What about Gabby on sat would you have replaced him, exactly what did he bring to te game,

Yeh he was definitely the correct substitution for Jamieson although could argued that his replacement didn't contribute either.

There were some good performances yesterday, Ballantyne was having his best game until injury struck, Telfer, Smith and Gallagher were also great.

What can you even say about the defending at this point? Riley a complete disaster. McCabe’s backwards header lays the equaliser on a plate. Watson pathetic for the penalty and corner. And Lyness and Fordyce as dreadful as always at the corner for the 4th.

A real indictment of McCabe’s coaching, shape and game management that this nonsense is still happening every week. What is going to change things? New centre-halves? A proper coach with autonomy in the dugout and at training? Because this isn’t good enough and it’s a waste of all the talent that is in this team. To potentially not even reach the play-offs with Frizzell, Smith, Gal, Ballantyne, Rae, Telfer, McCabe and Fordyce in that squad is a disgrace and a waste of not only all that talent but the progress made on the park in the last few seasons. That, and then consequently losing all of those players is my biggest fear. Get to the play-offs and McCabe would deserve another crack at it but if we don’t then he has to go. But either way, without either new centre-halves and/or a defensive midfielder or a new coach, that team isn’t getting promoted.

I know Riley gets caught wrong side but that's a real soft penalty. No appeals from the Edinburgh players normally tells the story.

I thought your suggestion was that we could never win the league with our budget?

It's beginning to look like it i'm afraid as numerous attempts have proven although it's fair to say i never thought we could win it this season.

I just don’t think we can really blame any of our shortcomings on budget since it’s mismanagement from a rookie manager trying to do two jobs that’s the real issue. I‘d really like to see a new (non-playing) assistant manager brought in and Dycey returning to just player and captain to allow someone to manage from the dug out and Dycey to concentrate on his game.

So what was our budget then?

  4. Long post but I'm struggling to see what part of my post is nonsense as you seem to concur with the majority of it.

I agree McCabe should stay I've never said otherwise, quite the opposite.

Did you think we could win the league when the summer transfer window closed? I'm an optimist but reality suggested play offs.

Bigger budgets help, everyone agrees, you agree, although there are exceptions as you pointed out and i hope there is also one this season.

One other point that struck me during the Quitongo case was the £375 per week full time basic wage and whilst I've no doubt that wasn't or highest wage, it does let you know where we are. That's lucky to make the minimum living wage in Scotland.

Going to stay in this league a few years more, do you agree with that,

Of course not but we were never going to win the league this year as our budget is tiny in comparison with Falkirk & Dunfermline and our only hope is to sneak through in the play offs.

We're also not great with choosing managers, Wolecki Black, Findlay, Wilson and don't forget that it took Ian Murray 4 seasons to put together a decent side which ultimately failed.

Investment (or unearthing a couple of gems from the youth academy) is the route to getting out this league or getting lucky in the play offs.

Agree with this, thats why I think having gone down the McCabe route we need to back him medium term (unless there is a complete disaster in results)

    Couldn't agree more.

We've tried something different with him being younger than the normal player/managers with Rhys having so much of his playing career left, so we should give him a fair crack of the whip. We need to accept that mistakes will be made but i firmly believe that all managers need at least two summer transfer windows to mould a team.

The club structure and support for Rhys that many posters have commented on since his appointment is a real issue though.

    Another point of discussion is:

Has the Academy impacted our first team budget? Pros and cons with Academies but ultimately judged on bringing through and selling players for profit otherwise they're doomed. Tom Wotherspoon got his fingers badly burnt with a similar vision.

And amidst our disappointment yesterday it's noted that Queens Park are top of the Championship which highlights the fine lines in football!

January and we still can’t defend? Not fucking good enough. Cruising here and let them back into it through our own slackness.

    Fair do's.

Young RB clearly out of his depth and whilst i didn't think it was a penalty for Edinburgh's 1st, he he did got caught wrong side giving the ref a decision to make. and unfortunately fell apart after that. Having said that Watson made an equally bad mistake for the 2nd pen and Frizzell had his worst game ever in Airdrie strip

I'll repeat again, we need to sign players who walk straight into our 1st 11.

I wouldn't turn down improvements to the starting 11, clearly. However I don't really agree, I think our current position is down to lack of options from the bench and lack of options in the squad when injuries and suspensions have happened. In numerous games we've lost points because the opposition have had options to change the game and we haven't, and most of our dropped points came when Frizzell wasn't playing.

If we could add 3 or 4 players who are similar to the standard of our first 11 it would make a massive difference and we'd make the play-offs relatively comfortably.

I'd rather pool the wages of the 3 or 4 you mention and secure 2 Kerr McInroy types  as ultimately it will only be quality that gets us through the play offs.

I still believe that we would be a championship club just now if we hadn't lost McInroy last January.

Yes hope so, and  all  the best to fans and team, a wee bit experienced player to add to the 3 18years olds signed would be great and needed,

It looks like Prince & Riley were all but signed anyway but i wouldn't think they are serious contenders for the starting 11.

Seems to be a lot of Thistle fans saying nice things about Stanway but its fair to question his experience, which is virtually zero, but lets see him play. Again it's unlikely he will start tomorrow which is not the type of signing i was looking for.

We do have options but I think most people mean a specific kind of midfielder. Frizzell and Devenny are industrious and McCabe can put himself about at times but we do lack physicality in there, and with Easton’s technical ability away we probably need to be a bit more combative at times. I suppose we still need a Wylie replacement, although I reckon you could play and I’d offer just as much as he did.

Dropping Jamieson after he made such an impact in the last game against Montrose is a bold move. I’m not there tonight but interested to see how that midfield works too, as it never worked at all Kelty.

It's looking to me like Jamieson's loan period is ending.

Ah I see. I think ideally we should be bringing in at least a centre back and centre mid that improve the current starting 11, and a few more needed purely for numbers certainly.

I do think this January window is absolutely crucial to our hopes of securing a play off spot. (massive match tonight)

Interesting that you and most others suggest we need another centre mid. I don't disagree but there is probably more competition for this position than anywhere else in the side. (Frizzell, McCabe, Telfer, Devenny & McMaster)

Definitely 2 new signings at least to improve the outfield required and hopefully the returning Josh Rae strengthens the starting 11 as well.

A venue that the visiting side always seem to struggle to get a win at.

One thing this fixture does guarantee is goals. In the last 5 games between the two sides there has been a whopping 26 goals between them. Home side go into this having not won in their previous 5 games in all competition, whereas Airdrie have had only one defeat in the last 5 which was an extra time defeat to Dundee.

With only 3 points separating the teams a win would be massive for either side battling it out for the play offs and for Montrose it would create a 6 point gap. Not much separating the teams on Skybet with the home side slight favourites at 7/5 and Airdrie 8/5.

    For the line up I'd expect McCabe to go along the lines of this;

                              Lyness

    Ballantyne  Watson  Fordyce   E Deveney

                             McCabe

                        Telfer      Frizzell

                 LJ             Gal          Smith

Personally I'd start ATS over Fordyce as I don't think he's been fully at the races this season, and potentially Justin over Telfer for a bit more energy in midfield. Due to LJ phenomal scoring record against Montrose I would start him over McGill. Unless anything changes in the match preview, I think it will be too soon for Josh Rae to come in.

    Prediction - Montrose 2-2 Airdrie

Predicting a high scoring 2-2 draw to keep in line with the fixture that constantly produces goals.

On a side note, fair play to any Airdrie fan who makes the trip tonight, especially with it being a few days before Christmas.

Probably spot on with selection with the only concern being Frizz's fitness as he's unlikely to last the 90mins. Do we give him a good hour from the start or bring him on the last 30 mins or so?

I noticed that Montrose's bench last Saturday which included Ballantyne, Gardyne, Milne & Lyons, that's pretty strong at this level and something we currently don't have.

A proper holding midfielder, in the Marvyn Wilson or Martin Hardie mould, and another centre-half would be my priority. Both, but especially a holding midfielder would make a monumental difference to this team. Keeping or replacing Jamieson would also be a priority. I'd keep Salim around as we've seen this season how important it is to have at least SOMEBODY on the bench you can trust to bring on and maybe make a difference. I think he can only play for us or Stranraer in the SPFL for the rest of this season so it wouldn't surprise me if he stuck around (though it wouldn't surprise me if he left either). Another couple of players to fill out the bench would be ideal, maybe a proper winger.

I suppose it will depend on whether Stranraer want to keep him, he does offer something different but fitness looks a worry. Agree we need a centre half and a winger but i believe McCabe is our best option in the holding midfield role and it's more of a big energetic aggressive type we need.

We already have plenty bench fillers, Deveney, Telfer, Lyness, Henderson, ATS, McMaster, Gabby and possibly Sal.

  14. Well it's nearly transfer window time and it seems there are some rumours on the Bookface page that we could be very active. I'm not sure Sal will return as he doesn't seem to have made much of an impact at Stranraer and perhaps Jamieson may return to St Mirren. That would leave that would leave us short upfront which seems to be the most difficult position to fill at our level.

Anyway, as i always say, the players who come in have got to be first picks in our starting eleven otherwise it could be struggle to secure a top 4 finish.

He won’t, but he should. As an aside, I believe we’re unbeaten when one of either McCabe or Fordyce has been in the dugout this season. 5-0 v Clyde, 1-0 v Kelty and 1-1 v Falkirk. Probably just a coincidence but also something worth thinking about.

I suppose we could list the games we've won with Fordyce & McCabe in the team but it's meaningless. ATS is on a sharp downward spiral as borne out by the fact that he's never nailed down a regular start at any of his last 6 or so clubs.

I'll have Fordyce over him all day long but do think it's a position we need to strengthen.

I agree with everything @David Fernández says. We’ve pretty much been playing the same guys for 90 minutes every week since July so last weekend was probably a welcome rest, especially if it gets Frizzell, McGill and Rae closer to full fitness. I expect Frizzell to come in from the start with McMaster dropping out and maybe McGill in for Jamieson too. Assuming Rae isn’t fit then the only other big call is in defence. I’d keep ATS in as he strolled it against Falkirk and as much as it’s still confusing to say, he’s had a better season than Fordyce.

I’ve gone for a low scoring draw but as with pretty much all of our games, it genuinely could be anything. An early goal and some confidence and we could be flying and although we do tend to struggle when we concede first, we’ve done well to come from behind in our last two games, especially given they were away from home. Dunfermline seem a lot less unpredictable, which is why they’re so far ahead of us, so we’ll have to be at our best to get anything from this.

There is zero chance of ATS starting before Fordyce, if fit of course.

Oliver and Morrison must practice shooting together at training. Why he didn’t lay it off to Morrison either is beyond me. Anyway. IMO that’s 2 points dropped. We will not win the league missing this many scoring chances. I genuinely think Lawal would have buried that Oliver chance. Falkirk don’t ruin my Saturdays anymore, because I expect it.

Same, i couldn't believe that Smith didn't square it to Jamieson for a tap in around the 5 minute mark, LJ even looked more angry than he normally does!
