  1. Pereira in goals. In this weather.

No idea what Gomis is like these days but 5 years ago he really struggled against teams that pressed us in midfield. That might be something we can take advantage of. Although I say that as if this game is going to be anything other than a complete clusterfuck.

  2. After an obvious improvement recently, the second half on Saturday was a step backwards. Despite not necessarily creating loads of chances, we've definitely got more goals in us now, but we're still leaving gaps at the back and our keepers are all fucking idiots.

This is the first time we've played a bottom half team at home since Stendel's first game, so I'm not really sure what to expect. The gameplan worked against Aberdeen and Rangers but I'd imagine Killie will be more content to sit in and hit us on the break.

I know Meshino was rubbish on Saturday and Avdijaj didn't show much in his brief appearance, but we'll need a bit of creativity in the team so I'd like at least one of them to start alongside Boyce, Naismith and Washington. Unfortunately it sounds like this game's come too soon for Smith so we'll probably have to go with the same back four and midfield two. f**k trying to pick a keeper.

I'll go for a narrow home win, but if we repeat the second half performance on Saturday we'll be beaten by a couple.

  3. Watching the highlights back, Pereira had an even worse game than I remember. Why the f**k is he standing outside the width of the posts at their first goal? His attempt to stop the second is also atrocious, as was his bizarre, dramatic save for May's 40-yarder, which should have been an easy catch. I think a large part of our performance in the second half was down to him causing panic and indecision in the defence.

Aside from Pereira's pathetic attempt to save it, St Johnstone's second goal was just such a daft goal to concede in general. Boyce had just gone off for treatment and instead of just keeping it tight for a minute, Clare pushes right up to the edge of their box to receive a pass, which is inevitably misplaced. Once it's played forward, Halkett is dragged out wide to cover Clare, leaving a huge space in the middle for McCann. f**k knows where our CMs are at this point, because Naismith is the closest player chasing McCann down. It was just so needless at a time we were temporarily down by a man.

Just to add to this, this is the current "mini table" for bottom half sides.

Obviously each team will end this table on 15 games by the time we reach the split.

    Horrific reading.

For better or worse, we're a different proposition now, though. A home game on Wednesday against a team which will probably try to sit in and hit us on the break will give us a good idea of how the rest of the season's going to go, with five similar games to come after that.

  5. Just having a look at the permutations for the post-split fixtures. Assuming the bottom six stays as is, Hearts, Ross County and St Mirren are all due 3 home games and Hamilton, St Johnstone and Kilmarnock are due 2.

In all likelihood, this would result in:

    • Hamilton going to Ross County for a third time,
    • Hamilton also going to St Mirren for a third time,
    • Kilmarnock going to Hearts for a third time.

In practice, this means Hamilton only have 6 home games left, and only 3 against the rest of the bottom 6. They seem to pick up more points at home, so that could be a bit of a disadvantage for them.

Hearts, by contrast, still have 7 home games left, with 6 being against bottom 6 sides. Our record in these games this season so far is absolute shite, so changing that is the key for us.

About the same as we managed at Tynecastle. Not sure its fair to judge them after three months of this manager. They're still getting used to his system, once it clicks they'll rip the league apart...

December the 10th was three months ago, aye?

The system most certainly didn't work today, though, and we deserved to get pumped for that second half. A point was absolute robbery.

Surprisingly, Stendel's Barnsley team had the best defensive record in League One last season. Maybe they had good defenders.

Exciting still to be involved in transfer activity this close to the end of the window - if Levein was still coach, he'd have had the media team put out a message that there would be no business done today - the boring b*****d.

Instead we're announcing the arrival of mean looking Germans with bad haircuts. and still negotiating potential deals in and out.

You've completely jinxed this. A German 4th division utility man in and a briefing to Brian McLaughlin that we're done at 8pm it is.

  8. It would be very typical of Hearts to follow up a brilliant home win with an insipid away performance. Fortunately, because of that win, a draw in this game, if a bit disappointing, is no longer a bad result if we can get it.

Posting a team line-up is even more pointless than it usually is because I'd imagine we'll add 2/3 new players to the squad this week, but:

    Pereira

    Smith Souttar Halkett White

    Sibbick Irving

    Washington Naismith Avdijaj

    Boyce

Subs: Zlamal, Dikamona, Clare, Walker, Meshino, Henderson, Ikpeazu.

Dropping Clare would be very harsh, and I'll be surprised if Stendel does, but Smith is still one of our best players and Sibbick's arrival means he's no longer essential to the midfield. White played well yesterday, so I'd be inclined to keep him in at left-back. That front four, if it clicks, is potentially very exciting, although I also wouldn't be surprised to see Henderson keeping his place.

TBF to me, pre-Boyce Hearts are far worse than post-Boyce Hearts. He's going to save you.

It's not just Boyce, we've got several players who weren't here or weren't available in the last few months of the year, as well as a new manager who's now had time to work with the players. We're by no means out of the woods yet, but 5 points really wasn't the insurmountable gap it was made out to be.

Hearts fans are remarkably confident considering they're 5 points adrift with less than half a season to play, their new manager hasnt won any of his first 5 games, and theyve absolutely zero idea who theyll be signing in the window.

8 days ago there was no gap at the bottom and now it's 5 points. These situations can be reversed as quickly as they happened in the first place.

2 games later, the gap is now 1 point and we're as close to 7th as we were to 11th. ^A smart man.
