Arnaud Djoum being mentioned elsewhere, former Hearts midfielder. Positives: defensive midfielder, negatives: 33 year old who hasn’t played much recently. Don’t know if anything in it but you would sincerely hope the club are looking at potential free agents to fill the gaping hole in midfield.

I posted in this thread back in July that if we didn’t sign a defensive midfielder we would be in serious trouble and guess what. Saturday saw us lose yet another goal where the oppositions midfielder get a free shot from the edge of the box without any of our midfielders anyplace near them. Butcher had no future at the club after what happened but he would make a huge difference to this team at the moment with his dig and leadership in front of the defence. I think come the transfer window the club as well as addressing the obvious seriously need to look at bringing someone capable of being captain, as for as good as Edwards has been (not so much recently) he just seem to offer anything on the pitch as a captain, I can’t recall ever seeing him trying to rally the team when things are going against us. Despite Tony Watts Darren Jacksonesque promise, relegation is a serious possibility and a major concern.

Would like to see Anaku and Sibbald come in for Watt and Harkes but expect the usual suspects to start, time to start putting some points on the board.

Think most Arabs have been expecting Fox to get the gig for a while now and it will be widely meet with a meh response. Most were unhappy with Courts then we went on to have a decent season, most were happy with Ross which turned into a disaster for whatever reason, if Fox can get the players to put in the effort whilst on the pitch then that’s at least a start and the very least we should be expecting. Any manager should be saying to Asghar I’ll take the job on the understanding that we can look at the free agent market for a defensive midfielder and whilst looking check what keepers are available.

Now that Ferguson has ruled himself out (not sure he was ever a serious option) the rumoured names left in the running are Fox (clear favourite), Barry Robson, Kevin Thomson, Austin McPhee and Jon Daly. Can’t say I have a real preference from that list but Thomson would be bottom of the list for me. It’s a gamble whoever we appoint, can only hope the players show a bit more professionalism and there’s a better chemistry than there was with Ross (whatever the reason was, doubt we’ll ever know). One day we will see the Daly/Dillon dream team but I don’t think it’s this time.

I don’t think it will matter who we bring in as manager if we don’t add some aggression to that midfield. Absolutely powder puff and we are on the verge of turn our Welsh international star asset midfielder into a Colchester Utd free transfer target by asking him to play the sitting role. A lot of hate towards Asghar just now when a couple of weeks ago he was being praised for the quality of signings we made and bringing Jack Ross to the club and while I believe he is the man who has the biggest say in transfers (despite claims the manager has the final say), Ross did state he didn’t want a defensive midfielder and indeed when things went wrong for him at Hibs it was the same thing there (Doyle-Hayes and Newell in midfield). In no way am I trying to stick up for Asghar but I think a lot more blame should be put on the players who have clearly underperformed and some who look like they simply can’t be arsed (T Watt). Hopefully whoever gets the gig will be allowed to see if there is any free agents out there who would help bring a bit of dig and a better balance to our midfield.

When we signed him most fans were happy that we had finally signed a natural number 10, the big problem is Ross seems to be unwilling to play him there (left of a midfield 3 yesterday and right of a front 3 against AZ) so it’s difficult to criticise the player until he gets a run of games in his natural position.

Keeper Freeman Edwards Mulgrew Behich Meekison Sibbald Cudjoe McGrath Watt/Middleton Fletcher Freeman in for Smith as a better attacking option, picked up 5 or 6 assists during his run in the team early last season, Meekison in for Harkes (Levitt out for a few weeks) as Harkes does a lot of running without contributing very much and tough call between Watt and Middleton, Watt played well despite the lack of goals last season but has disappointed the last couple of games. What I would like to see (unless we miraculously bring in a decent defensive midfielder before then) but fully expect Smith and Harkes to start. Very early in the season but this already feels like an important game after 2 very timid performances.

How many times does our play break down when Harkes touches the ball, fucking baffles me how he’s seemingly undroppable.
