him and Ian Chappell never share the commentary duties, that would be fairly entertaining... die hard doonhamer
So, same squad for the second test. Will Finn play? I have a feeling he will, but I would rather Bresnan played.

If Bresnan is playing I'd rather it was in place of Bairstow than Finn. Its Finns home wicket and his record there is very decent indeed. It might be all it takes to get him firing properly again...
Raidernation
Finn will be in the side, it's his home ground. Anyone know where I can get live TV coverage here in the US? I can listen to TMS which is spectacular, but I miss seeing what's happening.

berwick-the-unbeatable
I'd opt for the same again personally. I hope Finn does well as I find him one of the more likeable persons in the squad, although he can admittedly beexpensive, perhaps owing to the fact he often looks as though he often lacks a plan B. As for potentially bringing in Bresnan for Bairstow, i'm unsure. I'd give Bairstow another chance, but i'm pretty sure Bresnan is averaging above him at the minute anyway. I'd prefer Bopara in if he was to go at some point. Looking at the news it seems that Bairstow is safe anyway, and the focus seems to be on Bresnan for Finn.
Bluenose5
Botham didn't really think it would be 10-0. He was just playing the McGrath role to annoy the Aussies. Botham was clearly fishing but didn't get much bait. I wouldn't say we are "much poorer" than england as you suggest, I wouldn't get that far ahead of yourself. England are a better side but aren't streets ahead that's for sure. Both sides have had their share of arrogance over the years but I would have to say our so-called arrogance (which isn't as bad as the poms has been lately) was more merited than the poms as our team back then was miles better than this england team is. As for the next test it's looking more ever likely Cowan will be dropped and Khawaja will take his place.

I think there is a fair distance between the sides and this will be more apparent as the series goes on. Australias batting isn't good and it's bowling attack is erratic. England are always slow starters in a series and will win this series at a bit of a canter. Australia might well grow into this couple of series as it wears on, but it could also go wrong if the defeats become fairly heavy and confidence is lost and they begin to make panic changes. There are one or two good players in the Aussie ranks and there is a bit of rawness there too which could go either way really. Results and confidence the results bring can go a long way to making a good career, but England will get better, their top order can dismantle that Aussie attack, and will do in due course.
