  1. I would echo these comments. None of my friends in my statistics class like football. I have both male and female friends in the class, and I can't have a conversation with a single one of them about football. There was a guy in my maths class last year who was a big Sunderland fan, and I could get some good football chat with him, but I don't do maths any more, so uni is now an official football free zone for me.
  2. I thought it wasn't the "done thing" to concede a frame when you didn't need snookers. I would say that the Higgins incident was different, because it was a black ball finish, and his concession would simply hand the 7 points for the black to Robertson.
  3. As far as I know it's on. It's been on during this holiday weekend the last two years.
  4. He won 13 caps for Scotland, so not as daft a suggestion as it seems now. He was also right about Barry Robson, even if the initial comment was meant as a joke.
  5. I've stayed at home for the first two years of uni, and I've never really felt that I've missed out on much. I've never really been that bothered about going out and getting drunk or going clubbing all the time, and I don't reckon I would do it that often even if I stayed in Glasgow. I've still managed to find a close group of friends, and I am still able to go to the pub or the union with them, or go the odd night out to a comedy club or whatever, which to me is a much more enjoyable evening than going and getting blitzed. The main reason I went to uni was to get a degree so that I could get a good job, so I'd rather do it straight after school than waste a couple of years earning a lot less than I could get when I get through my course. Obviously having a social life makes it more enjoyable, but that shouldn't be your main reason for going to uni.
  6. My friend did that on Freshers Week at Glasgow, and despite us going into 3rd year after the summer, she still gets texts all the time from folk she doesn't know.
  7. I was hoping Stuart would bite... ...and he sort of did.
  8. It's hard to say whether or not university is worthwhile in the long run. From my personal experience of doing a maths and statistics degree, I'd say that about 70% of the things you learn will be useful in the world of work, but the other 40% will probably never be of any use once you have graduated.
  9. Taking Chances - Winning With Probability by John Haigh. I'm studying statistics, and probability is my favourite part of it and is something I might be interested in studying further. The book shows how probability can be used in a number of real-life situations, such as gambling, board games, the National Lottery and TV game shows. It tries to avoid equations in the main text, which would be good for readers without much statistical knowledge, but it has the equations used at the back for those who are interested.
  10. Even if it had a home player in it, I think it would take a lot to better last year's final.
  11. It's very difficult to compare the two eras objectively. Even things like the average break scores - which I think will be higher in the modern game - can be affected by the improvements in tables, balls and players' equipment. I've only been watching snooker for about 10 years, so I don't know what the standard was like in the 1980s, but I think the players nowadays are very skilled, particularly in safety play.
  12. That was a bit strange to me. Surely if he was trying to fix the match, he would have tried to make it seem as though he was trying to pot the ball, and would have only missed it by a narrow margin. Missing it by so much would surely arouse suspicion. Although, perhaps it's because he's a shite snooker player and was worried that if he tried to miss it by a wee bit, then it might actually have went in.
  13. I thought this thread was going to be about the match-fixing allegations levelled at Maguire and Burnett in their match on Monday. A large number of bets were placed on Maguire winning 9-3, and, of course, that was how the match finished, with Burnett missing a fairly simple black in the last frame to hand Maguire the victory. Burnett claimed that he found out about the betting during the interval, and that he missed the black because of the massive pressure on him to make the pot to avoid accusations of cheating
  14. That explains why Oasis haven't had anything for a while.
  15. Yeah, I've been watching it. He's played well so far, but as usual Nadal is so difficult to beat. All those missed break points at the start of the 2nd set might prove to be the final straw.
  16. Both of these were missing for some reason. And to keep us going, here's the next number.
  17. I might do that if any more disappear. Other than that I could put my name on them, but that seems really anal.
  18. It was meant to be 1511, not 1151. Here's one to make up for it: You still don't get it. We're looking for pictures
  19. Someone keeps nicking my cans of Pepsi Max from the kitchen in my work. I wouldn't mind giving away the odd one if someone asked, but it's annoying when you go up expecting to have one there and it's gone. I'm only working part-time during the summer, so I don't really want to say anything in case I tread on folk's toes.
