Something different - the last two referees have been picky about where throw ins are taken, is this a new focus this season?

We talked about this during the game on Saturday, seems too much of a coincidence for it not to be something deliberate. I've not heard it mentioned at all but you wonder if the refs tell them before the game or if the clubs were told before the season.

  2. If Wilkinson plays tomorrow night, and I expect him to, he really needs to show a bit more presence. Saturday wasn't the first time that he failed to move towards a ball coming into the box just because a defender was standing slightly in front of him. He really needs to be putting in more of an effort to get by players rather than meekly standing by. Other than that, I think he shows more link-up play and passing ability than Bair or Shaw but that wouldn't be particularly difficult.

The new barriers were designed to provide a '1-in-200-years standard of defence', not stop flooding altogether (or prevent flooding for the next 200 years, as somebody's bound to interpret that as).

I think it's fair to to say that a >200mm in a single night dump of rain is indeed one of those 1-in-200 events, not a case of somebody doing their sums wrong.  As Mackie points out, levels on par with the current freak event haven't been seen for at least 50 years, and probably the 50 years before that.

I think I heard them saying on the TV that the flood defences were designed  for a river height of 3.8m but it got up to 5.1m. Either that was considerably greater than a 1 in 200 year event or the statistics used to determine the volume of rainfall were well off.

Drainage to new developments has to be designed for the worst rainfall event in 200 years (100 years in England). Technically, this could happen this year, next year or at any time in the next 200 years. There's also an additional climate change allowance which has  been increasing over the years and varies depending on the requirements of each council area. It used to be 15 or 20% but 30 or 40% is more common nowadays. I believe SEPA requires 35% in the east and 55% in the west for projects under their jurisdiction, which this presumably would have been.

Obviously floor prevention is different but new development only needs to be designed to cope with a 1 in 30 year storm without flooding. For worse storms it is permissible to have flooding within surrounding areas as long as the water doesn't enter buildings, stop escape routes or flow off the site. It's all very theoretical though and highly dependent on maintenance so drains being blocked by leaves doesn't help.

TLDR - it was a hell of a lot of rain that was always going to cause flooding.

I know folk have obviously stayed when they shouldn't have but the number of abandoned cars in these pictures and videos is mental. Are they just intentionally leaving cars out in the hope insurance buys them a new one?

Are most of them not just parked outside their own homes? Has there been advice that people should move their cars to higher streets? I think it's just one of those things in these circumstances.

Time for the great Scottish public to show how stupid they are again as they interpret 'stay indoors and do not travel unless absolutely necessary' as 'pop down to Tesco for a packet of fags and a pint of milk'

They said we shouldn't travel unless absolutely necessary a few weeks ago and I still went to Livingston to see Motherwell. They were right - it was absolutely unnecessary.

  6. Just before half time I was thinking I'd seen this sort of match plenty of times before at Livingston. Pretty untidy with hardly any chances and it looked like one goal might settle it. The sending off changed that and we were well beaten. Could have done better at the goals but it could have been more. I was impressed by Mackay on the right wing, you don't see many players taking on people like that and it resulted in Spencer (then Gent) having a torrid time.

Can’t remember if it was Motherwell we did that to last season, but from then we sorted it out. Pies for all.

With the class pies and free hot drinks, you’d think Motherwell would leave us with the three points as a thanks

The folk that supply your pies have been providing us with some of these pies as well recently and someone involved has been posting on our thread. He posted saying he thought the pies were only going to be available in the home end but I'm pleased to say he was wrong. Fair play to Livingston for the free hot drinks and also to the stewards for opening up another section to allow folk down the front to move to avoid the rain. Plenty of clubs wouldn't have done that (I'm looking at you Hibs and Hearts).
