  1. Tapering might be useful for the longer races but dont usually bother with it for 10k. It really depends on your fitness level and whether or not you are following a specific training plan.
  2. Agreed the runners world time calculator has you at sub 1hr 25 for the half marathon on that 10k time. http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/general/rws-race-time-predictor/1681.html
  3. You still go over the Kingston bridge on the GSR
  4. I dont think that is strictly true the commonwealth marathon route takes in some of the GSR route but also includes pollok park and doesnt look like it goes over the kingston bridge. The reason they changed the GSR route was to make it faster to attract better elite athletes hence dropping the Pollok park element Links Marathon route - http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Resource/0042/00422555.pdf GSR Route - http://www.greatscottishrun.com/TheEvent/thecourse.aspx I had hoped the would do a test of the marathon route prior to the games but that seems unlikely now.
  5. I have done the Cumbernauld 10k couple of times. Not the most pictuesque course and there is a decent sized hill half way round and a climb back up to broadwood from the loch. Well organised and decent enough training run ahead of the GSR. Scored my 10k PB there last year but my Garmin had the course 200m short. EDIT - Link to Last years chat http://www.pieandbovril.com/forum/index.php/topic/75234-pb-running-club/?p=6612788
  6. I too have suffered the indignity of the nipple stigmata on a white top. Best to view it as a badge of pride - especially when you are weeping in the shower as the water send stinging electric bolts through your body. I put plasters or micropore tape over my nips now.

    The Wire

Frank Sobotka is a great character
  8. It was hotter than i expected yesterday for my long slow run. Was really tough going got a little sun "blushed" and my core temperature was through the roof the rest of the day.
  9. mile intervals this morning - was dreading as I thought my speed over that kind of distance would be awful. Managed a 6.10, 6.20 and 6.30 (last one) and I probably could have pushed a bit harder on the last one. Not as fast as I was but a hell of a lot closer than I thought I was.
  10. I got one last year when it was a fiver. it's ok if you usually train/run in sports tops.
  11. Have you up the training significantly in the last few weeks? (either distance or runs?) - Could be your IT band but best to get yourself check out by a physio if it persists.
  12. I got a flyer throught the post the other day. 6k , 12k and 18k events (which is either 1,2 or 3 laps of the loch). 1st September - works well for me and I will probably sign up of the 3 laps.
  13. Yeah - saw it posted on here. The removal of my least favourite part of the route through pollok park is a bonus
  14. I have put on a stone and my work suits are too tight to be comfortable. I may do the glasgow half but the new date isn't great for me.
  15. Try this http://scottishrunningguide.com/race_listings.php The jog scotland website also has an events page and finally this http://www.halfmarathonlist.co.uk/scottish-half-marathons.php
  16. This thread has kept me entertain for the last 10 minutes or so. Thank you Connie, SJC, the ghost of British Patriot and Mhak. To the sundry others have made valuable but less noteworthy contributions I say "Ahoy!"
  17. Managed the hill runs this morning but barfed after hill 6.
  18. Another one coming back after a lay off. Mine was a result of being a lazy b*****d though. First run this morning easy pace 5k with some core strengthening exercises afterwards. Hills runs planned for tomorrow - that will be a challenge.

    Hannibal

Watch the first episode last night and I thought it was excellent. I found it gripping and thought it was styled beautifully. Stu - judging by the first episode, Will Graham is a FBI investigator with on the autistic spectrum, bit of genius and has a great skill in terms of deduction. Hannibal Lecter is a physco-analyst brought in by the FBI to assess Graham. I looks like Lecter will be probing and prodding Graham to try an break him and he is a physcopath as well. The key dynamic will be the interaction between the cool, clam Lecter and the edgy, socially disfunctional Graham with ulitmately Lecter getting caught.
  20. It depends on what you ultimately want to do. If you want to run further e.g. 10km then gradually increase your distance or if you want to go quicker over the 5k start to add in intervals or hill runs. Speedwork is good whatever distance you are looking to cover so it might be an idea to try and add something in once a week If you are just running on a treadmill remember that it is harder to run outside and you wont necessarily be as quick.
  21. Shin Splints is a bit of catch-all for loads of different things. If it is giving you real bother see a physio
  22. Use one of the 10k training programmes from this guy http://www.halhigdon.com/ helped me get my 10k time down to 38 minutes 30 secs last year
  23. I agree with TM on the marathon - 16 weeks at a minimum would probably get you round. As for the 10k it depends on what you are looking to do and how fit you are in terms of your base fitness. If you are reasonably fit you should be able to get a decent time after a 12 week programme.
  24. You can use a marathon time calculator to base the estimate marathon time based on recent runs http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/general/rws-race-time-predictor/1681.html
