No the last time Hibs had a sustained period of supremacy Turnbull’s Tornados finished above hearts consistently during their 12 match streak

Curiously the all conquering Post war Hibs side lost all the derbies in their league winning seasons

Turnbull's Tornadoes eh? I think I'll stand by my assertion that Hibs 2015-17 derby form was the best they've done against us in f**k knows how long.

This is exactly the point I'm making. It obviously matters to both sets of supporters, but the attitudes from boardroom to pitch have been vastly different over the years.

True, when Hearts have a superior side, they tend to dominate. When Hibs have the better side, results tend to be pretty even. Which suggests it means more to one particular side.

Did Hibs most successful run of derbies in f**k knows how long not come at a time when we a) finished absolutely miles ahead of them in the Championship and b) spent two subsequent seasons in the division above?

  3. The St Mirren game call-off might well have saved our season. Whatever Stendel's been doing in training (rope and goggles lol) has worked as we've looked solid as f**k at the back in the last two games. Dikamona has been excellent since coming in and Smith makes us so much more secure in there.

There weren't any failures in the team but I thought Washington was excellent again. Always makes intelligent runs and works hard. I was going to comment that he's a very good player for a striker who never scores but then he rammed in the third. Smug

Nothing new being said here, but Hibs were absolutely fucking rank. This had the feel of one of those early 2010s derbies where we just turned up and ragdolled them with ease. The bad news is they surely can't play as badly as that in the Semi.

  4. Normally this would be the biggest game of the season so far but right now it just feels like a bit of a nuisance, given the circumstances.

The worst possible outcome would be a draw, resulting in an unwinnable replay at Ibrox at the expense of postponing important games which are actually important.

Not to worry, we'll probably get humped anyway.

  5. St Mirren didn't look any good in their two games against us and the 5-2 win in November was the worst opposition performance we've faced this season, but they seem much harder to beat now. Before today I actually thought Ross County were more catchable so that result at Pittodrie was a bit annoying. They'll finish 10th.

Hamilton also seem to have something about them from what I've seen but they have a leakier defence than St Mirren. Their failure to pick up points from winnable-looking games each week never fails to surprise me, so they're the only team giving me a bit hope.

I reckon we have more goalscoring potential than the other two but we're a big, nervy, confused mess at the back. If we don't sort that out soon then we're stick-ons for 12th.

  6. We have broadly the same squad that had us top of the league in November last season.

    Zlámal

    Smith Souttar Dunne Garuccio

    Morrison Haring Lee Naismith

    MacLean Ikpeazu

Aside from Haring (injured), Lee (loaned out) and Dunne (gone) the same options are still available to us. We've also added Halkett, Walker, Washington and Boyce.

As much as it's a mystery that that starting XI had us doing so well, our problems this season run much deeper than the quality of the squad.

Killie to be 6th at the split for me, Hibs are coming to the bottom half for the bants.

An old Hibby uni mate said this to me yesterday, wants to wave them bye bye as they relegate them. Harsh but I'd take it if we sneaked into the top six.

This is something that has worked out very well for them in the past, of course.

You are, I'd be amazed if your rate of conceding isnt much, much higher per game now than it was under Levein.

Statistically St Johnstone have the worst performing keeper in the league, yet have a manager competent enough to build a side who can prevent teams scoring and give themselves a chance of winning. Stendel has you shipping about 2/3 goals a game, you're never going to win games regularly like that.

It's bad management, and it's just daft to pin that entirely on a goalkeeper/defence/previous manager, who weren't having the same issues before Stendel was appointed.

You can now directly compare Leveins 11 games this season to Stendels.

Levein has 1 win, 5 losses, 10 goals scored, 15 goals conceded, 8 points.

Stendel has 1 win, 6 losses, 14 goals scored, 21 goals conceded, 7 points.

Theres only so much blame you can shift away from Stendel surely? He signed multiple players he apparently targeted and got his main target in Boyce, and also has Souttar/Naismith/Washington to play with where Levein didnt.

There's something in what you're saying, but Levein most definitely was having the same issues. The result against Hamilton yesterday was the same as the one Levein got earlier in the season and featured similarly calamitous defending. The Motherwell and Ross County home games were also very similar performances. He did respond to this and tightened us up at the back in his last few matches but it came at the expense of losing all attacking threat - we scored one goal in his last five and barely threatened to at any point. When MacPhee came in it was back to horrific defending (13 goals conceded v Rangers X2, Killie and St Mirren).

It's also not really true to say that their records can be definitively compared because they've had the same number of games, given that they comprised different fixtures. Since Levein got the full first round of games and we're now into the third round of games, we can compare like-for-like fixtures, though. In the games v Rangers (h), St Johnstone (a), Killie (h), Celtic (a) and Hamilton (h), Levein got 2 points and Stendel 5. Both shite returns and it's a small sample, but Stendel does better on that measure.

I agree that our current defensive set-up isn't sustainable if we want to actually stay up, though, and it's Stendel's responsibility to address that. Despite all our problems, getting relegated with this squad would be inexcusable.

  9. Deary fucking me. We're fucked. We just don't have it in us to win these games.

I think every Hearts fan desperately wants Stendel to be a success but there was also a nagging feeling it wasn't the right time for this kind of appointment. So far, he hasn't improved us at all.

I think some are forgetting that our defence was horrendous under Levein as well, though. Check out the highlights from the Ross County/Hamilton/Motherwell home games from earlier in the season if you've forgotten. We just have a shit defence, Halkett has been a big disappointment and Souttar has looked a shadow of the player he was in 2018 since returning. Our full-backs, Smith aside, are very poor defenders as well.

                           Boyce

Subs:GK, Dikamona, Irving, Meshino, Uche, McDonald, Washington/Avidjaj

Big fan of Irving, but if Smith and Sibbick are fit get them both in, but Hamilton will make it a scrap so we need to win the battle and get it forward to the front 4.

This would be the best line-up we've put out all season. No pissing about with Moore or Henderson tomorrow please.

You huffed and puffed against them for 50 odd mins too and I would expect them to end up well behind us and raith in league one.  I 'm not overly surprised mind you considering you've had to start players like moore and Irving that couldn't get games for some of the worst falkirk sides ever assembled.

We won 5-0. Try and spin that whatever way you like.

Lewis Moore's three league appearances this season have been puzzling but thankfully we are nowhere near "having" to start him. The jury is out on Irving, but he does at least have some ability and has clearly improved this season compared to his prior appearances for us.

We deservedly beat Rangers a couple of weeks ago. Maybe that means there's no gap between us. Or maybe it was a big match at home where we raised our game and they weren't as up for it.

  12. 3-5-2 didn't work and, as Stendel said after the game, we had too many players behind the ball. Dikamona was massively uncomfortable as the LCB and gave it away constantly.

Garuccio is just rubbish, has little positional awareness and his dreadful attempts to control the ball under no pressure never fail to surprise me. There was a moment in the first half where Irving had the ball in the left corner of our box and was clearly looking for Garuccio running into the space ahead on the left. Instead, Garuccio held back behind Irving and, upon receiving the ball, just launched it into the empty space ahead of him where he should have been. I wouldn't be surprised or disappointed if that's his last game for us.

Naismith looked fucked and needs a rest. We looked better when Walker replaced him.

As for the others, Pereira was still dodgy as f**k despite not having a save to make, Clare and Smith were good, Boyce was ok and Langer was neat and tidy despite not doing a huge amount. Everyone else was meh.

Also, as much as last night's performance was rubbish and didn't inspire any confidence that we'll survive this season, maybe it's best not to get too excited based on a one-off cup tie. The "gap" looked pretty big when we beat Airdrie 5-0 in the last round.
