**Fantasy Golf Week 5**

brooks-money.gif.19aa3778adbf998bd398a9ed2e806d66.gif

Get that money.

Last week Paddy Reed proved he's one of the best closers in golf. This week, Brooks Koepka fired a timely reminder that he's also a stone cold killer(when he can be arsed),coming from 5 back and seeing off a slightly rejuvenated Jordan Spieth, who has morphed into the weird hybrid of a prime Seve and a college nerd, and Xander Schauffele, who developed a bad case of the Finau's. Brooks' return is a good thing for 2 reasons, firstly, no one has picked him, so less work for me and secondly, he loves to noise up Bryson.

Over at the Bonesaw and Waterboarding Invitational, where the appearance fees outstrip the prize money, DJ cruised to a victory where he barely seemed to get out of 2nd gear. Despite the lack of spectators, he still managed to hit one. In a country known for its cruel and unusual punishments, let's just hope he's not given the House of Saud any ideas.

With the world's top golfers ditching their morals to accept fat paychecks, we go over to the standings and the fantasy league competitors, who do this not for money, but for the love of the game. A good week for those who had both DJ and Finau in their team, a 50 point forecast bonus. @J_Stewart still the front runner, @Honest_Man#1 and your Fantasy League Commissioner (didn't want to win it anyway) getting left behind at the moment.

A bit of a breather this week as there's no European Tour event, after 3 weeks of stellar fields, all the big boys have gone home, probably muttering under their breath.

So, we're left with the AT & T Pro-am, that's not a pro-am this year because of the pandemic. Bad news for those who enjoy seeing Samuel L Jackson skull one through the back of the green then. It's a poor field this year, headed up by Berger, Cantlay and Casey. Usually played over 3 courses, we've just got 2 this year. Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill. Pebble needs no introduction, one of the most revered venues in the game, the stretch from no.5 to no.10 amongst the most iconic in golf. It could well play tougher this year, with no pro-am = no easy pin placements. Spyglass is not as famous as it's neighbour, but probably slightly tougher and a beautiful course in it's own right, sitting on the Monterey Peninsula, arguably the best golfing land outside of the British Isles.

PGA of America are to allow digital measuring devices to be used in all their major championships, effective immediately. Can't really see it making much difference to pace of play if that's what they are hoping for.

Give them all golf buggies as well and they can all bin their caddies and keep that extra 10% for themselves.

So here we are, seven months into our golf trip around New Zealand.

We have completed 145 rounds on 133 courses which works out at just under 5 rounds per week. Neither of us show any signs of tiring – apart from the usual sprained wrists, sore backs and stiff necks!

For the last two months we have been tootling around the South Island in a largely anti-clockwise direction. From Picton we came down the West coast and central Otago and played some delightful courses, among them: Roxburgh with its stark outcrops of rock, Cromwell for its manicured looks, Port Chalmers for allowing us to stay in their car park and their friendly locals who were always inviting us in for a beer or two, and Lake Tekapo ‘Cairns” for its maturing water feature course.

The population catchment of many clubs dictates that a nine hole course is all they can support, almost inevitably it also means that there is no paid greenkeeper(s) and that the courses are tended entirely by volunteers’. Good on them, every single man and woman. Some clubs have added their own art around the courses and I attach a selection of some of the best and weirdest.
Some of the bigger towns on the South Island, that support 18 hole courses, were a real pleasure to play on, these included: Motueka, Nelson, Invercargill, Queens Park, Chisholm and Balmacewen.

On our travels around New Zealand we have rarely seen busy camp sites or golf courses in fact in most cases both are pretty empty. It shows how much New Zealand is geared to the international tourism trade and how much businesses are hurting through the Covid crisis. Lets hope that we get going with vaccinations sooner rather than later.

Having a self-contained motorhome gives us plenty options of where we stay and it seems to split pretty evenly between “expensive” camps (with washing machines), cheap Caravan Association type camps because they are well located in towns, freedom camping for the views and at Golf Clubs because they are friendly.

Our plan from here is to work our way northwards up the South Island, taking a month or so, up the east coast back towards Picton and then up the North Island east coast, arriving in Auckland around May or June.

So when do you lads reckon you will be out on the fairways again? The courses I play might be closed until the end of the month, and with so much snow there is always the possibility of flooding or standing water. I genuinely don’t think il be teeing it up again until early march

Forecast for Glasgow is for milder and drier weather towards the end of next week, so hopefully next weekend or the Monday.

I watched his last few holes and he had totally lost interest, taking no time over his shots and just compounding each error he made.

He was playing with Paul Casey and Max Homa and I'm pretty sure the two of them were having a laugh at the way he was carrying on.

Spieth is leading the field again like it's 2016. Knox is also going well.
