  1. The positives were that we won and we put a few nice moves together, including both goals, but otherwise it wasn't a great performance. The formation didn't really work and the lack of width meant players were turning inside and playing it back too often.

Inverness were decent and pressed us well but didn't really create many clear cut chances until the goal, which made it an uncomfortable finish.

Tricky game, this, so we'll have to be as close to full strength as possible.

No Ginelly for us, and it may still be too soon for Naismith and Haring to start games, but maybe not.

    Gordon

    Smith - Halkett - Popescu - Kingsley

    Lee - Halliday - Irving

    Walker

    Wighton -  Boyce

Subs: Stewart, Brandon, Haring, White, Naismith, Henderson, Moore.

I agree that our current options mean we'll go with the midfield diamond, and although it worked in the second halves against Dundee and Hibs, it remains to be seen how effective it'll be against a team that will probably sit in. Not ideal given that Neilson made a big thing of building the squad around width and pace in pre-season.

I'd expect Haring and Naismith to start in place of Irving and Walker. I'm sure Neilson has said they'll each start one of the games against Inverness/East Fife and I doubt it'll be the one on the plastic pitch. Walker is also carrying a knock I think.

I'm expecting this game to be a bit of a comedown from the semi-final. 1-0 Hearts (bald Wighton).

I’m not sure I am quite as confident that Trump is out of this as the media seems to be. Still massively close.

Trump's chances of winning one of the close races are reasonable, but his chances of winning the three he needs are very slim.

According to those in the know, Trump's lead in Pennsylvania isn't enough to make up for the outstanding votes. Even if it is, Biden only needs Nevada (where he is heavy favourite) and Arizona (which looks like it'll be close, but which some have already called in his favour).

That's without mentioning Georgia, where some have Biden as slight favourite. If Trump loses that then he's almost certainly done.

We missed two absolutely golden opportunities as well and if Nisbet had scored the penalty we'd have been sitting here moaning about them.  It was incredibly tight stuff.

Yeah, the chances Wighton and Boyce missed in the second half were two of the best in the game. I do think that Hibs looked the more dangerous team by a fair margin up until Haring and Naismith came on, but it was much more even after that.  I think we missed having a fast, direct player like Ginnelly, particularly in the first half.

I think we'll win this 5-1. (If a Hibs season ticket holder referees it, fails to send off a Hibs player for a brutal assault on Naismith  5 minutes into the game to set the tone, awards a penalty to Hibs for a tackle 5 yards outside the box, sends off the offending  Hearts player despite it not being a clear goal scoring opportunity.) If not,  2-0 Hibees.

Imagine you'd posted this before your team scored an offside goal and dived for a penalty but still fucked it.

  6. Zaliukas made his debut in a pre-season friendly against Osasuna in 2006, coming on as a substitute. Despite being one of many Lithuanians arriving at the time, I distinctly remember he made such an impression at defensive midfield that some people concluded that "the number 26" was the worst Hearts player they'd seen. I don't think his early league appearances did much to change people's minds either.

It's fair to say there wasn't a lot of goodwill from the fans towards the Lithuanian players at the time, but to go from being singled out as the worst of the "faceless cast of thousands" to become the player he did and to captain the club on its greatest ever day is testament to his character. What a man.

This is absolutely gutting news. RIP you big, mad b*****d.

We've played 4 at the back against Inverness, Cowdenbeath, Raith & Dundee.  Can't see why we'd deviate from that before the semi tbh.  We will stick with what we have been working on in the previous games surely?  We need the players to be as used to as system as possible with only two league games under our belt.

We played 3-5-2 v Raith to be fair, although we changed it in the second half. We also used it a couple of times in pre-season IIRC, so it seems Neilson has (or had) some intention to use it at some point.

I'd agree that 4-2-3-1 suits the players better, though, and I'd expect us to continue with it.

They'll need multiple games to be close to their best, I just can't see Robbie rushing it.

Most people didn't expect Haring to play 90 against Raith, or for Boyce or Smith to start against Dundee, but Neilson knew the importance of that game and was always going to play the strongest possible team he possibly could. He'll also know the importance of the Hibs game for his relationship with the fans and I'll be very surprised if we don't start with anyone who can put a foot in in midfield, even if they can only play 60/70 minutes. Halliday especially, since he should be in a similar position fitness-wise to Kingsley.

  9. 1 hour ago, Tony Wonder said:

With the fact we have Hibs the week after and there being next to no chance of Haring and Halliday being fully match fit for that game, I think we'll stick with Lee and Irving tbh and try to get everyone firing for the cup game.

And while he'll probably not start, I expect to see Naismith get a good run out for the same reason.

We'll need those two to be as match fit as possible for Hibs. Irving and Lee is not an acceptable midfield pairing against a half-decent team because they'll punish us for being as soft-centred as we were the other night.

  10. I can't quite remember where Arbroath sit on the Backstabbers and Traitors Index, so I'll just assume that we absolutely despise these c***s.

Anyway, I hate playing teams that have just taken a doing because it feels like they usually tighten up and get a result in their next game. Arbroath surely won't play into our hands like Dundee did, but we need to start the game with the same pace and intensity as we did last night. If we play like we did last week against Cowdenbeath when they parked the bus and we just slowly moved the ball from side to side then we'll struggle big time.

Haring and Halliday in from the start hopefully.

    Gordon

    Smith Halkett Popescu Kingsley

    Haring Halliday

    Ginnelly Walker Roberts

    Boyce

Just chuck a couple of games against unfancied (ok, the more unfancied) opposition like Queen of the South and Alloa.

Have one game where you get a couple of players sent off for a laugh.

I've seen enough laughable incompetence from Heart of Midlothian over the last two years to know any of these scenarios are entirely possible without any deliberate action on our part.

As almost all of us said, numerous times, Hearts will almost certainly win the league pretty easily and will score a good amount of goals doing so.

Yet somehow many of the Hearts support will still be furious at this and will insist that every single victory is some sort of 'karma' and 'revenge', instead of the same meritocracy that deservedly saw them relegated last season.

Unfortunately we've had to do all this before in the recent past, so we might as well come up with some way to make it interesting this time.

Nobody gives a shit why Dundee changed their vote. All that matters is:
    1) They are snakey b*****ds and we hate them, and
    2) We absolutely fisted them last night.
    "Thank you".

    Still raging,pleasing.

I'd be considerably more raging if I'd just seen my team get completely demolished by the bad guys on the first day of the season. Especially if they were "there for the taking". greggy.png&key=7f8775ddacdfc6ac2f82b53a0

Hearts made 10 changes from their last League cup team. Difficult to compare really.

It was only four changes compared to the ICT game to be fair, although Kingsley, Smith and Boyce for White, Brandon and Wighton is a fairly significant upgrade. Roberts for Naismith is less so, but we looked much more balanced with a winger on the left rather than an empty space and Naismith and Walker treading each other's toes trying to play number 10.

The midfield pairing of Irving and Lee didn't really work in either game, and I'd expect those two to be replaced by Haring and Halliday soon enough.

I've no idea why fans of another team would find it a 'sheer tragedy' that hearts fans would be in a hearts match thread pleased about their win. It's literally the point of this forum to discuss football matters and gloat a bit when things go well.

"I came on here to praise a gloating tweet but had to withdraw my praise after I found gloating posts" is a strange take indeed, but not that surprising given the source.

  16. Good to see that a backline containing Jordan McGhee and Jordon Forster with Jack Hamilton in goal is exactly as shite as you'd expect. The first half was an absolute doing.

My concern before the game was that a midfield of Adam and Dorrans should be pretty strong and we didn't really have anyone to put a foot in in that area. That was exposed for Adam's goal and we looked ropey when Dundee changed to the diamond in the second half. Funnily enough, Neilson set his team up pretty similarly last time we were in the Championship and, by miles, the biggest problem we had was with Hibs' midfield diamond. I'd imagine it'd have been a closer game if they'd set up like that from the start, but as soon as we made the subs and matched them up we took control of the game again.

    Call the league now IMO.
