flyingscot
Do they still dig up bodies there? Can't believe I got another puncture today. This thing goes down more often than the wife. Maybe your tyres aren't strong enough or your tubes are too weak. I'd deffo recommend new slick tyres, for road use they make a difference.
The Master
Just been to Arbroath and back which was 30-ish miles. Horrible head wind coming back, but a decent run nonetheless.
Unleash The Nade
Out with club yesterday morning and did 35 miles. Just back from a trip up to Carron Valley ,which was another 22 miles. Absolutely soaked twice which I dont really mind, but really, really wish these winds would just f**k off Edited June 19, 2011 by Unleash The Nade
The Master
I seem to have done something to my left knee this afternoon. I was fine when I got home and took a wee walk to Asda (~1 mile there and back) to warm down, but when I got home I found I couldn't fully bend said knee. There's a pain like I've been stabbed running down the inside of it. Walking is fine, but bending it right back (like when kneeling) is almost impossible. It sounds like a probable Patellar Subluxation with Iliotibal Band Discombobulation causing Retrusion of the Meniscus Fibrocartilagin into the Medial Menisci. Can I have your bike now you don't need it? Only joking Did my 22 mile run to the Falkirk Stadium & back today. Slight improvement on time but it felt like cycling through treacle when the wind turned.

It might be worth getting your riding position checked out, as knee problems can spell big trouble, and they're often caused by a poor riding set up. Are you using clipless pedals?

Are you using clipless pedals? No. In terms of riding position, the people in the shop made sure my saddle was at the right height before they'd let me cycle away, so I'd like to think it's in the right place. But I'll check once I've got my rear wheel back on, because I also discovered another (very slow) puncture as a result of yesterday and the patches in the repair kit I've got are kind of shit

Out tonight and did 14 miles.Very little wind for a change and averaged 18.2 mph, which I'm quite happy with

You need to think about how far forward (or back) you set your saddle on the seatpost. This is important if you think about the impact it can have on on where you sit relative to the bottom bracket of your bike, and then consider how this determines your pedalling circle, and hence, your knees. I hope that makes some kind of sense. Don't be lulled into thinking that the position of your saddle only determines the reach distance to your handle bars. Yep, and I'm still pulling on knee-warmers and arm-warmers in mid-June. This weather is fucking hellish. We're off to Crete for a fortnight on Sunday. Will miss the bike, but won't miss the weather
flyingscot
Having pain in my thumbs after cycling these days- need to check my position on the bike a bit more carefully and check my hand position. It seems to be coming from too much pressure on the base of the thumbs.
The Master
Was back on the bike today and me knee seems fine. My riding position is OK, so I'm thinking I just strained something by trying to take a hill in the wrong gear. Certainly, if it were more serious than that I'd have probably been sucked back into the world of bus passes for a few weeks!

It seems to be coming from too much pressure on the base of the thumbs. Median nerve compression? Most bike specific gloves/mits have strategically placed padding or gel inserts to combat numbness and pain caused by stress in this area. Not all work for everyone so it can be a bit of trial and error. Look out for reviews that highlight good protection in this area, and that should help. The ulnar nerve is the other common problem area.
Unleash The Nade
Right, been persevering with the local cycling club and finally decided Thursday night hard training not for me. I hadn't gone to this for a few weeks but still went along to their Tuesday night training sessions,(which aren't as hard core) and also their Saturday moring runs, which are around 25-35 miles, averaging around 18 mph, hoping this would builtd up strength and stamina. I therefore decided it was time to try out a Thursday night again and did so last night . I went out with the(slowest) first group and managed to stick with them for the first 6 miles, where we averaged 21 mph and thought, great, cracked it. However,we turned into a long 2.5 mile straight, into a headwind. I was in the wrong gear for a few seconds and by the time I recovered, the group had gone ahead of me by about 12 yards. I thought I could make this back up,but ,soon realised that once detached this was very difficult and once out of the protection of the group, had the full force of the wind against me....what a fucking difference that made!. The gap quickly widened and was soon well away from me even although I was still managing around 17 mph into the wind. Now bearing in mid they do 3 x 9 mile loops,,I soon thought f**k it and did another loop on my own, having the total humiliation of being lapped by the second group after around 14miles . I've therefore decided that whilst I still enjoy being part of the club,I'm too old and obviously unfit to do the Thursdays and my days of competing with these young, fit b*****ds are well and truly gone I also made an error in my post last week regarding the clubs annual time trials. The winning time for 10 miles was 22.minutes 4 seconds, which is an incredible 27.19 mph The guy who did this is a time trial specialist and seemingly shite at road racing!!
