Dumbarton vs Elgin City
Briggsy's Ghost replied to FifeSons's topic in Scottish League 2 General Chatter
Hell of a result for us and completely unexpected. I’m sure Dumbarton fans are livid with a poor performance but we’ve had so many poor results against teams that have barely turned up it is nice to get 3 points for once. Results at the bottom went our way too (yes we are looking nervously at the bottom of the table) so a pint on Saturday night tastes a wee bit better for the the first time in a while! -
Elgin City v Stranraer
Briggsy's Ghost replied to elginer's topic in Scottish League 2 General Chatter
That was abysmal! Given the dross that has been served up at home this season it is actually quite impressive to hit a standard so low that it stands out as the poorest performance. Stranraer deserved the points but any team able to field 11 people who can run and have watched a couple of games of football would probably have taken the points today. To watch so many players have an inability to pass the ball, stop the ball and have zero idea what to do with the ball if it miraculously stayed at their feet is completely unacceptable. I dislike the shouts of abuse and booing from our fans but I can understand it today because that was pathetic! Safe journey back to the Stranraer fans who made the long journey up! -
This probably doesn’t deserve a match thread given how bad it was. Conditions were awful and the pitch is really suffering but the football was pretty poor all round IMO. I thought Rovers were the better team, especially first half but probably didn’t do enough to put the game out so sight. Highlight of the game was without doubt the superb strike for Rover’s goal - one that you just have to applaud even as a home fan! Second half Elgin faired a little better and managed to salvage a point from the penalty spot. Not entirely sure it was a penalty - something there definitely but one a home team gets more often than the away team. Any point at the moment is great fully received so it feels like a point gained rather than 2 points lost.

Elgin City 2021-22

Great result! Last week was awful but after a performance like that you hope for a reaction - seems to have happened! We are so unpredictable as to how we will perform each week but we are 3rd in the league. That is far higher up than I expected us to be! Hope we can get a few results on the bounce and stay in the top half of the league! -

Not biased against us!!!! Did you miss that bit.? It means that I don’t think the referee was biased against Elgin! He was was still rubbish though - as is the case most weeks now! How low do we have to set the bar on here!? -

Oh and the standard of refereeing in this league is getting beyond a joke! Not biased against us - just depressingly crap! -

Better team won. Score line maybe flatters a little but not the result! We just look really short of an attacking threat at home! Should have taken the lead but after that we didn’t create to much. Thought we probably should have had penalty but it was not for the Draper incident. Blatant dive - although not quite as bad as Sons no. 11 in the second half (he made a miraculous recovery after not getting the foul!). Really poor defending for 3 of the goals but an excellent strike for the 3rd goal! Just a really poor performance all round from us and we got what we deserved from the game! Good vocal away support so fair play to those that travelled up! -
Elgin City v Forfar Athletic 15/10/2022
Briggsy's Ghost replied to gordon9736's topic in Scottish League 2 General Chatter
A quite dreadful game. Two poor teams and an even worse ref made for eye bleeding stuff. Not sure you could say either team deserved to win but Forfar weren’t quite as bad Elgin so can’t begrudge them the points. It a glass is half empty weekend as despite a very decent run of results I feel we are very much in looking over our shoulder territory again. -
Stranraer v Elgin
Briggsy's Ghost replied to Thom & Gerry's topic in Scottish League 2 General Chatter
I think this summarises things pretty well. It is another very pleasing result and getting pegged back but taking the lead again shows that the ghosts of thrown away points are not playing on the team’s minds. Still definitely feels like a step away from the bottom rather than a move towards the playoff places but if we can get a win on Tuesday we can maybe start paying a bit more attention to the teams above! -
Elgin City v Annan Athletic 01/10/22
Briggsy's Ghost replied to gordon9736's topic in Scottish League 2 General Chatter
Well that was enjoyable if a little unexpected. Really solid team performance capped off by a real cutting edge up front. Hester terrified the Annan defence and ran them ragged and Lawrence had easily his best game that I have seen. The defensive effort was equally impressive for me. High balls into the box have been the undoing of many an Elgin performance for years but there was an Elgin head on almost every one today. Credit to the management team! We look capable of being competitive against any team in this league - that looked like a pipe dream at the beginning of the season! -
Stenhousemuir v Elgin City

In isolation this should be seen as a good point away from home. However, yet again we can not hold on to a lead and it is becoming a real problem. We’ve taken the lead in so many games this season already only to be pegged back and it makes a huge difference to the league table. Had we held on a couple of times we would probably be 2nd and looking up - we are not and are still looking over our shoulder! -
Elgin City v Bonnyrigg Rose
Briggsy's Ghost replied to gordon9736's topic in Scottish League 2 General Chatter
I thought we deserved the points! I think the pessimism in the fans given our ability to throw away leads etc.. gives a slightly screwed version of what is actually happening (I’m no different btw)! We simply expect the opposition to score when the pressure is put on but realistically I think we had more clear cut opportunities to score than Bonnyrigg. Just tests the old ticker a bit more than it should!! -

Probably wanted an outlet for the defence to pass to and keep the ball instead of just punting it up the pitch? Always seems strange to drop soapy deeper but we won and didn’t concede so hard to argue too much. -

Much needed result and well deserved over the 90 mins I thought! Not a classic but everyone put in a decent performance, worked hard and we actually managed to hold on to a lead!! Thought MOTM could have gone to a few players today but it was between Draper and Soapy for me. -
Elgin City v Stranraer
Briggsy's Ghost replied to elginer's topic in Scottish League 2 General Chatter
Classic game of two halves. Elgin pretty decent first half and dominated most of it. Could easily have had a goal or 2 more before half time. Second half was almost the complete reverse with Stranraer looking dangerous every time they got the ball forward. Losing a lead again, hitting the post a couple of times and having one cleared off the line make it pretty disappointing but a draw was probably the fair result. Need a win from somewhere - worrying times already. -
The ball and his hand are not in the area in my opinion - it could have been a red for deliberate handball. On the disallowed goal if you watch the linesman he doesn’t flag straight away, he puts the flag up when the player he deems to be offside when the free kick is taken heads the ball.
-
Definite handball but it is definitely outside the area. Yellow/red card but no penalty. Disallowed goal - pause the screen at the moment the free kick is taken, the guy who scores looks to be the furthest forward and I’d say he’s offside.

Stirling Albion v Elgin City - 06/08/22
Briggsy's Ghost replied to BB_Bino's topic in Scottish League 2 General Chatter
Probably a decent point away from home but always disappointing not to win when 0-2 up. Anything remotely positive after last week is welcome so 2 goals and showing a bit of fight is not the disaster that it feels after getting pegged back. -
Elgin v East Fife
Briggsy's Ghost replied to Briggsy's Ghost's topic in Scottish League 2 General Chatter
Gave it a couple of hours so as not to give an over the top knee jerk reaction - we are finishing bottom of this league! It is going to take some miraculous loans/signings to transform that squad into something competitive. The first 45 mins today was one of the most depressing halves of football I can remember-an absolute shambles of a performance. Hard to tell if East Fife are decent or not because we didn’t give them a game until we were 0-3 down. Congrats to East Fife on a well deserved win - we have a lot of improvements to find! -
First game of the season and no match thread gives an indication of the optimism for the coming season. East Fife fans seem equally apathetic about their team so it could be a good indication of who is going to really struggle. Got to start the season with a degree of hope so I’ll go 2-1 with a Hester brace.

Where is this in the ground? Struggling to think where it is. -
That is a very unexpected but well deserved 3 points. The difference in the team from before Xmas is night and day. I think a lot of us had the fear looking at bottom spot but this squad has turned it around dramatically. Credit to Gavin and his team as tonight against a team walking the league they were excellent. I’m a pessimist but after that result I am looking up and wondering about the playoffs.
-
Huge 3 points for Elgin. Not a great game at all and neither team looked that good. The misplaced passes today were ridiculous but whilst not really playing well the team are putting in a real shift and they’ve ground out 7 points from the last 3 games which may well prove vital! There is a real lack of quality in this league this year for some reason so a few decent results could have us looking up rather than down. We’re much closer to the playoff positions than to last place which seems remarkable given our performances but I really do believe this is a decent squad - we just need to build on these results and hopefully with the pressure lifted a little we will see the best of the players. Forfar did not deserve to lose but there really isn’t any better tonic than a last minute winner - improves my evening but probably not tomorrow morning!!

The Binos v Elgin City
Briggsy's Ghost replied to rhliston's topic in Scottish League 2 General Chatter
That’s a huge and rather unexpected 3 points given our form. Hopefully 4 points in the last 2 games can inspire a prolonged run of better performances. I really think this squad is better than they are currently showing but points are really the only thing that matters when you find yourself in the bottom 2! That’s a quite amazing and disturbing run of form for Stirling. Can’t see it being terminal given their squad but it’s got to be very disappointing to now be looking over the shoulder!
