For what littles it worth, I have your best midfield pairing being Doyle-Hayes and McGrath, or if you're wanting to be more defensive, JDH and Flynn. As a midfield 3 its the three mentioned.

MacPherson closest fit to Flynn, Erhahon a closer fit to Doyle-Hayes. No real match for McGrath.

JDHs best fit is a Deep Playmaker beside an aggressive ball winner to let him pick up the scraps, and a more attacking player. Second best fit is as a box to box player, worst fit is as a "10".

Honestly though, it feels like a worthless system that I've built the more I think about it, so I'll probably just scrap it all pretty soon.

Your description of JDH makes sense. A three with him, McGrath and a Goodwin type midfielder would probably work well.

  2. Just pondering after watching the highlights again, so this isn’t me levelling criticism in any way.

We’ve lost quite a few goals either to set pieces or late on (probably more so set pieces). Is that something that Alnwick should work on? Jim said post match that only two should have been in the wall, but we went with 3 leaving a spare man.

Kinda reminds me of the Paul Gallacher era when we lost a lot of late goals. He wasn’t the best at owning the 18 yard box at set pieces.

Was surprised to read a tweet from Lee Mair yesterday in support of a footballer who was frozen out by an ex-manager the said player scored against his ex manager at the weekend. Lee Mair wrote he had the same experience at St Mirren being frozen out by Danny Lennon and Tommy Craig.

Depends - when is a player frozen out and when is one dropped for being shite?

I don’t think Mair was a big miss, from memory.

Jamie McGrath and Marcus Fraser St Mirren contract latest as club step up talks - Daily Record

I thought Tait was going to stroll the POTY awards at the start of the season, but gradually Marcus Fraser has improved week by week and now he is a standout, he's my player of the year at the moment.

It’s funny reading this and a few other posts as I just don’t see it with Fraser. Really just shows how we all see things differently.

Id be interested to know (do we have a Random Guy version?) how many goals come from our right back area. I also feel his distribution is weak, especially for the positions he finds himself in. Pre the semi final, I was keen on seeing Tait on the right and Mason on the left.

    It’s a funny ol’ game.

Yep I like the stadium as it is too, and wouldn’t be too fussed one way or the other if they didn’t install safe standing, but I think it would be good to give people a choice. I think I would enjoy standing to watch a game on the odd occasion. The grounds that people enjoy going to most are usually standing; Ayr United, behind the goals at QotS etc.

I don’t see too many issues with turning W7 into safe standing now that the area is no longer used for away fan overspill, and as has been said most of the fans in that area stand anyway. I may be wrong, but is it not only fans in the North Bank group who have season tickets in W7 anyway, so it wouldnt see anyone being moved from their usual seat. The club/stewards seem to tolerate them standing in amongst the seats, which I would imagine is a bigger health and safety risk than the metal railings that would be installed for safe standing.

I’d like to see a standing area as it would undoubtedly improve atmosphere at games. However, not entirely sure it would work in our place.

For example, if you took all seats out of W7 and made that standing, what sort of gap would you need between the standing and seating area so that the people sat on their arses can still see?

    I’m overthinking this...

Time for me to be completely honest... think of the worst 0-0 shitfest I’ve ever withessed between St Mirren and Hamilton. 99.99% certain to be a Gus MacPherson game. If someone told me tomorrow’s game would be even worse than that, but Jason Fcuking Leitch and Wee Jimmy Krankie would let us go to it... I’d crawl over broken glass from Cumbernauld to attend.

That was a terrible time. Wasn’t there something like five 0-0 games in a row between Gus and Billy Reid?

To be fair every team in the league have switched on to his pace. Drop 15-20 yards deeper and his pace is pretty much useless, like Livi done today.

We are going behind first in every single game we are having to come on to teams which doesn't really suit him.

Tannadice next on Wednesday, oh joy.

I doubt teams are adjusting their formation for Connolly, I’m more thinking we take so long to move the ball that we can never get him isolated with the fullback.

I fear Connolly is just a very very fast version of Morais. Very unpredictable and not got much of an end product.

We should know by now Brophy or Erwin up front on their own doesn't work. Obika is the best player for that.

    Mason starting ahead of Durmus.

I hope Jim recovers from this quickly and learns from it. Seems to be the same mistake every single time. Tough games coming up now too, pressure could be on him again.

Just as well we weren't at Hampden for that, I'd feel 10 times worse.

Connolly has the unpredictability, plus pace that most defenders in Scotland don’t have. We just don’t try to utilise it in any real way.

Dargo was an excellent player who was physically broken by that point. When he was on the park his intelligence and movement shone through in a Gus MacPherson side that was far too ponderous for him.

Dargo made Dorman the player he was with us as his runs made space for Dorman. He was noticeably poorer when Dargo didn’t play - Rangers SF a prime example when he was being talked up as a £1m player.

That would be brilliant to have Doyle-Hayes a bit longer. It’s interesting to see Jim talking up his defensive qualities there, personally I think he’s been playing too deep the last two league games and we could do with him and Erhahon rotating a bit more in going forward.

Think he plays the holding role well, but not in the traditional sense I guess. More moving the ball quicker, etc.

After all the stomping around with Magennis being sold, are we a better team for it by “replacing” him with JDH?

All this chat about 'fans' wanting Goodwin to get his pansy-potters are insane.

I don’t think there are lots of shouts about him to go, but a lot starting to get a bit fed up and question tactics, justifiably so.

Thinking back, we started the season reasonably well and with a back 4. First time we went to a 3 was in Perth and it wasn’t pretty, went between the two and seem to have settled on a 3. He just can’t seem to get the balance right, and perhaps that’s the concerning bit.
