  1. Just searched and you are correct. If it turns out she sounds that way as an aftereffect of a triumphant victory over a long smack issue then I of course apologise humbly. But in lieu of finding that out she makes me want to cut out my eardrums with that appalling drawl.
  2. What's the name of the lady that sometimes is on Radio Scotland as a talking head doing reviews of the news, movies, events, etc. and who sounds like she's permanently drunk? I appreciate not much to go on, but hopefully someone will know who I mean.
  3. Really impressed at the response on here and from the police, amazing stuff. Would also like to echo the best wishes not just to Hoose Rice but anyone else going through tough times. Hopefully one good thing from this will be that others using the forum can see that there's help out there and other people who understand what they are going through and who genuinely want to help. I've found reading this thread to be incredibly moving.
  4. Mine is constantly talking about how lean her company is and how they have too much work. But whenever any of them runs into an issue I notice that about 5 repetitive video calls are needed to discuss and move on. I also note that none of them ever work any extra hours. I'm not advocating it, and businesses should employ the number of staff they need, but when I have extra work to do I just do it so I don't have to worry about it. If that means doing stuff after hours sometimes so be it.
  5. Having read this I went and watched it last night. Unfortunately I've come to the conclusion that no-one is in the right and that overall it's just even more boring than I expected. Immediate thoughts were: a lot of the jokes were obvious and not particularly funny. Also I could see why he was being accused of being unnecessarily cruel. Then on the other hand, some of the jokes were alright and did challenge the fact that we often rely on overly simplistic and trite mores. I do see the point about punching down, but there's a line in there where he says he'll treat everyone equally and that's why he has no issue including trans folk in his jokes. He's obviously getting his excuses in, but there's also a grain of truth in it. Then on the other hand, this speaks less to our position on trans rights and more to our overall and societal hypocrisies, prejudices, etc. It's like the old complaint about comedians finding humour in slagging off Christians, and not doing the same for Muslims. And at the moment it does seem to me that the likes of Gervais are happy to say things about the trans community that they would no longer say about gay people or black people and so on and so forth. And then in 5 years maybe no-one mainstream will be making trans jokes, but we'll be looking at something else being exposed as unacceptable. And that's fine. Society is fluid, and we should try to develop and not hurt others. Then again, just to continue flip-flopping... I do sometimes get fed up with the Be Kind mantra. I was witness to a really tiresome exchange recently. Being a geeky comics fan I follow a lot of creators and fans on twitter etc. Comics, as some of you will know, have often very annoying fans. Gatekeeping keyboard warriors who are constantly scolding "newbs" about their perceived lack of right to be part of a group they've invested less time and money in. And on the flipside you have, sometimes performatively, good guys who are always desperate to show how welcoming and kind they are. So anyway, the exchange was this: 1) Smalltime comic creator gets his work included in a collection. Posts proudly and happily about it. 2) Fan congratulates him but mentions that he wished another comic had also been included in the collection published. 3) Smalltime comic creator considers that comment to p***k his ego, and says "don't you realise this is a great thing for me? Please don't take away the happiness of the moment", or words to that effect. 4) Fan replies apologising but also mentioning that being admonished by smalltime comic creator has triggered his anxiety and he's now feeling publicly shamed. And, of course, this all had a bunch of people adding their opinions on both sides. It was a riddy and a half. Everyone being pointlessly offended by everyone else. On the one hand I want to try to be the sort of person that puts empathy first. On the other hand I sometimes want to tell folk to STFU. This word salad was brought to you by me having nothing to do.
  6. You do realise my post was mainly about Bellshill? I couldn't care less about Paisley and certainly can't be arsed arguing about it. Ah, fair enough. But... ...what he said. It's really only big motorway junctions that separate Bellshill from Coatbridge and Uddingston from Tannochside and Then Broomhouse. Even East Kilbride seems to now only have a tiny bit of countryside between it and Blantyre/Hamilton, and I'm sure that wasn't the case when I were a lad. I don't really care for so much sprawl on greenfield sites. Loads of the building in the last 50 years could have involved cleaning up brownfield. There's still plenty of that.
  7. I used to know folk in Gartmore when I was a kid. We would play in the grounds of that big house that had some cult living in it at the time. Nice wee place iirc
  8. Bearsden yes, Paisley maybe but I wouldn't see Bellshill as part of Greater Glasgow. Properly in deepest Lanarkshire with non-built up areas in between. Exactly what non-built-up areas between Glasgow and Paisley? There's a few fields beside the motorway and railway line, and a couple of golf courses, but otherwise it's city sprawl as far as I can see.
  9. Aberfoyle? I went to the butcher there recently. Got some nice beef. True story.
  10. Good. I wish they'd do that here. Every time someone tells me they're getting astroturf put in I have to try hard not to show my disgust.
  11. Another 8 "cities" is a joke. Most of these aren't just towns; they're shit towns. I wouldn't stop in these places to take a dump in the gutter of the road. Ridiculous list.
  12. I ducked that particular shitstorm, I admit. I find most of U2's 90s output more irritating than Oasis though. But I never liked those fuds. Looking back though, I can't believe there was hype about Roll With It vs Country House. 2 of the worst songs you're likely to hear still played today.
  13. John Alford's face annoyed me any time I saw a trailer for London's Burning. Annoyed me to the point of visceral hatred. So this tale has given me a newfound respect and admiration for Kemp.
  14. Used to love the letters they would mischievously print in the NME from folk (uniformly 19 year old men) explicitly saying "I liked them before they were popular". Does NME and Melody Maker still exist? Last time I saw an NME it was on glossy paper. I was disgusted.
  15. I don't know enough about The Boo Radleys to be fair. And I appreciate that I shouldn't judge them simply on the stuff that troubled the charts, simply because I am ill-informed about their catalogue as a whole... But: the stuff that did trouble the charts annoyed me. They're like Lush to me. They had a back-catalogue coming out of shoegaze that seemed well-thought of. But the chart nonsense was total rubbish and I've never bothered investigating the older stuff. Richard Ashcroft is a total fud though. A laughable man, like that goon from Spiritualized. Nah, cannot hack the Manics. Tried to like them cos of their politics. Found them annoying. And Nicky Wire is a weird wee goblin.
  16. I like to think that my disdain for the above improved hole-getting. I could be wrong, admittedly. Didn't you move to the other side of the world in a quest for hole-getting?
  17. Semisonic and Republica sucked too. Reef were the actual worst, now that I think about it. Although I guess not typically Britpop. But definitely the worst band to have existed.
  18. I think this makes me the moron, but until now I didn't know those were bucket hats. I always called them fishing caps. But people who wear them are generally imbeciles, I can get on board with that. 12 in 1989 and I loved school and uni in the madchester to britpop years, but even so I remember the painful realisation that an awful lot of it was utter shite. I remember guys stoating around in those stupid hats and claiming that shit like Ocean Colour Scene and the Seahorses were good, and being offended at resultant ridicule. Mansun Dodgy Kula Shaker Embrace Heavy Stereo Boo Radleys Manic Street Preachers Ocean Colour Scene Northern Uproar Shed Seven Powder Bluetones Catatonia Seahorses The Verve Stereophonics Echobelly All crap. There will be others that annoy me. I'll have a think. What really offends me is when I turn on Absolute 90s and they're playing the likes of Kula Shaker. And I remember the sort of losers in my corridor of halls of residence who liked that shit, and although it was bad enough at the time I guess somewhat forgivable because folk were young, and the scene seemed exciting. But to be playing it 25 years later isn't acceptable.
  19. It's not an either/or though. You're spot-on about the training, and it ties neatly in with Dave's point about useless management, but equally if people are at a loose end, then having a culture of good housekeeping is no bad thing. The company I work for is involved in manufacturing and repair of pumps, motors, etc. Although the workshops can look old-fashioned in some areas, they have to be kept as tidy as practicable. The stuff we work on ends up in nuclear power station, oil platforms, submarines, etc. There has to be a culture of quality first, and poor housekeeping and a lack of tidiness is always a red flag. You can almost guarantee that the same people that have a pile of mess in their workstation are also the ones who aren't paying as much attention to safety or quality. We train and train and train and try hard to ensure progression paths are there and achievable, and I'll still get dismayed by going into the workshop to find idiots standing around picking their arses. With regards to this topic, and pretty much anything: The boring reality is that carrots, sticks, education, opportunity, and a litany of other often contradicting tactics will work for some and not for others. There's no point in saying "this doesn't work - we should do that". There's no catch-all. I would, however, prefer it if they didn't backtrack on plans to tax crap food. It's cynical as hell to pretend the decision was about helping the poor, as there are loads of ways to ringfence the money and help people.
  20. If someone has just stretched a 2-hour task out to an 8-hour shift they shouldn't be very tired tbh. I think if I was their boss I'd be a bit pissed off.
