  1. It was the Journal itself that raised the topic. I know square posts were only banned in 1987 by FIFA. For some strange reason, square posts were more popular in Scotland than anywhere else.
  2. Forward to 1983 and it was Junior Cup semi-final day, with the long trip to Kilmarnock to face Auchinleck Talbot. Obviously the underdogs, playing on Talbot's doorstep, the BU's pulled off a magnificent 1-0 win, courtesy of a Frank 'Doodles' Wilson goal. The team was: Kirkwood, Dunleavie, Breen, Robertson (Wilson), Forster, Wilkes, Shields, Balanowski, Beaton (Dunn), Miller, Reid
  3. Today in 2006, which future BU player lined up for Whitburn against us?
  4. To complete a hat-trick of Fauldhouse matches, we now go to 1950 and a Brown Cup semi-final held a Bathgate. The BU's were deserved winners by 4-1 through doubles from Willie Gardiner & Robert Balderston. The main talking point was the goal-posts, however! No fewer than six shots by the BU's came back off the square posts, generating talk of replacing with the rounded variety we know today. The team was: Graham, Mitchell, Tennant, Hogg, Thomson, McKie, Morrison, Dick, Gardiner, Sproull, Balderston
  5. Afraid not. Think the scorer has a sister Elsie in Edinburgh.
  6. Back to 2001 for a teaser and who was the scorer in a 1-0 win over Edinburgh United?
  7. In 1984, Fauldhouse United lined up in a 6th round replay in the Junior Cup. This was an away tie but was played at Armadale. Predictably, this was a close match and the BU's eventually triumphed 2-1. Tommy Caldwell and Brian Fairley hit the goals as the BU's marched into the semi's. The team was: Kirkwood, Dunleavie, Breen, Carroll, Caldwell, Reid, Shields, Beaton, Sinnet, Fairley, Wilson
  8. Now for a first, a Bo'ness defeat. However it was the first final the club had reached in their first season, 45/46. The competition was the East of Scotland Cup, the venue Tynecastle and the opponents Fauldhouse United. That the BU's lost 2-0 can be put into perspective by the fact that the 'hoose were almost invincible that season, winning the League whilst being unbeaten and lifting 4 cups including the prized Junior Cup. A crowd of 14,609 saw the BU's go down fighting and had a Hamilton goal chalked off, dubiously, for off-side. The team was: P McKinnon, Archibald, Gibb, Gardner, Smart, Brash, McGowan, Pryde, Hamilton, Leask, McLean.
  9. No, though the scorer did appear in the recent testimonial for Chris Donnelly.
  10. You're close with the number, it was actually 8 but not the scorer.
  11. Two part teaser for today. Harking back to Championship season 13/14, we travelled to Newtongrange on this day and won 1-0. Who got the goal and what number jersey was Ross Campbell wearing that day? (inspired by his two numbers on Wednesday there).
  12. Into 1978 now and the BU's completed a League double over Linlithgow Rose, this time by 4-2 at Newtown. The headlines said 'Eddie shoots down Rose!'. The Bu's came back from 2-1 down at half-time to blitz the Rose in the 2nd 45. Brian Eddie was the star with a hat-trick and Ian Miller grabbed the other. Almost complete team of Ferguson, McNulty, Stewart, McQueen, Breen, Miller, Dunleavie, Balanowski, Craw, Eddie
  13. This day in 1953 saw a semi-final replay in the St Michaels Cup, against Newtongrange Star, at neutral Prestonfield. The first game had finished 1-1 at Arniston but the replay was settled by a double from Alec Ross, as the BU's won 2-0 The team was: Ronald, Mitchell, McKeeman, Hogg, McBlain, Paterson, McAra, Simpson, Grieve, Ross, Ormond
  14. Back to 1993 for a teaser and I'm looking for the hat-trick hero in a 6-0 demolition of West Calder.
  15. 2010 saw the BU's closing in on the title but the match at Kelty Hearts was never going to be easy. Kelty had been the first team to beat the BU's in a League match that season in the reverse fixture and the BU's were coming off a 3-0 loss at Hill of Beath. Not surprisingly, it was a tight game and an early Andy Shirra goal wrapped up the points, 1-0 The side was: Longmuir, Snowdon, Fleming, Forrest, Duffin, Hay, Ballantine (Donnelly), Shirra, McFadyen (Shields), Gribben, Walker (G Brown)
  16. Scott left for Rangers in the middle of the season having scored 23 goals in 26 games. Harrower played the full season, had 45 appearances scoring 38 goals. He played all along the front line so wasn't exclusively the centre.
  17. Having checked, he began the 53/4 season at Sauchie Thistle, then in May of 1954 played a couple of trial games and was snapped up. In 7 games at the end of that season he scored 6 goals and won two cup finals. Not a bad start!
