Dont think I've seen Hearts since we beat them at Tynecastle, but doesnt seem like Stendel has learned much.

Still handing the opposition an easy ball into the 30 yard gap they leave in front of their own goal, and it's still creating chances for opposition teams.

I understand that's his whole thing, but surely if it's not working with the player you have, then you try and change something to resolve that?

We're not playing the system perfectly, but it's a trade-off. We're more vulnerable on the counter, but we're also pinning Rangers back in their own half, meaning they haven't had any periods of sustained pressure. We need to be able to adapt our style as the game goes on and players tire, though, so it'll be interesting to see if we can.

  2. Good to see Boyce, but a weird, weird selection otherwise. Moore and Henderson? Why? I know they did fairly well against Airdrie but I'd be surprised if they make any impact here. The midfield in general looks light, which seems like a mistake.

White starting and no defenders among the subs is also a concern. I assume Garuccio is injured.

On the plus side, our attacking options on the bench look good.

  3. Rangers are very strong in midfield and we can't afford to be as open as we (apparently) were against Ross County, so as much as it's tempting to stick all our attacking players in at the expense of our dross CMs, I think we'll go with three in the middle of the park.

Assuming Smith and Hickey are still out:

    Pereira

    Clare Souttar Halkett Garuccio

    Bozanic Sibbick Irving

    Washington Naismith Avdijaj

Subs: Zlámal, Dikamona, White, Damour, Meshino, Ikpeazu, Boyce.

We still give up too many chances, so the most likely outcome is a pumping. Thankfully the Hamilton result yesterday has eased the pressure a bit and anything we get here is a bonus.

Tbf I'd not take Daly's word on anything, came across like he could barely find his way to Riccarton.  Some actual updates would be good though seeing as he was back running in December then disappeared again.

He was back running in autumn but was still experiencing pain when striking the ball, so he had another operation at the end of November.

Toby, being short for Tobias - a popular Jewish name that literally translates to “God is good” in Hebrew. So it stands to reason why so many of our Jambo chums are displaying such undue distaste towards it.

I just hope the Hearts singing section are wrong about Stendelbottom, otherwise the poor boy is in for a torrid time at Tynecastle.

It's actually a Greek name translated from Hebrew, much like Michael or Jesus or uh... Daniel, as well as countless others. That doesn't make it a "Jewish" name. So as well as this being shite patter, it's also wrong.greggy.png

I could get behind a midfield enforcer call Tobias, by the way.quitegood.png

Oh dear. By the look of those proposed signings, Hearts have now realised their place in the natural order. I'm a st Mirren fan, and I'd be gutted if we signed some of the players mentioned.

You never know though, perhaps £2.5 million Liam Lindsay will leave Stoke in the championship, where he is a regular, for you or maybe Liam Boyce fancies a season in the Scottish championship 😄

SHREE YEAR DEAL. Probably another Sutton.

I'm somewhere between being delighted if it happens and feeling it has strong Billy McKay signing for Dundee United before they went down vibes or that his knee will explode on his debut like it did at Burton.

Boyce, Naismith, Avdijaj, Washington, Meshino and Walker is a far better set of attacking options than we've had at any point this season, though. Most of the time we'v only had Meshino available out of those so far. I wouldn't say no to another winger on top of that, but I'd say defence and midfield are the priorities now.

Interesting that the article says we're trying to get him in before Sunday but I can't see this one being tied up quickly. Other teams will jump in now and he'll probably want to wait til the end of the window to see what other offers he's got. If Hibs/Aberdeen sell Cosgrove/Kamberi then they'll be in for him too and will have a bit to spend.

@DC92You have 6 matches left against top 6 opposition pre split, or are you just discounting the Celtic, Rangers as dead rubbers?

    Dead rubbers.

You only have 9 games left against bottom half sides, including the split. So theres only a possible 27 left from that route.

Nope. We've still got Killie, Hamilton and Ross County at home and St Mirren And St Johnstone away before the split. That's 5 pre-split and 5 after.

In fact, what I was wrong about is we have 6 at home to the bottom 6 and 4 away because we'll be due 3 home games after the split.

    So, to amend it:

13/18 at home to bottom 6.

    7/12 away to bottom 6.

    4/18 against the top 6.

The teams above you will win games before the end of the season aswell.

Which is why I set a points target based on a likely number to avoid relegation based on all previous seasons.

Your logic relies on Hearts going from 1 win in their last 16 games, to 7 wins in 16. From 9 losses in the last 16, to 5.

You win all 4 February games, you're left needing to get around 10 points from around 10 games.

We're discussing scenarios whereby Hearts survive and the scenario I've put forward is far likelier to happen than the one you did. I didn't pass any comment on whether we would achieve it or not.

Obviously if we repeat the same form we've had over the season so far then we'll go down. There wouldn't be any point debating anything.

24pts from 16 games, over the last 16 games, is what the 4th best team in the league had over that time.

You're forgetting that the dynamics of the split mean that we'll have a very disproportionate number of games against the weaker teams in the league. Two thirds of our games are against bottom 6 teams, and over a third are at home to those sides. In the season so far, most of our games have been against the top 6.

Bottom 6 teams usually pick up more points in the second half of the season because of this. For Hamilton to reach 38 points for example, they need another 20 points in 16 games even though they've only got 18 in 22 so far. Similar can be said for St Mirren And St Johnstone. You don't seem to think that's wildly unrealistic.

The point about only being 4 points behind is entirely valid, by the way. If we take 4 points off Hamilton and then better their other results by 1/2 points then we will finish above them. It's as simple as that, but you're tying yourself in knots trying to come up with convoluted explanations as to why we're already doomed.

You simply have to win all four games against teams around you in February.

We really don't. Since the move to the current league structure in 2000, the highest number of points the bottom side has managed is 37, so let's say for argument's sake that we need another 24 points to at least finish 11th.

    If we get something like:

12/15 at home to the bottom 6

8/15 away to the bottom 6

    4/12 against Aberdeen/Motherwell/Hibs/Livi

we will almost certainly avoid 12th and likely 11th as well. That's nowhere near a given, but it's just not true to say we have to win every game against the teams around us.
