Rugby Union

I would have preferred France for a bit of a jolly to watch the games in 2023, so hopefully Europe get 2027, although just because the recommendation is SA doesn't mean they will get it.

You probably need 8 stadium's to host, although the struggle would be if you have any football stadia its in the middle of the season so how do you free them up for 4 weeks. A possibility would be to host a group in Glasgow, one in Edinburgh / Newcastle, one in Ireland and one in Wales

It would probably be doable with Murrayfield / St James'/ Pittodrie,  Hampden / Ibrox / Parkhead (alternating weekends) Scotstoun for smaller games and Rugby Park,  Aviva / Croke /  Kingspan and Millenium / Scarlets / Bristol

QF in Murrayfield, Hampden, Millennium and Aviva, SF Hampden and Murrayfield, final Murrayfield

Spreads the games about the UK, without needing to be London-centric

Surely the football grounds plus Murrayfield would be sufficient for a Scottish bid? According to Wiki three of the Japanese host stadia have capacities below 25,000. If we give some games to the other Home Nations and France, like Wales did when they hosted, it wouldn't take too much effort to do it.

We're not that far behind the capacities that were available in New Zealand for their World Cup but I think we'd need something bigger

Sitting on the other side of the planet from England Dunedin's 30,000 stadium was more than big enough for the 20,00 that watched England beat Georgia in 2011 but Pittodrie or Rugby Park  would be too small to host that fixture

One of the host venues in 1999 had a smaller capacity than Broadwood! Scotland could host this easily!

I don't think France should host as they already have The Olympics and hosted the Euros pretty recently.

Hopefully South Africa get it, so they don't give it to one of the silly Southern Hemisphere countries with stupid timezones in 2027.

No way will irb want venues as small as 99 rwc had. They are all about the £s.

Ibrox had to get dispensation for the CG 7s because the pitch wasn't long enough to accomodate the required length of pitch+deadball area. I'm not sure they'd allow that for the RWC though.

In any case, Scotland would never bid. We don't have the stadia or the finances to fund it in the initial stages.

According to that grid only 35% of it is about finance and commercial commitments otherwise France would be clear leader

Well what irb says publicly n does privately are different things. I'd b astonished if any future rwc has stadia below 20 k. Personally I'm all for a few of the smaller nations games being hosted at small intimate rugby clubs with a proper atmosphere. Those days are gone sadly.

Just to follow up on some of the reasons given against the French bid as follows,

They are scored down for the Olympics being the year after (fair), for anti-doping being illegal so risking arrests for doping offenses(!!!) (yes that is seriously in the document as a bad thing), and for wishing to use Tier 2 officials as 4th officials and time keepers (!!!). They are also scored down slightly because St Ettienne does not have enough hotel capacity.

Added that they were unsure on the pitch sizes as the french bid didn't include it in their dosier but SA did, but 8 were used at Euro 16

No way we could be sole hosts of a rwc these days. Irb are after £s so want biggest capacity stadia possible hence England used almost all football grounds for last one. Most football pitches struggle for size (in goal area is tiny if you look back at most venues for rwc). Ironically given current thread about Hampden it can be used for rugby and has been in past. Ibrox has hosted 7s obviously and parkhead would also be big enough. That's only four stadia. We could probably co host with someone like Wales but that's about it. No guarantee it would be a money spinner either given how greedy irb are. Think we are hosting u20 rwc this year which is more manageable m women's rwc would be within our capabilities too.

For the Commonwealth 7s at Ibrox they had to extend the pitch at both ends to bring it up to the required size.

The Groups were drawn a while back. It's only the order of matches that have been announced now.

Neither ourselves nor Ireland seem to have any particular disadvantage. The only bad news is that we only have four days between our penultimate game and the potentially crucial final match against Japan.

As the match in question is likely to be against someone like Romania, we should be able to rest a few for that game and still win.
