Thought Boyce put in a shift today to be fair ...... not many others though.  Henderson looked a bit lively when he came on.

Boyce was our only performer till Henderson came on.  Gnanduillet got better with service.

The back 4/5 and midfield though...

Craig Gordon. There outfield squad is average but he pulls off wonder saves every game. Plus Neilson is a known joke of a manager.

Like United with Shankland last season, they had one player who was too good to be there and he dragged them through games.

I think you're overegging how valuable he's been a bit, but I doubt we'd have lost today if he'd played.

However him, Boyce or Walker have certainly made the difference for us in far too many games.

In our last 5 competitive matches, none of them against top sides, we've drawn 3 and lost 2.

If that's what comes from a perfect storm of favourable circumstances aligning, I don't want to think about what our record will be when the Gods are displeased.

First off, that's not correct, it's 1 win, 2 draws and 2 defeats.  One of the 'draws' of course being the best result we've had in decades.

And the performance level even in the defeats is absolutely miles ahead of where we were when Clarke came in.  Performances need to be backed up with more wins, but playing consistently strongly will always improve your chances in that respect

Sunday is a real test of our progression in tactics, ability and mindset. Appreciate we got to Euros which has brought a feel good factor but let's be honest we fell over the line through a back door.
If we really have progressed it's imperative that we deliver a professional performance against Israel just like the Danes did. If we limp to a draw or worse still a loss, then I'm not too sure Clarke has taken this team forward.

Deservedly knocking out Serbia, a team who comfortably pumped Norway, isn't 'falling in the back door'.

He took over an absolute shambles and has clearly made us a) far harder to beat and b) mentally far more resilient.

We've not been great against Israel, though we 100% should have won the last game over there bar some awful finishing and decision making.

Sunday will tell us if we've stepped on again, or if there's still a level we're stuck at but saying we haven't moved forward if we draw or lose there is surely wrong

  5. I think a lot of people mistake unspectacular for being average.

Denmark are a very well drilled, exceedingly efficient team.  They lose very few goals and hardly ever lose

The fact they aren't great to watch doesn't count for that much in terms of how difficult they will be to beat.

  6. If we want to 'blame' anyone for the second goal, Tierney giving the ball away under no pressure directly led to it.  He had a very good game but was certainly more at fault than Hendry for that.

Also, no sure what people expect from Andy Robertson.  Second half he was outstanding getting up the wing in support and put in a couple of great balls as well as winning the corner for the equaliser.

  7. I thought we played pretty well all in.  We lost 2 avoidable goals but none of the defence played badly.

McGinn is much better further forward for us and Dykes wasn't great but Christie and Armstrong looked lively and McTominay is too good to play in defence.

Should really have won, but if we get a win in Israel it will have been a good start

Correct - McCormack was sacked on February 9th 1998, when Dundee were five points clear of Raith. They also sacked Jocky Scott while top on March 2010. Another example that comes to mind is Ross County sacking Dick Campbell while top of the then Second Division.

I'm not sure how pertinent any of these examples are to Hearts as in both Dundee cases it was in response to a downturn in form that put the title in doubt and trying to arrest the slide - worked with sacking McCormack and replacing him with Scott, didn't with Scott and replacing him with Gordon Chisholm () - while with County and Campbell it was only October and I think there was a realisation that early that he wasn't going to be a long term option, which wasn't entirely based on results.or performances.

In Hearts' case the league is obviously being won at a canter regardless but any concerns are entirely around results and performances, especially having just overseen the worst result in the club's history. If Neilson is going to be sacked then now is the time to do it when the league is already won and even Cathro would get Hearts over the line from this position.

I guess the question is, while there's no risk to being promoted this season, based on Neilson's previous spell in the top flight you should have every confidence of comfortably getting back into the top six. He does still need a bigger rebuild than the last time and obviously he's not doing much to inspire confidence in this spell so maybe he won't perform as well, but given this board's track record is the risk of appointing another dud who contrives to put you in another relegation battle worth the potential rewards of a manager who is less predictable and frustrating?

Generally I hate the 'but who would you appoint' argument against sacking managers as they should be judged on their own merits, but given that Neilson is the only Hearts manager to finish in the top four in the last 9 years does that mean he still has some merit?

I would say all good pertinent points.  I'd actually have every confidence that we'd be comfortably top 6 with Neilson in charge next season, despite his limitations, because dull, risk averse football works perfectly up there.

The overriding problem though is he's lost the fans completely, and a competent 4th place finish for a fan base where a large portion think challenging for the league is just a question of having the confidence to attack at Celtic Park is never going to be enough. And there's zero chance of him wildly exceeding expectations.

And truth be told, getting hounded off a non-league team is a sacking offence on it's own

Greatest shock in Scottish Cup history? Under the circumstances (no competitive matches for Brora for weeks), probably, but Fraserburgh v Dundee would run it close. "Fraserburgh's most famous victory was in the Scottish Cup on 31 January 1959, where they defeated Dundee, one of the top clubs in Scotland at the time, 1–0 at Bellslea Park. This is widely regarded as the biggest ever 'giant killing' shock in the Scottish Cup."

Elgin City were 2 minutes from beating Celtic in 1959/60

The Dundee one would probably be worse, on the grounds that they were a good team and their fans would actually have been surprised.

  11. Dunno.  Missing Smith, Boyce and Gordon for sure, probably Kingsley as well, which is going to mean our back 4 is even worse than normal with a worse keeper behind them and our main goal threat is out, which on top of how we played Saturday doesn't inspire much confidence.

On the plus side, Halliday is likely going to have to play full back so the midfield might move quicker than a 3 legged sloth.

While I think Robbie should just shut his mouth and admit we were pish, I don't think he's saying anything anyone watching wouldn't have thought themselves.  The surface was awful and every pass was a lottery

    Thats just not true

It clearly is true though.  Every ten yard pass took about 15 bounces.  As an example, Bobby Linn had a nice bit of skill then went to play a Crossfield pass as the ball took a bobble and flew 25 yards out of play.

Hearts were, yet again,  shite.  I'm not blaming the pitch for that, because a better team takes that into account and gets players turning and doesn't try to play the way we did.  Doesn't mean the pitch wasn't poor.

Having spoken to a neighbour who is a Hearts fan he stated that Arbroath's second half streaming is every bit as good as the Hearts and obviously the gremlins being encountered in the first half was out with our control.

If it was outwith Arbroath's control, it was a genuinely happy set of circumstances that led to the second half changes they never made leading to a massive improvement.
