highlandcowden
Well toughly enjoyed that Lancaster city game-can even drink from the sidelines.unfortunately, despite the low crowd, there was a bit of bother in the surrounding streets afterthe end which will be why there was a fair old police presence towards the end of the game
Saigon Raider
Went to Korea vs Japan in the Asian Games final on Saturday. Korea won 2-1 after extra time and their players now avoid the mandatory military service after winning a gold medal. Took 3 hours to travel the 40km to the game from Jakarta - traffic even more unbelievable than usual. Jute
Heading to Spartans v Whitehill in Lowland League today. ETA: Finished 1-0 to Spartans but win was far more comfortable than the score suggests. Whitehill look like they will struggle this year. GordonS
Edinburgh Uni 1 v 5 Stirling Uni, Lowland League. I've previously been sceptical about the university teams in the fifth tier of Scottish football. I unreservedly take that back. This was one of the most enjoyable, civilised experiences I've had watching non-league football. In fact, given the choice of any place to watch football in Edinburgh, I'd choose here. The ground is very smart and tidy, with modern and well maintained facilities. They've got the best written programme I think I've ever read. Not a massive amount in it, but it's not cluttered by adverts and pictures - just lots if text in good prose. The pavillion is a very civilised place to be before the match with good pies, mugs of tea and home baking. If you're a sad old bagger like me it's nirvana. The walls are lined with annual team photos, and I found among the 1994-95 team the massive red-headed Northern Irish guy I fouled in an intramural match by kicking in the oxter. The pitch is maybe just shy of premier league standard, only falling short by being less than completely flat. Nothing that would affect the roll of the ball though. The stand is perfect for this level, four rows of seats and well covered, with clear plastic ends for visibility in the corners. The Pentlands make a great backdrop to the view. Back-to-middle there was little difference between the teams, but going forward Stirling have four properly talented guys. I don't know anything about these teams, so I don't know if they're new or have been there a while; all I can say is that, in terms of technique, they could play upper end of League One. Physicality might be a problem though. The admission fee was worth it for the fourth goal alone, a sumptuous, controlled side-foot volley close to the ground from the edge of the box, curled low into the far corner. Only 48 watching, which is a real shame because it deserves more. If I were an Edinburgh alumnus who lived locally, I'd definitely be down here most home games. Not the best pictures, but others take better ground photos than me.

It's a fantastic backdrop for a game, and dead handy for me since I live south of the city. I'm definitely going to go to more games there in future.

cowdenbeath
Been at a few this week. Kelty 8-0 Edinburgh United on Tuesday, Hill of Beath Haws 1-3 BSC in the under 20s last night and at Spartans 1-0 Whitehill today when I bumped into Jute. Had pondered about the Uni derby game as well on the train over

Ivo den Bieman
Newcastle Benfield 1-1 Workington Reds, in front of around 200-250, 60 or so from West Cumbria. Was a decent game, Workington were the better side as you'd expect from a club who have done pretty well in the Northern Premier League in the last few seasons. Benfield were spirited though and had one or two really tidy players who could do a job at a higher level. The ground and set up reminded me of a good Glasgow junior club, very well run and a friendly welcome, with the social club going like a fair. Reply is I think in midweek and Workington really should prevail at home.

Inverkeithing v St Andrews for me yesterday. Fairly comfortable 2-0 win for the visitors. GordonS
Celtic Women 0 - 0 Rangers Women Starting with the game to get it out of the road - it was terrible. Neither side could string more than three passes together, it was just an ugly midfield scrap with few chances. The standard was a lot closer to SWPL2 than to Glasgow City or the national side. I wouldn't presume this was representative of either side, though. FWIW, two of the best matches I've been at this season were women's games. This was my first time at K Park, and I have to say it's not my cup of tea. It's a 3G cage with a really bad pitch. That didn't help the standard of the game, the bounce was so high they might as well have been playing on a trampoline. Fans are restricted to a stand on one side of the pitch, with four rows of wee backless plastic seats that are pretty uncomfortable. They're also not high enough and I'm fairly tall, so I ended up with my arthritic knees getting sore through squatting like a frog - I stood along at the end in the second half. There's a covered terrace behind the goal but access to it was closed. In any case you'd be watching through a net, which I hate doing. The hot food sold out very early, the woman in the snack bar said nobody had told her it would be a big game. Looked good though, and the prices were very decent. The attendance was about 250, mostly friends and family of players or families with female footballers. There were very few there just because they're Celtic or Rangers fans - fewer than you'd get at a Development League game against St Mirren. Considering when these sides meet in under 16 matches they need to play behind closed doors, the lack of interest is disappointing. The clubs did practically nothing to promote the game, which was a head-bangingly stupid missed opportunity in a week in which women's football was front-and-centre in the news. Rangers had one tweet, a RT on the morning of the match; their most recent video about the women's team on their YouTube channel was in June; and their website, which carries match reports at least, had no preview and doesn't even list fixtures and results. Celtic's website is better, with a preview article on the game and they do list fixtures and results, but they had precisely zero tweets about the game and last used the word "women" in a tweet on International Women's Day last year. Their last video about the women was in April 2017. Compared with clubs like Hibs, or how much they tweet about their male youth teams, it's incredibly poor. At the weekend Rangers did more to highlight their boys under 11s than their women's team. Not cool, and it speaks volumes about their priorities.
